A lady I work with said she had had a cold that she passed onto her husband, who past it onto their daughter, who then passed it back to her.

What do you think?

The cold virus has the ability to mutate it's self.
So it's quite possibly she did get a mutation.

It's why it's pretty much still incurable

So if the virus mutates, strictly speaking it's not the same cold.
Does anybody know how frequently the common cold virus mutates?

From what I heard it mutates all the time so you can never get the same cold twice....ever! I guess that's why there's still no cure :)

You can't ever get the same cold twice because when you have that particular virus you develop antibodies to it and are then forever immune to that particular cold virus.

Someone may appear to get the same cold twice when they are actually getting two different colds in quick succession because the viruses are so prevalent at this time of year.

The cold viruses tend to mutate from year to year and not from person to person.

Also, there are many different viruses that cause cold symptoms. Some are more 'common' than others, but - I believe - all mutate as described above. Consequently, with so many different viruses - and strains of these viruses - around, it's no wonder we get so many colds in quick succession. I do anyway. Cough, cough.

Once you've got AIDS, you've pretty much got it. There isn't going to be a twice.

You can, however, be infected with more than one strain of the HIV virus.
