designbunny 03-03-2004, 10:34 PM Hopefully buying a house in this area, just wondering what everyone's thoughts were about Meersbrook + Heeley?
What are the parks like?
Does anyone live around there? + what do you think the areas good + bad points are?
Good places to visit nearby?
Funky Dave 03-03-2004, 11:23 PM I've lived most of my life near to those areas, and I've had many good friends who've lived there. The areas are ok, being fairly close to local amenities such as small shops, pubs, takeaways and restaurants, and you're not too far away from town. There isn't really any big supermarket in walking distance though, your nearest one is probably in Millhouses.
Meersbrook park is gorgeous in the daytime. During summer I take a book to the top of the park (which has a breathtaking view of the city), and I'll sit there all afternoon without getting any hassle. At night, a lot of the green spaces do suffer from young hooligans though, and you're best off staying away.
I have heard anecdotes about drugdealers living in Meersbrook, and my friend's house got broken into many many years ago, but generally, if you don't go looking for trouble, you won't encounter any.
Overall then, I'd say that there are better areas in Sheffield, but Meersbrook and Heeley have a lot going for them. PM me if you want to know anything specific.

In a city of great views, this really is one of the very best. In my younger days I used to go jogging in Meersbrook Park, and used to actually run up to the top of the hill, up the footpath. My extreme physical distress once I reached the top was always mitigated by the stunning view I had if I turned round and looked across Sheffield.
I used to live in Meersbrook in the early nineties, and loved it round there. It was a very friendly area, with a few students, lots of locals, and a great mix all round. Mind you, I've not been back for years, so things could have changed.
designbunny 05-03-2004, 03:35 PM thank you :)
at the mo we live just behind Park Hill, so know all about drugdealers etc! We've driven around Meersbrook/heeley lots + it looks good to us, fairly quiet really.
Its a shame there's not a gym or supermarket nearer, but i guess the park will be my gym! and at the moment we just get in the car to go to safeway anyway.
There's a big school at the back on the streets behind rushdale road somewhere, is this still a school or is it something else?

Dunno about that one though it was Rushdale that I used to live on. My nephew goes to Meersbrook Bank Primary which I think is on Derbyshire Lane, and that seems fine.
Funky Dave 05-03-2004, 08:06 PM Meersbrook Bank is a good primary school, and you've got Newfield secondary about 15 minutes walk away, where pupils seem to get grades on par with the national average.
There is a gym on the edge of Woodseats/Millhouses, which isn't too far away from Meersbrook (just down the road from the supermarket in fact).
designbunny 05-03-2004, 09:12 PM Damon - what number did you used to live at?
Where is the supermarket in Millhouses - is that the 24hr tesco? that doesn't seem near - tho my sense of direction isnt established yet for meersbrook!
Funky Dave 05-03-2004, 09:26 PM Yes, that's the Tesco I was on about. It's not that near, but it's the nearest big one. Alternatively, there are loads of smaller supermarkets on Woodseats, but they aren't as well stocked.
philg 17-03-2004, 01:40 PM I have lived in Meersbrook most of my life, and I think it's a great place to live, there is a good mix of people of all different races, 2 very good primary schools, not sure about the seconadary school, Meersbrook park as some of the best views in Sheffield, as for the gangs, there is a bit if this going on, but not enough to make you want to leave the area. House prices in the area have risen quite a lot in the last year or so. 3 bed terrace are about 85K - 90K, but there are also large houses which are anything upto 250K - 300K, there are a lot of local shops and places to eat, there is a new gym that as opened on Broadfield Road, and the supermarket at Woodseats are not that far. Good transport links, not far from the town centre, getting a bit studenty, lots of renting accomadation.
All in all a top place to live

I used to live at 61 Rushdale Road. It was my mate's house and I used to rent off him - my room was in the attic with a fab view. We were a couple of doors down from an 'old ladies blue rinse' type hairdresser called Janet & Jenny's. Don't know if that's still there.
They were great drunken responsibility-free days!
there is a suparmarket at heeley bottom chesterfield rd going towards town plus lots of other shops etc meersbrook parks nice i agree really nice views and greaves park is also good for walking though the woods
birdsandbees 27-03-2004, 04:15 PM Living in Meersbrook at the moment, with hubbie and 2 teenagers, both went to local primary school, taken them out of the local secondary though. The area is great for pre school kids with the playground in the park sectioned off so dogs cant get it (unless some nice kind person leaves the gate open), once you make the walk up to the top of the park the views over Sheffield are stunning. We have a local gym now Virgin moved in, Heeley swimming baths, and Heeley City farm are just a short walk away. There is a good selection of pubs, restaurants and local shops, a great mix of people the older kids don’t have much to keep them occupied so do tend to meet on street corners, but don’t cause too much trouble.
Meersbrook caters for all age groups so if you are looking for somewhere long term to bring up a family through to retiring I can easily recommend buying here.
