The good old BBC provide a reasonable service - www.bbc.co.uk/travelnews.
If you consider going on the train instead check www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Good luck!!
I've been working in Liverpool, Preston, Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and Warrington for the past month and have travelled over the Pennines almost daily. The best route I've found so far is to go up the M1 To Junc 38, head through Huddersfield, and pick up the M62 on the other side of it. Avoids that horrendous bottleneck that you get where the Snake and Woodhead Pass meet up just before the M57, and also cuts out the M1/M62 junction which seems to be permanently snarled up. Of course, you'll still get stuck around the M60, snow or not!!
