Any of you who get promotional texts from Fuel will know that they are announcing the opening of a new gay bar in Sheffield tonight.

Although I'm having a night in tonight, my roving reporter at Fuel tonight tells me that this is the Lions Lair. ;)

It's one bar I've never been in; does anyone know what kind of place it is?

It used to be the yorkshireman, a well known rock pub....turning into a gay bar !!!

Oh well, why not.

It was a gay bar about 4 years ago. It passed hands from the rockers to the gay community and it died on its feet. Trade flopped and the brewery passed it on to us to run. We got it rocking again before it became the Lions Lair.

Rent is very high on this bar, I'll be surprised if it lasts any length of time as a gay bar, based on the way it flopped last time.

Nothing at all against the gay community, but it just didn't work last time.

I agree........be amazed if it works......but its a very cosy and intimate little venue so it may prove me wrong! I wonder if they will still be doing the cuisine food as well.....

I just knew it would be some back-alley pub in the city centre, dont mean to be negative but no it aint gonna last either because the whole area the Lions Lair sits on will be demolished in the next few years to make way for the New Retail Quarter.

And now back on the subject of the lions lair...

I have just got a text from them saying they are opening on Friday
I only have one question....where the hell did they get my number from ?

Only place I can think of is when I had to fill a form out one night when I wandered into Fuel (for membership apparently) - should they be passing on my information - I think not

Will be having words shortly, have they never heard of the Data Protection Act ?

Well what a disapointment!

We called in for a pint last week (between Christmas and New Year). Ok so it was early (about 6pm) and there were only 4 people in yet the place was thick with smoke, and lit up like a football pitch under floodlights. No atmosphere at all, way too bright to be cosy and all the lighting did was highlight just how tatty the place is looking - ripped seats, stains on the walls and ceiling, and scuffs and marks on the walls.
Maybe it's got a completely different feel about it at night, or when it's full but in the state we saw it last week, we won't be rushing back.

Its a real shame, because Sheffield really needs a decent gay bar to go and have a pint or two and the way this was being announced by the Fuel team I was expecting so much more.

Does anyone know if there are any plans for a refurb? Shall we have a whip round for a tin of emulsion??

I'm not aiming to start an argument with this post, I'm just intrigued by this shift in focus at the Lion's Lair.

My comments are prompted in part by Buffy's earlier post, about the venue struggling as a gar bar previously.

It strikes me as an odd decision to change nothing about the bar other than it's target market, in fact, it comes accross as a snub to those people who may have been patronising the bar regulalry, but aren't gay. "Thanks for the custom over the past year, oh and by the way, we're becoming a gay bar from Monday"

What is the basis of this decision? Have they conducted market research etc, who has convinced them that this will work?

I can't help think a more suitable line to take would have been 'gay-friendly' - I appreciate this may be seen as a cop-out, but at the end of the day they are in the pub game to make money.

I'd also like to point out that I'm not trying to sway anyone's opinion, or even rob you of a new bar. Nor will I be put off from going into the Lions Lair - as long as none of you touch me ;)

Neil

By saying it is a gay bar now, doesn't mean that straight, or bi persons for that matter, cannot go in.
I'm sure all the old customers will be more than welcome as long as they don't have a problem with the gay clientele. I'm sure the touching of straight people will be kept to a minimum.

Sheffields gay scene really needs this bar, and from what I have heard the bar was not doing well as a 'straight' bar. At the end of the day the decision will have been a financial one. Have you seen how big the pink pound is? Massive.

The bar was doing fine, but the previous landlord also owns another place *and* the council couldn't offer an accurate timeline for how long before the place was knocked down in the new retail quarter development. It could have been anything between a year and ten years. It makes it hard to create a business plan and work out your future on that sort of information.

hey guys, i checked out this new venue.. the lions lair!! :D

It felt a little different to Dempseys, the atmopshere was great and the people friendly. Only negative was that its a rather small establishment with little seating. I noted that everyone congregated around the bar, so it was impossible to find the bar, and buy a drink. Altho it was nice brushing past and mingling with cuties.. fun.

i really find it hard to believe someone would buy a business knowing that it will be demolished, unless they are renting it on a short lease ..maybe to see how successful a pre-bar would be in sheffield. ( altho if they just look at how successful Dempseys as been that should give them their answer lol)

I love Dempseys from the bottom of my heart, and think its been agreat place over the years, but its missing something.. sex appeal :hihi:

We really need some trendy gay pubs in sheffield to draw in sexy people from the bigger cities..we need a reason for people to visit. Fuel is a great start, but is it enough?

Could sheffields gay nation lol try and organise some other events locally..to promote the gay scene.

Problem with the Pubs and Clubs, its basically a pulling ground, for the youngsters, where do us mature men go to meet friends and chat over white wine and nibbles?

I prefer red ;) , but I do see your point, its a shame Xes is so far out of town and doesnt open until 8pm, as this would be ideal, but somewhere in town, so we dont have far to crawl into Fuel.

I have always said if I win the lottery I am gonna open several gay pubs, (havent won it yet), if dempseys had a lick of paint and better seats downstairs it would be much better, but that means spending money.

But at least we are moving in the right direction, I am sure the next 6 months will be an interesting one in Sheffield for us

From looking at the plans on the councils online planning website the Lions Lair does indeed look like it is smack bang in the demolition zone. I will be very surprised if the building survives, doubt that it is listed.

New Retail Quarter demolition Zone (http://planningdocs.sheffield.gov.uk/WAM/doc/Page-4?extension=.pdf&page=4&wmTransparency=0&id=81195&wmLocation=0&location=VOLUME1&contentType=application%2Fpdf&wmName=&pageCount=15)

The aim is for construction of the NRQ to begin next year, with the first retail buildings, including the new John Lewis department store and the car park, to be completed in 2010.

im happy that Club Xcess is out of town, it attracts the wrong kind of crowd (my opinion only) Iv only ever been once and it scared me so much  One girl who was obviously under the influences of wacky substances lol was trying to fold an unfoldable chair  unsuccessfully!! She tried to get her friends to help her.. but they was not paying any attention..so she lifted the chair and throw it on top of them. One of the chair legs pocked me in the leg as it fell to the ground :help: So i never returned.

On recently visiting Dempseys, i noticed they have revamped their chairs downstairs. Its looking a little more cosy.. just needs a HUGE glitter ball and SEXY dancers (topless)

Climax is soo amazing, even Fuel cant compete with the event... Its a great venue with lots of space, brillient music and lots of students :hihi: I always have a gooood night

According to that, its in the demolition area, but that doesnt mean it will be demolished, such as the front of pinstone st where somerfield is is also within that area, but that wont be demolished if you look at the key correctly.

Doing so, also shows the corner of where burgess st is, a large red sq (which lions lair is in) is classed as listed.

I think you're reading the plans incorrectly, the key for the front of Pinstone St is identified as listed and will under go remedial works & changes only to incorporate the buildings into the New Retail Quarter.

On these plans the Lions Lair is not listed and is marked for demolition.

when did the Lion's Lair behind John Lewis turn into a gay cafe/bar? it always used to be a cool little gastropub....i'm sure it's a great bar still, and the food is good, but not a patch on what it used to be.

anybody know?

Just thought I'd put another post on here, after my one from January. We went into the Lion's Lair again on Friday night, before going to Fuel and I've got to say the place was so much better than our first visit around Christmas. They've given it a lick of paint and spruced it all up a bit. There was a good crowd in aswell, making it a good atmosphere. Will definitely give it another visit....
Does anyone know if they do food?

I was just passing by Lion's Lair this evening, when I noticed that it seemed to not be open, and no lights were on.
I immediately spotted a notice in the window saying to the effect: As of the 1st of January, Lion's Lair is now shut. Please use Affinity Bar.
Lion's Lair and Affinity are, of course, run by the same company, and I suppose unless they still have money to burn, the closure of Lion's Lair and concentrating effort on Affinity makes sound business sense...

Still, I miss the Lion, for the following reasons:
Nice, clean and well furnished bar,
The Jukebox,
The sandwiches that they sold at the bar,
The beer garden (great for smokers and in the summertime).

Of course, Affinity has or will have (In the case of food), all of the above, with the exception of the Beer Garden; as a result smokers, at least at this time of year, have no other choice but to brave the cold and sleet outside the front door...

As of speaking, the ONLY 'Gay' venue with an outdoor smoking area within the premises is CLUB XES, which has a very nice beer-garden with a heater (although it can still be cold in winter). You can also buy food from the chip van which parks outside, and take it into the beer garden and eat it (You can't eat it in the club).

I'm looking forward to when Affinity does its own food...

You are all welcome to use this thread for more information about Lion's Lair, possible redevelopment of the site, or possible new tenants of the premises, although I expect my above blog has covered most of what has to be said.

The Lion is dead! Long Live The Lion!!!:(

Old news dear.

Fuel now has Affinity so no point having 2 pubs.

There is a Lions Lair thread somewhere, I shall go dig it out.

Here is the thread, might be nice reading now.

Thanks for merging the threads; I was wondering where my new thread on the subject had gone!

It was indeed a surprise to hear that the Lion's Lair had shut so suddenly on new year's day, as I had been hearing only last night about such and such staff at Affinity/Lion's Lair, and how they are doing, and that some of them were 'working at Lion's Lair and others at Affinity'
As I mentioned before, I'm not surprised that the Lion had to shut eventually, but it was definitely a quality venue -at least Affinity is similarly good-quality. i suppose I can be excused for my ignorance on the Lion shutting, as I had been abroad doing drag cabaret and TV shows for the last two weeks...

I'm still mourning the loss of it being the Yorkshireman. I used to like the fact that no matter how drunk you were, you wouldn't fall down because your shoes were stuck to the carpet. Class.

Not in the last 9 months of its life though. I ran it then and it was kept clean!

Well said; Did you mean you ran it for the last 9 months of it under the Lions Lair name, or the Yorkshireman?

Perhaps we could hold a mock funeral in Sheffield Cemetery, for what I always thought was a great bar!

Admin, could you change the name of the thread to something more appropriate than 'New Gay Bar ...Lions Lair', as it is unlikely to open if it is being knocked down. Just renaming the thread 'Lion's Lair' will do fine...

I ran it in the last 9 months when it was the Yorkshireman. It was a sad day for us rockers when the brewery took it back and refurbed it into a wine bar.

Was a shame when it sceased being the Yorkie.

If you google on the web then you'll find some Council stuff about compulsory purchase orders.

Looking at this thread it's been on a rocky road for some time. I only discovered it myself earlier this summer, but now it seems to have closed (again?). Where does one go for a women-friendly gay pub in the city centre now??? Any suggestions?
