My vote is Fagan's on Broad Lane.

Problem here is that if I post the name of the best pub in Sheffield on this or any other site people would be tempted to go and have a look. One of the main attractions of this pub is that it's a local pub for local people.

Depends on what type of pub of course.
If it caters for kids then Brewsters is the best in Sheffield as it has an internal play area and the meals are good and reasonably priced.
The down side is the staff are not as welcoming as the pub which is a shame because some, not all spoil a nice place.
A good long custumer care course would do them good.

For a proper pub, you can't beat the Porter Cottage on Sharrowvale Road.

Classic Rock

Classic Rock Bar on Ecclesall Road! I run it with Sass!

Cheap ale, live music, constant entertainment, good quality cheap food, beer garden, very friendly staff.....

I don't go to too many pubs, but I like the Swim Inn on West Street, mainly because it's cheap

I would vote for the new Barracks Tavern (after the Classic Rock bar of course)

For city centre pubs I'd vote either the Howard or the one near the Town Hall that's going to be demolished soon to make way for a car park.

Locally, the Robin Hood on Greaves Lane or the Crown and Glove (aka Top House) on Uppergate Road have been regular watering holes of mine for years, especially the Robin Hood back in my student days.

outta town its always the east house or the rock for me, but they are rather deliciously local and easy to fall home from when pished...

At this moment it's the Cremorne Hotel on London Road. I'm there at the moment having been driven to drink by people on the 'Hathersage wind farm' thread.

Cheers!!

The Rose and Crown (Wadsley Village) and the Rivelin Hotel are nice cosy pubs.

Downtown, not the best pub, but one of the best for a 'first pint' or to meet up is the Bankers Draft.

The Devonshire Cat has some interesting Ales - changed frequently.

The White Lion in Heeley - It's a great pub for playing pool, watching the footy and seeing bands (not much room for the audience though)

for sheer character of the customers its got to be "Hen and Chickens" on Castle Green, also lots of great bargains to be had..

The Rivelin at the top of the hill off Rivelin valley road? If so, yes - I like the place. Have you noticed the amount of clocks? Last time I went there the each clock chimed on the hour at different times... :D

why not compile a list of the best pubs in each area so if your there you know where to go?

Best place in:

London rd area. The Vine. Cemetery rd

Eccesall rd area. CRB. Eccesall rd

City Centre. Cubanna. Trippet Lane

Walkley. The Blake. Blake St

Broomhill. Getting worse, Its all a scream so pick one. Wheres the independents when u need em?

Crookes. Goto Walkley

Upperthorpe. Go Up the hill to Walkley or to Fat Cat.

Netherthorpe. Star And Garter.

West Street. Red House (I think thats the name red something, off mapin st.)

Devonshire quarter. Devonshire Cat.

Anyone like to add some?

From previous thread

For uperthorpe you can't beat the Meadow on a weekend. It's a lively little pub and you are garanteed to have a 'different' kind of night every time.

Sportsman for that old pub feeling...

The Red Deer, I think you mean. Having said that The Red House is equally good and is on Solly Street just the other side of Brookhill from St George's church and down a bit. Netherthorpe really.

I'd say The Princess Royal, while being in Steel Bank, is closer to Crookes than Walkley. Unless you mean The Royal which is also a good pub and is in Walkley.

I guess for Broomhill I would say the Place aint bad.

Closer to home, in Bradway the overall best is the Castle Inn, however the Old Mother Red Cap deserves a mention as it's so stupidly cheap (£1.18 a pint for Sam Smith's Old Brewery bitter).

In Crookes the Cobden View is quite a good pub.

Heeley - The White Lion.

Attercliffe - The Cocked Hat

I think you're probably right. I'm not sure where the dividing line is.
Yeah The Royal is OK as is The Freedom, The Walkley Cottage, and The Sportsman. So if your thinking of going drinking in Crookes don't bother. Go to Walkley instead - lots of nice pubs in Walkley. Is The Palm still there?

Yes thes Porter Cottage is a good one for atmosphere and juke box, even though they sell flat beer, don`t really dig land lady either.

Devonshire Cat is certainly worth checking out for the range of ales and friendly funky staff.

Must mention Brown Bear, customers are not of this world, not surprising because of the loopy juice they have on tap. This place needs to be visited. :loopy:

Hillsborough - either the Malin Bridge or the Blue Bowl on Bradfield Road.

Stannington - Hare & Hounds, Minnie's (Rose & Crown) or the Top House (Crown & Glove)

Loxley: Admiral Rodney (They do great Pub meals there, except on Sundays cos they don't do Scampi on Sundays)

Worral: Shoulder of Mutton (Good meals)

Wadsley: The Beehive, Wadsley Jack, Sportsman, Dial House

Anyone rmember the Red Lion at Heeley before they gutted it and turned it into a "sports Bar"- cracking place.

