I don't think they are. They were covered up the other day, I thought they were only up for the road works??

so did i, but driving home, they appear to have perma-painted the speed lines on. camera still bagged mind.

cant we just get someone from flashlane to run down and keep bagging it?

:) cheers everyone im not from yorkshire so i dont know what they were up for drove up it on christmasday no signs stating cameras in operation so didnt see the lines on the road in time so hopefully im ok cheers again

don't worry - when i drove back from doncaster yesterday the cameras were still 'bagged up', so you shouldn't have been caught.

I heard they were still calibrated for 50mph even when roadworks were removed last week. Though I dont belive they are currently intentionally in use.

Though Im not sure if those roadworks are starting up again after xmas?

Signs up last week (or the week before, can't remember when exactly) said that the roadworks were to be continued until March '06 so presume they've only gone on holiday for Xmas :(

Maybe the reason they've been re-bagged is because they're still set at 50mph ready for the reduced limit to return in the new year?

Anyone know whether they'll stay after the works are completed? Seems a bit daft to fit Gatso's for 3 months of roadworks.... and if they have, why on that stretch and not on the M1 Tinsley Viaduct works where the limit has been reduced to 50 for what feels like years!!

:cool: ive found out from the highways agency that they are not in use they were still active for awhile by accident but they said if anybody gets caught ie flashed they wont be prosecuted that is why they have baged them and as far as the road works are concerned the road works looks complete

Sorry but you are talking rubbish. Speed is directly responsible for about a third of the deaths on the roads - i.e. about 1,000 lives a year in the UK. In the remainder of cases speed is a major factor in the severity of injuries. Go and talk to a paramedic before you open your big trap further on this subject.

speed is rated as a major contributor in very very few accidents and as contributory in <10%.

Speed doesn't kill, no one ever died because they went faster than 70 mph. Crashing kills you (or rather sharp bits of car making holes in you and massive acceleration to soft bits of you). Crashing is caused generally (on the motorway) by innapropriate breaking gaps, driver inattention and lack of lane discipline.
If speed killed then our motorways would not be the safest roads/mile in the country, but they are.

Camaras are still bagged but as above the highways agency will not be collecting anythign or taking any action for anyone caught after the roadworks were finished.

Wonder how many people have just paid automatically without realising it.

I went to work this morning and back this evening on M18 no camera's working but lines still in place because I dont think the road works have finished yet only taken down for holiday period.

didn't look bagged when I came home tonight. Also there isn't a temp speed limit??

Roadworks are planned to go back on there today, so 50mph speed limit and cameras will be active again pretty soon I'm afraid...

Of course if there were only only car on the road then it could go as fast as it liked, but as it happens there are millions. All of those factors you raise take place in the context of the speed of the vehicle. Rather than ask whether the speed cameras are working on the M18 today, a better question would be "how many idiots are going to be speeding through the road works on the M18 today?" Where there are road works and temporary speed restrictions drivers should just stick to them, not worry about whether they will get caught if they speed.

I happen to almost agree with you on the last statement. I'm not going to bother reading the government website, i've read the police stats on causes of accidents and have no need to see the government try to spin it to say what they like.
Anyway, I say I almost agree. If the speed limit were normally 90 and the roadworks limit was 70 i'd agree that people should stick to it.

When were the roadworks finished? I drove to doncaster on the 22nd dec, and never noticed anything about a 50 limit. I was doing 70.. i really hope I'll be ok??

First day without roadworks were the 21st (or was it 22nd, I can't remember precisely) and works are NOT today (04/01) back, so 70 it is for the moment.

It'll be easy to tell when the 50mph speed limit is reinstated as you'll see a big sign with "50" written on it...

The limit is there to protect the workers in the road closure.

The cameras may flash but there is no film in them

I have just been flashed twice tonight and both times I was doing well under the legal limit.
One was on the m18 which I use very often and the other was on the parkway nr the city centre,now both my car and the one behind me were both doing 35 in the 40 zone and as to the one on the M18 again 2 cars mine and the guy behind were both flashed when we were doing 45 in the 50 zone.
If I get a ticket for this I will certainly be appealing against the fine and points.me thinks something is wrong with the cameras ,either that or they are calibrated at the wrong speed,:mad:
