Hello all.

I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me.

I'm a constable with South Yorkshire Police, and am searching for any information anybody might have regarding Sheffield's Police Boxes.

Any information is of use whether it be amusing stories, recollections or even just the whereabouts of where boxes used to be situated.

If of course anybody has any personal photographs of any boxes, I would be really interested in seeing them.

Thank you for looking, and I'm hoping you folks can be as helpful as you have been on other topics.

Mark.

There is a great example of a well- preserved police box, outside the town hall, on the corner of Pinstone Street and Surrey Street.

(reknowned for stating the obvious)

The one outside the town hall is in a "fetching" pale green livery, wheras the Doctor's is a nice, staid shade of dark blue.

I seem to remember there was one on the end of Harcourt road sitting just in the grounds of crookes valley park. In fact if you have a look over the fence you can still see its concrete foundations and the drain's are still embedded in there too..

Cheers folks, thats plenty to start off with.

The Town Hall box is still there and in regular police use, although the public telephone is no longer in available.

I'd heard about the one in Fizallan Square (although I don't know exactly whereabouts) however there is a more modern version now there, the other side of the square opposite the Hungary Wolf.

Harcourt Road sounds interesting Honeyplanet, think I'll have a look for those foundations.....

Wasn't there one on Chesterfield Road between Albert Road and Thirlwell Road? I seem to remember passing it on my way to and from school at St Wilfrids, Meersbrook Vestry Hall.

Hiya Mark,
You can see some police boxes in these photo's. I seem to remember one on Meadow Street / Port Mahon in the 50's, maybe some of the other regulars from the Upperthorpe area might also remember this, anyway you can look on here

I recently watched a video of 1950's Sheffield and spotted quite a few of the boxes, most in green and white as PT mentioned and all to a similar design.

Wicker Arches as someones already mentioned, just about where the lift came down from Victoria station.

The Neepsend corner of Hillfoot Bridge.

Outside what was The English Steel Corporation, at the junction of Upwell Street and Brightside Lane.

Another one on Brightside Lane at the junction of Newhall Road.

Attercliffe Road near to the junction of Staniforth Road (just about where Robin Hoods Bay chip shop is now.

Firth Park Road, just below the old library, opposite Hamilton Road.

and the last one I spotted on Abbey Lane at Woodseats, there are probably more that I missed.

If anyone is interesested who has broadband let me know and I will upload some video clips for you to see.

docmel,

A video of police boxes, I hope I'm not quite that sad, just yet.
No its a video of Sheffield Trams, I've no interest in trams either just the buildings in the background.
I've uploaded some video clips, just waiting for them to be authorised.
Theres lots of views of 50's Sheffield, some colour, some black and white.

:) I was not accusing you of being sad - unless you were a retired copper I could not see anyone owning such a vid - I just wondered if it had been made by some Government department - they had a habit of filming lots of 'nerdy' stuff which is avidly collected now.

There used to be one built into the wall of my first school in Bradway (1953-5)

As infant school kids we used to talk to the policemen as they were reporting in.

Sheffield picture so6520 shows the school wall before the police box.

There used to be one at the bottom of Thirlwell Road near the Red Lion
They used to say you could see it rocking about when they took people in for 'questioning'

Yes thats the one, it would have been the 50's when it was there.
As coppers in those days were all big blokes I dont think more than two could fit in at a time.
It seems amazing these days that coppers were patroling the streets on foot, being close enough to each other that they could communicate with each other by whistle!
If there was a cop on each street these days people would be complaining of harrassment!
Funny how it was a lot safer then though?

I can remember one on halifax road at Wadsley bridge accross from the white horse pub. Probably 30 years ago. It was on the bit of ground where the cars park now to visit the shops. Directly outside kerfoots fishing tackle.
