View Full Version : Wincobank
Hi,
moving up to Sheffield shortly. Seen a couple of places in Wincobank, great houses, but can't make mind up about the locality...
Any views please?
Cheers!
Very close to Meadowhall shopping centre, which might be ok if you like that sort of thing and also very easy access to the M1. The area as a whole isn't too bad, there is far worse areas to live in.
lynseyscott 29-04-2003, 23:46 I have heard this area is near not so nice, dodgy areas
Michael_W 30-04-2003, 00:09 Have a browse through some of the posts on this forum Sauce, to get an idea what the preferred areas in the City are, FYI - I agree with lynseyscott !
PaulTansley 30-04-2003, 06:11 Wincobank is not a bad area, it has another estate near by which is a dodgy area.
6 out of 10 on the nice-aty scale for the area there are far worse areas, believe me.
I spent most of my childhood in wincobank ,thats were i was born.
i loved it then.
i mean real wincobank at the bottom.
it infuriates me when people call the flower estate wincobank.
its not wincobank at all its shiregreen.
and the two places couldn't be more different.
i know ive lived in them both.
the flower estate is not the ideal place to live.
mumoftrips 28-06-2004, 19:20 I have lived in Wincobank all my life and I love it. It's close to some great schools, Meadowhall, motorway access, and the people that live round here aren't that bad at all. and I agree with Tara, the Flower Estate is not Wincobank, but Shiregreen.
Depends whether or not you like child abusers/neglecters as neighbours.

No doubt you are jumping on the back of the recent news story about a set of scum neglecting their kids.
Bit of a shame you have to make a political point out of it, again just to put an area down. You remark would assume wherever in Wincobank you are you run the risk of having neighbours who are possibly child abusers/neglecters.
I had thought even you wouldn't have stooped that low.
Example, ever seen many of the goth kids up on Devonshire Green, smoking pot, drinking alcohol etc when many are not old enough to (drink at least)? Not all of them are from 'less affluent' backgrounds, infact many of them are from the S10/S11 areas of Sheffield, where their parents may have a nice house and healthy income, in many respects they are not abused as such, but just given money to get out of the way, and cause somebody else some misery. I suppose in many ways, its also a form of neglect wouldn't you say.
Just because neighbours have a £400k house and two £30k cars doesn't mean they are good parents.

Source??
Source is simple, you may be aware of Victoria Halls, directly opposite the skate park, on Devonshire?
Well, we do speak to them, and have done for 2 years now - so the source is nothing short of direct.
Anything else?
Yes - real facts and figures.
Wincobank is great the flower estate was wincobank actually however its now non existant apart from nicer bit near brackern hill school however think that bit is classed as firth park any way. Its a lovely area with nice schools and t020 not all the kids are neglected (one story and hes off on one) Any way id go for it chuck!!!!

What else can you say about him Chri5!! Facts and figures, what a berk! Bet you could count all your friends on one hand...!
Since t020 is on a moral crusade against child abusers, why doesnt he come down to Devonshire Green and ask them where they are from. Yes t020, the reality will hit home then, once their folks are passed on, THESE are the kids that will own homes in S10/S11 - hope you sleep well tonight!
What on earth are you going on about?
Hiya,
I've heard the recent child abuse scandel in wincobank. The area appears quite rough. I would not move there!!!
wincobank avenue is where that family of child abusers came from.
look on any map and you will see it is at the very top-on the flower estate.-shiregreen, not wincobank.
if its wincobank then why does the flower estate come under shiregreen tennants association.
when we were young we were always having gang wars with
as we called the shiregreeners.(or another name i cant say)
and this was with the flower estate lot.
just because its called wincobank avenue doesn't mean its in wincobank.
manchester road isnt in manchester.
i read where wincobank hill use to stretch lower down further in to wincobank originally.
the only council houses in wincobank were at the very bottom of newman road. pulled down in late 60s-70s.
the rest is flower-shiregreen.
1Man&hisBMW 01-07-2004, 21:19 ......but surely that doesnt make sense?!?!?:loopy:
Im sure Eccleshall Road is in Eccleshall aswell....innit??

