View Full Version : Tsunami: Where was god- Xmas Day
I know this is a little in advance, but I want to get the rant in early for xmas day.
I've just seen the ad for this new program for xmas day this year- and I have to say it looks intriguing to me.
The basic premise as far as I can tell is that the reporter would like to know that how can there be an all loving god after an event like the tsunami?
Did god intentionally allow people to suffer during the festive period?
Its a controversial one- but I like it
It asks questions about religion again.
Some of the people interviewed have given fairly weird quotes from what I saw as well such as
Death is your best friend
My children committed bad sins in their previous life
And my personal nutty favourite-
God did this because he loves us!
Absolute crap!
If this dosent kill the belief in god- that I dont know what else will.
alchresearch 21-12-2005, 13:16 I've not seen the programme but also saw the listing and thought it was quite tasteless and offensive, especially for Christmas Day.
Ousetunes 21-12-2005, 16:22 Okay, so the question regarding God (or god). Funny how the question only comes up when there is a disaster or someone dies for whatever reason.
Those who don't believe in an all loving God and probably never will, start shouting and screaming, asking where this god is, the very one they don't believe in.
They never ask the question where He is when life is trundling along nicely - which is more often the case.
Why blame God? What about what man has done to this beautiful planet? He has destroyed it and is still doing so. Maybe the effects of what man has done to God's creation - earth - is what unfortunately led to the tsunami? Man plays with nature and faces the consequences?
It's impossible to answer the question. Those with faith will believe that He was there to help the injured and those who lost relatives. I personally don't go along the lines of one's children being punished for the sins of either oneself or one's parents.
What worries me more is that if this programme is anything like the one I watched a couple of weeks back then it's going to be an unpleasant voyeuristic journey. That programme showed the bloated, dead bodies of young children lying beside their parents and left me feeling very uncomfortable.
I think the programme makers need to exercise both caution and respect.

I don't believe in god, but I'm sure there's a saying that goes "the lord works in mysterious ways".....
youwhatref 22-12-2005, 07:05 Gotta agree with Ousetunes i'm afriad. Not seen the TV episode but God created a wonderful planet and all to watch man rip it apart.

And man is 'God's' creation aswell, so he shot himself in the foot there didn't he.
A bit like a carpenter putting termites in the drawers of his latest Welsh dresser. Silly really, and not very bright.

I didnt think anyone still did!! I have the choice of over a hundred channels, and most of the time there's nothing worth watching on any of them, but at least it passes the time flicking through:wink:
Phanerothyme 22-12-2005, 17:58 assuming god exists and has a hand in the world:
god was there and did nothing to provoke or prevent it.
god was there and did provoke it
who knows the mind of god? only god can say whether the loss of these lives and the destruction that followed was a good thing. One can only hope that it is a good thing, else god is destructive and vengeful and we don't stand a chance....
I will continue the debate when I have had chance to watch the program later today- I cant wait to see what the producers come up with for this documentary.
Cliff Clavin 25-12-2005, 21:23 Around 216,000 people die in the Tsunami, maybe god stopped that number being 216,001.
Interesting why the title isn't "Tsnami-The Devil Attacks Again!" It seems blaming God these days brings in more viewers. I won't be one.

Saving 1 in 216,000 is hardly god like behaviour - even David James does better than that.
If our emergency services had that sort of success rate we'd want 'em all sacked!

You see that "1" as a number. That "1" could just be the most important person in the World:clap:
Don't judge life, accept life.

1 is generally thought by most people to be a number.
And calling somebody "the most important person in the world" is definately judgemental.
To most people the most important people are family and friends - and the thought that just one person out of 216,001 worth saving would be abhorrent to most people.
Aaaaggghhhhh
I couldnt tape it on my sky+ box as we already had two items taping on the go already - does anyone know if they are repeating the documentary this week?

"Could be" is not being judgmental, it is questioning, "is" is judgemental.
But OK lets take your view, what if "God" prevented that number being 1,000,000? Don't worry, I don't believe in this. What i'm trying to say, is people tend to forget "The Devil" is supposed to be bad guy, yet in this day and age it seems cool to blame God for all things bad. We tend not to mention all the good things though.
This thread is due a little logic methinks.
Has it crossed anybody's mind yet that he may have been celebrating his lad's birthday and was too p@ssed to do anything about it?
Well, we ARE living in the realms of make-believe here aren't we?
Nature, not some flight of fancy, killed those people. The same nature which causes 1000mph winds on Jupiter, and meteor strikes on some planet orbiting some distant star 85 billion miles away from the nearest sinful human.