What about the Sportsman at Wadsley when mad Mulvaney was landlord- you could drink in there regardless of what age you were because he was always slaughtered!

Happy Days!!!!

It's basically been untouched since I started drinking there about 25 years ago. It's a family pub where there's never any trouble (You're not going to start anything if your gran's sitting in the corner, are you?), Good beer, flexible licensing hours. Unfortunately I don't get in there much since I moved to Walkley.

And now a sensible post for a change, which is quite good coming from me:-

Dog n Partridge

Grapes

Red Deer

Washington

Fagans

Fat Cat

In no particular order (except for the Dog) and all within range of a decent pub crawl, apart from the Fat Cat of course!

Does anyone know for sure if the New Barrack Tavern at Hillsborough is still owned by the same people as the Sheaf View at/near Heeley?

I seem to remember seeing it mentioned a while ago on here, but no-one was sure.

But I love the Sheaf View - great beer, great atmosphere (comfortable and unpretentious).

I think it depends what you want at that particular time.

I agree that The Empire Bar is good because it can get full of pretty girls. However, it is also far too noisy and smokey. What a pitty you can't get the girls without the loud music and smoke.

A different type of pub which I like is The Dore Moor Inn. They have a large non-smoking area and serve good food. On the downside it is quite expensive and not all that convenient by bus.

Is it just me or did the Fat Cat used to be a lot better? Maybe I was more naive, I have to say I think it's overrated these days.

Anyway, to echo most of the sentiments already expressed:

Devy Cat is definately a favourite of mine (it's not the cheapest beer but it always seems to get me far drunker than beer from everywhere else, and an unrivaled selection of beers, lagers and ciders.)

Kelham Island.

Gardeners' Rest.

That pink one near the Skoda Garage (I can never remember it's name.)

And, if you happen to be in Commonside, the Springvale is very nice.

Depends what you look for in a pub though don't it?

What more could you want in a pub?

A bit of music would be nice also a good atmosphere helps.

I suppose this thread proves that eveyone has different tastes in pubs but for me the Bankers Draft has to be one of the worst examples of a pub I have ever been in,infact the only pub I like less is the Weatherspoons oppisite coles which is even worse.

The Birley Hotel is the best.. of a bad bunch.

Mind you, the Noahs Ark at Intake has come on leaps and bounds of late. Trouble is the Friday night pub singers.. not bad, just too damn loud (and that from a rock fan too LOL). Magnet is good too.

Its all very well having it refurbished, but if they barr everyone that they don't like the 'look' of, it's pointless.

The Cricket Inn, Totley - great food, good beer. Cosy in the winter with open fire and great in the summer for games and beer on the cricket pitch.

I remember it when it was a very good local pub, it can't now be described as being a pub, this is a restaurant.

Give it 6 months and The Blake will be up there amongst the best......it's only been opened 2 weeks and it's already in the top 10 Sheffield pubs.

Went in The Harlequin last night...another top class pub with great beer at decent prices.

Yes thes Porter Cottage is a good one for atmosphere and juke box, even though they sell flat beer, don`t really dig land lady either.

I have completely gone off the Porter Cottage since the land lady tried to throw out my friends the moment they walked in for being overly jolly (she claimed drunk- they'd had 1 pint previously).

Otherwise-
The Lescar (Sharrowvale Road)
The Sheaf (new favourite- off Chesterfield Road)
The Rutland Arms (city centre)
Sheffield Tap (Train station)
The Fat Cat (Kelham Island)
The Washington

having just re-read this thread one thing is evident. Sheffield has a lot of numpties who wouldnt know a good pub if they walked in one, and dont give me that its all a matter of taste crap - it isnt, i wouldnt drink in most of the pubs mentioned on here if they paid me to drink their swill

I think this thread shows that people have extremely differing views of what a pub is (ie some one said the Swan Inn is a good pub- no it's a Weatherspoons not a pub). Guess thats down to age, taste etc.

Define what makes a good pub....?

The Sheaf View, Heeley is by far the best pub in sheffield.
Not one Commercialised mass produced or American larger on sale. Just good beer !!

Good choice. A lot of the best things about Kelham Island pubs but with more locals and less tickers.

2 other pubs I would mention are the Wellington and the Sheffield Tap.

The Hadfield is my favourite, followed by The Nelson.

Got to be Bankers Draft because of all the interesting characters you meet in there. Was in there on Saturday night and made a new friend called "slasher Bob". He's a bit eccentric and likes to draw attention to himself by stabbing his neck with a carving fork. He talks for ages about the history of his bowel movements and I was a bit thrown off balance when he told me he worked hard in the market but always skipped work once a year to commemorate the Yorkshire Ripper's birthday. I'm beginning to wish I didn't invite him round for Christmas dinner now. - no, seriously, Princess Royal, Slinn Street Crookes. The new management have made a real go of it and have a friendly crowd most nights.
