View Full Version : Ethiopian Cuban Restaurant on Arundel Gate
orangehelen 21-12-2005, 02:08 PM We went to the new Ethioppean Cuban restaurant for a works do last week and it was GREAT! Fantastic food, frendly service and finished off with an authentic Ethioppean coffee ceremony!  We had an Ethioppean buffet- pancakes and various spicy/ not spicy stews, both meaty and veggie, but they also do Latin food.
It's very central- just opposite TJ Hughs on Arundal Gate but not that prominent so I'm worried they won't get the custom they deserve!
Bilge 21-12-2005, 02:12 PM Sounds good. I've not been in many of the shops, bars or restaurants on that bit. They all look so awful. So if somewhere nice has opened it may encourage a general upturn round there. Let's hope so.
Stoaty 23-12-2005, 11:11 AM Two of my mates swear by this place..
Will defo check it out with lady stoat next year!

Eh???
Anyway - this is an old thread - wasn't there a fire there? I think it's closed.
neeeeeeeeeek 21-02-2008, 01:14 PM It's open again and they do club nights down stairs.
:)
samstar999 21-02-2008, 01:18 PM Oh I see. Have you been? Any good? I agree with jemson though, it looks a bit 'dodgy'.
craigpugh 22-02-2008, 12:53 AM OK, this place IS open- it shut for a while last year but has been open again since december. I love it so much i ate there three times in 2 days ! its really really great food. It's also ridiculously cheap.
Its certainly not 'rough' or 'dodgy', but it is fairly basic i guess. Having said that the toilets are clean and the downstairs has been smartened up and re-done. I think its well worth a shot. I have never had food quite like it, have taken about 14 different people there in groups and what not, and all have raved about it.
Veggie stuff- lots of veggie options including 'fasting' platters/ mixtures which are things like spicy buttered cabbage, lentil dishes, really yummy stuff. Dawit will also help you out with the menu choices, he'll do stuiff as spicy or mild as you ask, and i;m sure would help out with extra veggie stuff too if you ask.
Heartilly recommend it. So pleased it's back!!
swordfish1 22-02-2008, 09:30 AM And just to repeat an earlier question, what is the restaurant called?
feargal 22-02-2008, 09:40 AM ... and is it where the "4 Restaurants" pizza place used to be?
craigpugh 23-02-2008, 02:19 AM Not sure what it used to be but is directly opposite tj hughes, in the block that is before the NCP car park. In reference to the earlier question "sounds interesting whats it called and where is it" i thought that poster was joking cos the post title is "Ethiopian Cuban Restaurant on Arundal Gate" which contains all the clues.
One problem i've found is a lack of phone number. But it's informal and doesnt need reservations.

.
So, if I mentioned a "italian mexican" restaurant on division street, you wouldn't expect anyone to ask what it was called, or possibly where abouts on Division street?:loopy:
craigpugh 24-02-2008, 01:29 AM There isnt a restaurant called 'italian mexican' is there? And there are several italian restaurants on division street. Whereas this one is THE 'Ethiopian Cuban Restaurant'- ie not everso origianl name, and there is only the one restaurant on arundel gate, and only one ethiopian restaurant in sheffield! So dont point yer finger twirling round head emoticon at me! And i said it's opposite TJ hughes so what's the problem. No need to be rude dear.
scottwoodbur 24-02-2008, 03:13 PM its called ethnic cuban restaurant i do the security there
jemson 24-02-2008, 08:49 PM I`m trying to persuade my wife to let us give it a go. What`re the prices like and is it licensed or byob?
scottwoodbur 24-02-2008, 10:53 PM its licensed
gularscute 25-02-2008, 09:39 PM It's fantastic. It's cheap and friendly, the food is great and it's completely unpretentious. I can't understand why anyone would describe it as rough, it's just not needlessly flashy.
checan 25-02-2008, 09:48 PM its great!
dawit doesnt get as many customers as he deserves,
it isnt rough at all,
i higly reccomend it!
chem1st 25-02-2008, 10:14 PM I went and thoroughly enjoyed it, I was going to go when it opened back up but forgot, after reading this ill make sure to visit soon.
Everyone I know who has been has enjoyed it, especially the food.
welchiewelch 25-02-2008, 11:07 PM Its called Ethio-Cubana restaurant. The food is excellent and Dawit the owner will give you a proper introduction to ethiopian food and not charge you a great deal for it.
Try it
i think best kebab is the best their food are delicious and they also have good deals :)
craigpugh 25-02-2008, 11:47 PM its called ethnic cuban restaurant i do the security there
ey up, i was passing in town today so i checked. i was wroing before, its Ethio-Cuban (or it might have been Ethio- Cubano - was in me car couldnt hang about)- deffo not 'Ethnic'
craigpugh 25-02-2008, 11:49 PM ps i have major cravings for it now... i had the raw beef in pepper marinade last time- very different but try it if you like blue/ rare stuff- but this was RAW- only cooked from the axcid in the marinade, it was so tender and tasty, mmmm mmm. But the less raw stuff is good too... never thought i'd get so excited by cabbage, but that cabbage thing they do is amazing!!

