During some work on our family tree an address on there has turned up but I cant find it on the old maps I have. retep 29-12-2005, 04:15 PM Smilter Lane--now Herries Road-- this address comes up regular, usually for deaths its the Hospital or workhouse hospital as it was. elenac 29-12-2005, 06:40 PM Thats brilliant thanks, does the building still exist or is it long gone? hutch 29-12-2005, 08:24 PM An old map of 1855 shows that a Goddard Hall was on the site of the the hospital along side Smilter Lane, a Phiillip Smilter lived there who was the last man in Sheffield to travel in a sedan chair [he only had one leg.]:) retep 29-12-2005, 09:32 PM Thats brilliant thanks, does the building still exist or is it long gone? Its now the Northern General Hospital although I think some of the old workhouse buildings still exist, perhaps some one on here will tell you i'm sure. elenac 29-12-2005, 09:50 PM Looked up the worhouse on internet, quite a lot of the buildings still survive, looking at the photo's basically all the old parts of the hospital. Alson included some maps which show goddard house and smilter lane. Many thanks for the help it has cleared up quite a lot for us. It was a death certificate I am researching and the writing is very poor. PaulTansley 30-12-2005, 12:40 PM Herries Road used to be Piper Lane, Smilter was close to it but not pre Herries Rd. So your looking for a death certificate, can you do that on the net. There is a snicket Rd off Herries Rd that goes into the hospital ground above the traffic lights and below the Herrries Rd enterance, was that Smilter. retep 30-12-2005, 01:08 PM Smilter Lane was a continuation of Piper lane ending at what is now the bottom of Herries at the junction of Barnsley road near cannon hall. elenac 30-12-2005, 08:40 PM You can get most records via the net these days. If you use 1837 online to trace the person and type of record ie birth, they have a link to the records office, you supply the details and pay £7 they do the rest. PopT 30-12-2005, 09:46 PM I was confused about the whereabouts of 2 Smilter Lane the address where my Great Grandfather died in 1921. As others have pointed out Smilter Lane became part of Herries Road. Number 2 Smilter Lane was the Sheffield Union Workhouse. Unfortunately I have searched for records of the persons in there over the years but the records are missing. There is a book about the workhouse and a copy can be seen at the Archives but doesn't name any of the peope who lived there. I haven't had the opportunity to look but they could be listed on the Electoral Registers kept in the Local History Library in the Central Library. I hope this info helps. Please let us know how you get on, you may be able to pass some useful tips onto the likes of me. Happy Hunting glynn 31-12-2005, 01:53 AM Yes the old workhouse at the northern general does still exsist. In the basement you can still see what is left of the old cells. elenac 31-12-2005, 03:04 PM PopT's reply sorted my final question. The death cert we have is for her gt grandmother who died in 1920, the address shown is 2 Smilter Lane. elenac 31-12-2005, 03:09 PM Finding the details we wanted was relatively (excuse pun) easy as the person we were looking for wasn't in the workhouse but lived in the city centre. She went into the workhouse hospital when she was taken ill with pneumonia, unfortunately they were unable to help her and she died aged 39. You are viewing an archive.
