Hi, i have just recently bought an external CD/DVD writer, it seems to be burning music cd's fine , but when i have tried DVD's it is saying that there is not enough space on the blank dvd. But the blank disc is 4.7 gb and the movie i am trying to copy is only 700mb, So what could it be, do i have to change any settings or anything?

Hiya,

i've had a fun filled christmas also installing two of these LG dvd multi writers, and I finally cracked it last night.

Firstly, if you used to use Nero or another programme to burn Cd's, it will have disabled your ASPI files, which tell your pc what your drive is (to use laymens terms, which im best at :) )

Go to : Start:
Run:
Type: Regedit

click ok

go to:

My Computer > Hkey_Local_Machine > System > Current Control Set > Services > You should find a folder called ASPI32, or not, if Nero has removed it.

Anyhow, it will either need activating or updating.....go here (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm) and download and install the updated ASPI files, you should notice when you've rebooted your PC has seen your drive as a DVDram drive.

Then i'd install the Nero 7 Demo, or buy the full version, I have and it's great, but be careful of the Nero Scout bit at the beginning, it tends to take over your pc if you allow it to go routing through all your media files.

when you try burning , have a look, theres an option to tick/untick for creating an image

also theres an option (on by default) for cacheing of smaller files, try that unticked?

sounds like you need a second hard drive, then you can get it to create the image etc on the new drive (plenty of space)

I think your right, because this is the message im getting......

'sorry there is not enough disk space for the required nero cache (required 916 MB available 143 MB) please free some disk space or use another caching drive.'

so is there any other way other than deleting files to free up space on my hard drive? And where is the option for creating an image or not?

Im guessing the movie youre trying to burn is in .avi form, and youre trying to burn it in a format readable by most standalone DVD players, in which case a 700mb .avi, when converted to DVD, will take up a fair bit more than 4.7gb. Ypull probably need to split it first, and make sure theres room on your h/d to fit it temporarily while it converts it.

errrrrrm

your doing cd copy?

theres an image tab.........where you can tell it where to create the image? but if youve only got 1 drive / partition thats no good.

i believe you want to select "on the fly" ie:- play on one drive while recording on the other
unless you only have 1 drive then im afraid it needs to create an image before it can copy

Just a small warning here, be VERY careful if you do anything in your registry settings, if you mess up teh registry Windows will cease to work at all till you or someone else puts it right, which is painful even for an IT expert.