I think it's the part of town, not the restaurant that people are referring to as 'rough'. I know I was. It's a bit dingy on that side of the street - but I might try this place tomorrow. Is it open early evening?
theripsaw 26-02-2008, 12:42 PM For what its worth I think the Star reviewed that place a while back. Might be on their website
Ah yes;

Tine.S. 26-02-2008, 04:26 PM The place is great! My favorite restaurant in Sheffield. They also have a club in the cellar on weekends. Normally open till 4am.
RubyTuesday 26-02-2008, 06:54 PM Really looking forward to trying this place - was supposed to go last summer but it shut down the day before! Will have to go soon :)
craigpugh 26-02-2008, 07:50 PM ha ha- just read the star interview, that is just about spot on. Except that since 2006 when that was written they have done up the downstairs.
I reckon that the stretch of shops there will pick up after they have finished the major re-fit of the corner office block whicyh is currently under way and the scaffolding comes down.
Try it!
elethiomel 27-02-2008, 05:28 PM This sounds good and I hope its a success. It really is a shame it is situated in that grotty location though, I think people might be put off by the general air of seediness.
Another one on my list to try!
craigpugh 27-02-2008, 09:23 PM Regarding the grotty location, i reckon it will be on the up pretty soon- the office block on the corner is getting a major major looking refit, and then the roxy is getting a new life as the carling (?) Academy. And behind it fitzalien square is being lined up for a big peace gardens style refurb to match the new hyper posh hotel/ restaurant conversion for the amazing post office buidling there.

Thats good news, that area definitely needs a facelift!
RubyTuesday 09-03-2008, 12:14 PM Went here last night after reading all the great reviews and was very impressed. It's not the most glamourous of venues but there was a lovely atmosphere, the service was excellent and the food gorgeous.
We told the owner that we were veggies and he suggested we try his recommendation as a surprise! We did - we got about 6 different dishes, a salad and the rice bread to eat with and they were all delicious. With 2 rum and cokes and 2 pints, the bill came to £27 - an absolute bargain. I will definitely be going back and would encourage people to try this place for something a little bit different.

You are right there a friend of a friend said he had seen better looking field kitchens than this and I know I shouldnt let it, but its kind of put me off trying it out.

It depends what you're after I suppose, but if you're looking for really good food with great service then I'd throuroughly recommend it. If you're after chic and stylish decor then I'd say give it a miss! This place has no pretensions - you know exactly what you're getting, and although I would have been put off by the venue had I not read the reviews on here, when I actually went, there was a lovely atmosphere. It is amazing what low lighting and candles can do to hide a multitude of sins!
jemson 10-03-2008, 03:56 PM defo gonna try it soon as.
is it open every day? can u byob? and does anyone have a phone number for it?
ta !!!
RubyTuesday 10-03-2008, 04:14 PM can u byob? and does anyone have a phone number for it?

I think it's open everyday, the phone number is 0114 275 1120 and I don't think it's byo - enjoy!
jemson 10-03-2008, 05:15 PM Thanks Ruby! :D
smurf_anna 11-05-2008, 10:36 PM I visited here with a friend last night and was so impressed with the whole experience. From walking in the door, we got a really warm welcome and friendly, helpful service. The guy who served us asked us what kind of meats/spiciness we'd like to try, and brought us a selection - one main lamb dish, and about 5 smaller dishes including lamb, beef, chicken and potatoes, as well as a salad and plenty of injera (bread). There was masses of food, all delicious, and far more than we could eat unfortunately, though we were warned how filling the injera was.
Amazingly, this huge meal for 2 people came to only £15. We also had a bottle of red Ethiopian wine (£15) that was recommended and went well with our food.
I can't praise the service and hospitality enough, it was so different to most places that it really stands out. The staff even offered to advise my friend (who lives in London) on where to find an Ethiopian restaurant there. Will definitely be back, and very soon.
fabulous_girl 12-05-2008, 12:51 PM Name that quote: It started out fine, she's a very nice person, and we're sitting and we're talking at this Ethiopian restaurant that she wanted to go to. And I was making jokes, you know like, "Hey I didn't know that they had food in Ethiopia? This will be a quick meal. I'll order two empty plates and we can leave." Yeah, nothing from her not even a smile.

You must have been sat right by us! And we had a similarly great experience too although we went for the Ethiopian beer. Was the wine drinkable?!
