What is meant is, on the desktop or from the start button should be a my computer icon.Right click and open properties, then goto Hardware > Device manager
, it should open with a list of everything that is installed , if any devices are not working they will show in yellow. On mine USB devices are at the bottom of the list.
PS this is a non tekky answer ,so someone will eventually recover enough to be able to give a more expert answer.

Thanks Matsalleh, I tried that, but when I look at the device, it has a yellow exclamation mark and question mark, so then when I click into that, it says re install drivers, and asks me for disc, so I put disc in, and it says cannot find necessary hardware/software, cant remember which!!! And on the box it says should just be plug and play and you should only need to install if you are windows 98 :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: Have you any more suggestions? Other than take back for a refund!!!

The timing of this thread is remarkable!

Is the MP3 player a Rio Carbon by any chance? I too am having difficulties getting a Dell Demension 9100 with XP SP2 to recognise my daughters Rio Carbon. It should be straight forward USB plug and play. Windows acknowledges that it's plugged in and Device Manager shows it to be installed with no problems. However, it doesn't show up in My Computer and neither the bundled software (Rio Music Manager) or Windows Media Player 10 sees it as an installed device. Yet when I plug it into my other two PC's and my work's laptop it installs just fine. The other PC's are slightly older and run XP SP1 however I'm pretty sure it's not a SP1/2 issue.

As I work in the IT field this is now starting to frustrate me. I will watch this thread in anticipation of someone more knowledgeable than me to point out what, no doubt, will be the blindingly obvious solution ;)

Follow up.....

Planned well before this MP3 problem arose, I have just changed the anti-virus on all my pc's from Norton to AVG Free edition.

Guess what? The MP3 player is now showing up in My Computer and is recognised by various other software. It now works!!

Baffled

doesnt surprise me, Norton gets in to all sorts, and if your using the trial versoin of norton, it can totally kill your internet when the trial period expires.. norton is probably the worst "security" kit out there :/

As for jaynie38's Problem, I would suggest trying a different USB port to start with... I know that some motherboards have some USB1.0 and some USB2.0 ports, it May be that the player isnt compatable with one or the other...

Failing that you will have to Go back into the Device Manager (Where you saw the yellow explanation mark) and right click > Uninstall (Make sure the player isnt plugged in at the time) - reboot your machine, then install the drivers that came with the mp3 player (BEFORE You plug it in)... once installed, reboot your PC (to be sure) and then plug in the player...

The other thing is your USB ports my not have enough power for the device, this is a common problem with lower-end machines, so I suggest unplugging all other USB devices before plugging in the Mp3 player (Except keyboard and mouse obviously, if theyer USB) -- if this is the case and resolves the problem, you will need to buy a Powered, USB hub, (comes with a mains lead, and will power your USB devices externally)

Hope one of these fixes it, or atleast gives someone else an idea of something to try ;)

Plug and play my ar*e!!!

Right then, this is the latest, I un installed all my out of date norton virus etc, and re installed a different one. Plugged my mp3 in the USB the little balloon 'Found new hardware' came on, so far so good, then installation wizard came on, asked me to install cd, cd started whirring, then box came up 'Cannot install Hardware, Wizard cannot find software????'

Im not very computer literate, and this is really starting to stress me out, what a great way to see the new year in!!!

Have also tried other USB ports at back of computer but still same. Im going to try the website on the mp3 player and see if any joy there. Think there is definately something wrong with our system, as my daughter previously had an apple ipod, and that was the same, so we took it back!!!

Anyway will try the website and see what I can find, thanks for any help offered, and keep it coming, I will try owt!!!:) :) :)

as has alredy been said
install the driver software off the cd BEFORE plugging in the device tot he usb port

i myself had a problem with a device (cant remember which now) that wouldnt be recognised at all...i'd plugged it in before installing the software.
theres the odd device that just wont work when plugged in before you install software.
i got told to completely uninstall all usb devices and usb ports and reinstall em all, but i didnt, too much hassle, i think its fixed now tho tbh, cos ive reinstalled windows xp since

nope

device installing can be pretty straight forward

but then it can also be as awkward as it comes........depends on lots of things, hardware, software, drivers in xp, drivers on disc, drivers online, how the device is made and what its functions are

If Melthebell's advice doesn't work, and the answer to the above question is "yes", try turning the firewall off while you're trying to install the drivers.

jaynie38..

It may help those who want to help you if we knew what make and model your MP3 player is? I have done a heck of a lot of googling this past 24 hrs trying to find out how to fix the problems with the afore mentioned Rio Carbon, and discovered many others that had the same or similar problems.

Hi Simon, it is a MPMAN model MPF57 mp3/wma player 256mb. Hope this helps.
Also I have put the disc in, but nothing happening, then a screen comes up titled Driver (D:) Pictures - and asks what do you want windows to do? Highlighted is Open Folder to view Files using Internet Explorer.