No.
1Man&hisBMW 01-07-2004, 21:39 Then you will understand, that scum living in one house on an estate doesnt make all the estate scum, also as noted before its not technically in Wincobank...
Now, Im off to Eccleshall to see some drunken students spewing up..... road that is..... ;)
Roads named after places usually refer to the place the road leads to, not to where the road actually is.
For example, you'll find Penistone Road in Sheffield and Sheffield Rd in Penistone.
Glossop Rd in Sheffield is the road that goes to Glossop etc.......

Clearly you lack the humour to see the wind up there...
Where do you get off hey? No wise cracks about bus stops either...!
well im probably thick as well cos i cant see the wind up.
r u seeing things have you spent too much time on stocksbridge by pass .
well i get the point of not rubbishing all the rest of estate cos of a family, and you can get child abusers anywhere, But lets face it
the flower estate has more than its fair share of shall we say
undesirables.
it always has ,even in the 60s.
there are good people there who try to help with the community
as we did ,we started a couple of groups for the kids etc,
but then the place got burgled etc.
there was at least 4 well known burglars on our road alone.
i know other estates have em but on the flower theyre in droves.
a lot of the houses have gone now i know but is it any better.
Before anyone asks, i had no choice but to live up there then as i
was on the rehousing list nearly 7 yr and thats the only area i could have. i needed a 3 bedroom.
AlbaKirky 16-07-2004, 11:49 Since t020 is so fond of facts & figures, can he show me some facts that prove there has NEVER been a case of child abuse or neglect in the heaven that must be S10/11?
From Wincobank, and proud of the fact. I have friends & relations in S10, but no wish whatsoever to live there!
dancing_man 16-07-2004, 15:26 I lived there some time ago. It was a nice community. Lot's of solid hard working ordinary people. Not particularly a place to find professionals or many students. But not a bad community either.
The local kids don't tend to roam in from neighbouring areas - they can't be bothered going over the hills!! - so i shouldn't worry to much about where it is near.
Hi I am from Shiregreen/Winkobank and although i now live on Eccy Rd i would recommend living in the area,, but hope u have a car as even i still feel dodgy walking down to the local shops and i have lived around the area for 20 years or so...
If the house is nice go for it ....
I've lived in Wincobank for 2 years prior to that Firth Park but lived in lower Shiregreen as a child. I have found it to be ok round here, I'm near the bottom of Newman Road so a distance away from the flower estate not particularly had any problem but then I don't go up the road so probably wouldn't notice.
Incidentally Tara I've always thought of the flower estate as being High Wincobank but my mum classed it as Shiregreen because the school on Bracken Road used to be Shiregreen School. However I don't think the tenants association has any connection as these are recent. I believe originally The Flower Estate as with The Brushes Estate down at Firth Park was a separate estate as they have been named but somehow got incorporated into the others along the years. Oh well, I don't know very fuzzy round the edges anyway.:D
I have lived in wincobank now for nearly a year.We did a lot of driving round at different times to see what the area was like.
I think it depends what sort of person you are and what you do, weather or not you would settle there. We are a family and we have a car, and we keep ourselves to our selves.
we are fortunate enough to have good neighbours who we did approach before moving, and got advice about the area from them. But in any area you can live within 300meters of an area and it be worlds apart. But speaking from my experience we see some people who you think may be dodgy but none of it effects us .We don't have kids loitering around our home and we live our lives with our family not our neighbors .
We are protective parents and wouldn't let our kids play on the street any way, we occupy and enjoy our children's company. There are lots of walking areas.
You know yourself do your research because its who you live near and what happens near you. But we have been happy hear
If it helps, my sister has recently moved to Wincobank, and the help and support she has had from neighbours has been marvellous ... its and industrial area, yes, but it seems to me there is a lot of community spirit, which is sadly lacking in parts of Ecclesall.
ricgem2002 22-10-2007, 22:27 as a resident of the flower estate for over 30 years i disagree with a lot of the comments made about this estate .true in the early 80s/90s it did have a bad reputation. but since the demolition of part of the estate and the scum bag families moving to other parts of sheffield ( they may even be your neighbours now) this estate with the subsequent decent homes work is now transforming the area.local people are now going to more council meetings about the estate (well i seen a few new faces there ) plus the redevelopment of the estate due to start soon or early next year (which has been a long time in coming) with houses for sale/housing association will see this estate hopefully turned around . just look at the houses for sale on the old co op dairy which is just across the road from the (flower) selling in the region of 120 grand . anyway rant over:thumbsup:
