This is a big one and has been puzzling me for a while now... do the majority of people buy clothes, household items, electrical appliances because they are functional or fashionalble ......In other words is this a status thing....look at my ikea furniture you only have a dfs cheapo one,,, or do people not care about this kind of stuff is it just practical and functional to buy these items and visit these places......
for example do people go out to expensive bars because they really think the drinks are nicer, atmosphere better, more pleasent etc or is is because they want to be more 'cool' and have a bigger status - or is it a combination of factors influencing the choice of where people go which is more complicated than fashion, status and functionality.

I am really interested what people think about this in Sheffield not just about themselves.....xxxr

I think that people usually buy stuff because they need them (eg: a new pair of jeans for going out in, a new car etc), but they will go for the best quality, prestigious brand that their budget will allow. I don't think many people go to certain bars just to look cool, more likely, theygo there because that's where their mates go. The higher drinks prices are incidental.

Having said that, I've noticed a lot of snobbery in recent years, with people looking down on others because of their choice of going to less prestigious venues, wearing cheaper clothes, etc. Has Sheffield always been like this?

I buy what I like, go where I like - couldn't care less what anyone else thinks.