So then it opens the disc, but at the top its saying: Files ready to be written to cd, and then underneath is files currently on CD and there are 5 options, how the heck do I install from this????

dont take the firewall off

you should have an icon in the task bar near the clock (bottom right) hover the mouse on em theyll tell you what they are. right click on the firewall one and select quit/exit or end something like that, closes it then till you next reboot

with the cd task box you should explore the cd and look for something like setup.exe or launch.exe
if theres no option like run cd

you could also close it and go into my computer and double click the cd drive to run it

jaynie38

morning meltheball, i hovered my mouse, but doesnt look like I have a firewall icon, just the virus thing. I will try that with the cd, thanks for your reply. :) :) :)

melthebell
31-12-2005, 09:30
you might just have xps firewall then

start/control panel/see if theres a windows firewall option or security centre - open it/select off (DO NOT forget to re enable after)

OR

start/connect to / show all connections/on the left should be a change firewall settings option
or right click on your internet connection select properties/advanced/in the windows bit at the top select settings (disable there)

I have now disabled the firewall thing. Put the disc in, one of the icons showed an exe bit, which was act to wave, it then installed USB Flash Disc, I then plugged in device, and instead of the noise 'ding dong' when you plug something in, it gave 3 little quick 'dings' as if it didnt like the device??????    Is there any hope at all for this thing, or shall I just bin EVERYTHING !!! :D :D

have you looked in my computer? there should be a removable disc after your hard drives and cd drives

try rebooting with it plugged in too

These repeated "dings" are like it is a poor physical connection. Connecting/Disconnecting

Do they go up and down in pitch/tone?

I had a similar problem with a modem requiring a wiggle or two until it connected properly.

I re booted with the device plugged in, when I checked on the device manager, there is a little yellow question mark saying no drivers installed for this device, so when I click update drivers, it searches, then cannot locate, I could try to click on Instal from a list or specific location, but that all looks a bit scary as it is advanced, and I most certainly am not

jaynie38
31-12-2005, 11:02
hi cgsheff, i tried wiggling but nothing, when i unplug the device, it does a ding dong type tone, its just when i plug it in that it does the repeated dings.

ok, heres a guide...

Go to the device manager, where you see the yellow Question Mark..

Right click, and go to "Update Drivers"

On The first screen, select "No, Not at this time" (bottom option)

Second Screen choose "Install from a list of specified location" (Bottom option)

Next screen, choose the Bottom option "Dont Search, I will choose the driver to install" On the next screen choose "Show All Devices" (top)

When the next screen eventually comes up, click "Have Disk" (bottom right of the list) and hit the BROWSE button..

I dont know the layout of the driver CD, but im sure you can figure it out cause its usually something along the lines of...

X:\Driver\WinXP_2K\MODELNUMBER\

or some variation there-of (With X being your CD rom drive letter)

Find the driver file (will be a .inf and will look like a text file icon with a yellow thing on it) and click open, then ok.. this should Then install the driver..

If your SURE you picked the right driver, and it installed ok (diddnt give any errors) then you should be up and running..

If you Still have a Yellow Question Mark, or other symbol, then one of the following is true..

Your USB ports are faulty..
The CD Rom is not the correct one for the device..
The Device is faulty..

you MAY need to do a full reinstall of windows to fix it, i would only EVER try this as an extreme last resort though..

Hope you get it working

Hi there, I got so far in this process, until it asked for manufacturer, so i clicked unknown, as mine wasnt listed, then carried on but it just saying no information on this hardware, what do you think?? Also everything else i plug into this usb port is fine eg camera etc, but anything that involves an mp3 doesnt seem to work, eg IPOD, mobile phone with mp3 player etc.

Ghozer
31-12-2005, 12:33
If it listed manufacturer on a list (2 lists) Maunfacturer on the left, and devices on the right, its on that screen you click "have Disk" - then follow from there by clicking the BROWSE button..

Agent Smith
31-12-2005, 12:35
Hi There,

try this:-

Go to the device manager, where you see the yellow Question Mark..

Right click, and go to "Update Drivers"

On The first screen, select "No, Not at this time" (bottom option)

Second Screen choose "Search for the best driver in these locations" and tick "search removable media" and "include this location in the search"

Make sure that the driver CD is in the drive and then click the browse button and point this to your CD drive. ( Possibly D:\Drivers\winXP\) and try and find a file that is "x".inf The .inf file is the driver, BROWSE the CD until you find a .inf. Like the previous poster said, it may be in a directory called "drivers" or "WINXP" or both. Do a good search on the CD. You should find it.

When you do, click "next" and the driver should automatically install.

Hope this helps.

Hi , the only thing on the cd resembling drivers, is drivers for windows 98, I cant seem to recognise anything else that could be it, should i just click that one????

Ghozer
31-12-2005, 13:14
it MIGHT work with the windows 98 drivers (XP was supposed to be backwards compatable) though if it doesnt, it woudnt surprise me..
