ALZYMER 25-12-2005, 04:20 PM Does anyone remember the Saturday morning cinema's for kids? From the mid 50's til the early 60's I used to go to the Manor Cinema at the Manor top and the Lyric and the 'Little Dick' in Darnall. I think it was tanner in the front and a shilling in the posh seats. I'm wondering round about what year did the Saturday kids cinema start and when did it finish?
Plain Talker 25-12-2005, 04:51 PM I didn't go to the kid's matinees at the manor cinema, nor did I go to the Lyric.
I used to go to the "Minors' Matinee" on a Saturday morning, at the ABC on Angel Street, (where the Travel Inn is now) in the mid 1970s.
it cost five new pence to get in. I remember that my "boyfriend" at the time would, to get out of paying, say "I'll see you inside!" When we got inside, then he'd be there with his mates, causing mayhem! (And, of course, ignoring me!)

melthebell 25-12-2005, 04:57 PM i remember going to the kids matinees in the late 70s
i also remember seeing all the big films when they came out
superman
star wars
close encounters
etc
sweetdexter 26-12-2005, 05:20 AM I remember as part of the celebration of V.E Day.
We went to the Ritz Saturday kids show( I think it was a matinee )
I remember a bunch of us racing down the side of the Ritz to the cheap seats.
I do not know who paid.
This would be in 1945

The end of the saturday 'flicks' was when they changed to bingo halls.
This was after everyone bought Tellys and stopped going out so much to the pictures.
In the case of the Heeley Picture Palace this would be around 62 or 63.
I remember Pat Pheonix opening the new Bingo hall, and all the crowds turning out to see 'Elsie Tanner' who she played in Coronation St
No idea when they first started though, it was befor the very early fifties as I can remember as young child longing to be old enough to go.
Happy days when we seemed to have long hot summers and it snowed very winter:)
Im getting maudlin now so I'll get off;) :D

Ooh I used to go there in the early 70s for minors matinee and, before that, the Tufty Club and remember all those cheesy Children's Film Foundation movies.
Tufty The Squirrel once turned up with a whole plastic zebra crossing and we all had to show we knew how to cross roads safely before getting to settle down to watch the movie!

arrodbo 26-12-2005, 12:13 PM I used to go the Ritz in the early 1950s and there used to be a lad who use to sing" lay that pistol down" on the stage before the picture started then we woud watch cartoons and a cowboy film. if we had some cash we would buy a threepeny Walls ice cream. after the flicks we would react the films by running down Herries road from Wordsworth Ave. where the Ritz was. From memory it cost 7 old pennies (3p) ish

Yep! We used to go to the Little Dick on Sat morn ing. The 2 old Commishioners on the door were twins. they used to be pushing you in like sardines, if you got on the front row there you were bent double trying to watch the film. Gene Autrey, Roy Rogers,
3 Stooges. cartoons. if you were lucky you had enough money to go to the drink Shop for a vimpto. Good memories Alzymer

Little_Alex 27-12-2005, 01:18 PM my mom worked at the ABC and I was there every Saturday mornI used to love it. Still got my ABC minors badge tucked away. When she stopped working there I sometimes went to the Essoldo or the flea pit as it was called up Sheff lane top:)

I used to go to the Little Dick and the Regal on Staniforth Road on Saturday mornings. Dad would give me 1/2d (one and tuppence) a penny each way on the Tram 6d to get in and 6d to spend from the ice cream lady. I can't remember any 1/-d seats. I have no idea how old I was, it must have been around the early 50's when I used to go. I remember loving Nioka the jungle girl and hating Woody Woodpecker. My husband who I didn't know at the time used to get in and out over the gate, he was the youngest of 7 boys and there was never any money left in the pot for trips to the pictures.
dynamicdebz 08-01-2006, 12:42 AM I use to go to the miners show at the ABC cinema in the 70's.
If it was your birthday, so long as you went on the stage with your birthday card you would get a free pass for the following week. My sisters & I would share our cards & milk it for the following few weeks. As we use to get 5p to pay & 5p for sweets that meant we had a whole 10p for sweets. for a few weeks, never got caught, every one was doing it.
More arrow bars to buy.

hutch 08-01-2006, 01:30 PM Late 40's early 50's The Capital Sheffield Lane Top. cowboy films if I remember correctly we played cowboys all the way down to Hillside ave after a visit to the cinema.
Does anyone remember the accident at the bottom of the hill from the cinema a car killed 2 young men and crashed through the wall the repair can still be seen, the road at the time was busy with people walking from the cinema it was dark and would be aprox 1951?
artisan 08-01-2006, 01:36 PM When Zorro was on we all used to leave our arms out of our macs ( we all had macs in those days) and fasten the top button to pretend it was a cape and sword fence with bits of stick.
Sad little gits we were
caramac55 08-01-2006, 02:19 PM Remember seeing the Love bug at the Esseldo I think it was called at that time. It was located at Lane top, seem to remember it becoming a bingo hall later. Happy days

Deja Vu, Yes i seem to recall writing this before--
Yes, I used to go to the Park Pictures or 'Park Bughouse" as we called it.
And pk014b7161 "absolute bedlam" was to put it mildly.
We would go sat morn mid 60s armed with our frozen jubbly, lucky bag and a few penny arrow bars, when possible sit right at the back, not only for snoggin purposes but simply when the goodies came on every one would cheer but when the baddie's came on along with abuse there would be half eaten jubbys, apple core's and bits of bubbly gum thrown at the screen, I once had someone's baraclava thrown at me (No: it didn't still have the head still in it).
CHAIRBOY 09-01-2006, 07:59 AM I was only recently, telling my wife, who is not from Sheffield, that a shop complex being renovated at Crookes, used to function as the Crookes Picture Palace and provided the locals with Saturday matinees. That is the shop which was 'Sound as a Pound'. That led to the Walkley Palladium, on South Road, being discussed.
