View Full Version : 1980's Nostalgia: What Would You Like to Forget?
Last week, an old friend from school sent me a film clip taken on a school outing in about 1986. There I was, dodgy perm, questionable dress sense and appaling white hoop earings.
I also seem to recall I had a strange fondness for cerise coloured clothing, yellow shoes, Wham and Aha. I even saw a couple of people on that clip who brought back a few memories that I might want to modify :hihi: .
What did you do, wear or listen to in the 80's that are probably best forgotten?
StarSparkle 20-12-2005, 17:18 To answer your question, I'd like to forget the 1980s! :D

HappyHoosier 20-12-2005, 17:33 The '80s were not my proudest decade fashion-wise....
I had a couple of sweatshirts with the sleeves and neckline cut out... a la Jennifer Beals in "Flashdance."
I also wore red Converse high-tops, pink mid-heel pumps, a Dressed-for-Success blouse with a silk bow at the collar, corduroy gaucho pants and Western boots, several velour shirts and --- oh, no! -- a set of leg warmers.

<Gumph> Who could have done such a thing?
The 'Atkinson's Farah Stay-prest and Gino Capelli Trouser/Sweater combo' has me waking up in a cold sweat now and again.

Melthebel: Yes, I am female... that still doesn't excuse the legwarmers!
I would like to forget the fact that I was already in my 30's as the 80's began.
Please pass the Phylosan.
: :( :(
MysTique 20-12-2005, 20:38 Ahh the 80's - my decade
There's some great memories on This thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52458) too.

Crikey, you've got three decades on me; no wonder you're always in a foul mood.
I rather liked the 1980s - I loved being at primary school and middle school.
Music wise, we had the likes of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Wham...
On the TV, we had Knight Rider, Dallas, Dynasty, and great kids programmes such as Terrahawks and Star Fleet.
We had great toys, such as Transformers, Mask, and decent Scalextric sets.
Quite simply, the best decade ever
I think the 80's was the worst decade for music. Give me the 70's anyday.

Eh? That's a bit harsh :|
OK, so Bros appeared towards the latter end of the decade, and Stock, Aitken and Waterman probably spoiled most of the entire decade and part of the 90s too, but the 80s did have some fantastic new romantic bands.
No, sorry - Never got into that new romantic stuff although my older brother and younger sister did.
The 80s had some of the best Children's TV ever made IMHO, stuff like Trumpton, Chigley and Camberwick Green (I want to buy the complete box set of all 3 but Mum won't let me), not to mention stuff like Pigeon Street, Fingermouse, The Flumps etc.. Also the Muppet Show rocked!
As for 80s music, sure some of it was dodgy, but no more or less so than some of the crap that fills the pop charts nowadays, no Crazy Frog for a start, although we did have daft comedy tracks like Star Trekkin' and the Spitting Image Chicken song, and don't even get me started on the likes of the Birdy song and those songs with ridiculous dances like Agadoo et al.
Don_Kiddick 20-12-2005, 21:11 Errrr.... I've forgotten
Roughly translated, doesn't 'some daft comedy tracks' mean 'CRAP'?

Nothing wrong with Duran Duran ;-)
Actually, I'm a cross 70's/80's person really. Most of my favourite bands/songs come from 1979 and 1980. The Jam, Blondie, The police to name but a few. Never followed the fashion side of the music though :gag:
70's - Remember boob tubes? ;)

To be honest, in their day I didn't think stuff like Star Trekkin was that bad, the video to it was hilarious... I just hated all those dodgy dance tracks like the Birdie song, Agadoo etc that get dragged out at every Party I've ever been to, even that "I am the music man...." one never fails to get played, people actually get up to it as well, and know all the dances to it :loopy:
Go on Rich admit it even you do don't you? when you've had one pint too many.
What about 'oops upside your head'. They were even doing it at my son's 18th and he wasn't even born when it came out.
I thought 80's music pretty abysmal compared to the 60's and 70's. The least said about Wham the better.
My generation saw the birth of the Stones, The Who et al.
Pure magic!!!

You have a point, I suppose.
The late 80s saw the start of dance, house, trance, aciiieeed, whatever you want to call it, and we're still paying the price for its commercial success today
Bloody junkies
czechroman 20-12-2005, 21:37 i dont know what to forget, but i dont want to forget the hole in road, as mentioned in other threads, brings back memories when i see pics, i often wish we could relive some of the old times!:D

Ah yes, the unofficial boys' school uniform. I had thought that I was fairly well-dressed in the 80s, but looking back... dear God, the horror.
I don't think the music was too bad though. Just think how popular the 80s best-of albums are. Ok, so Wham were a bit duff, but some of the stuff are classics. VH1 would be on for about ten minutes a day if it wasn't for the 80s. Oh, and the Chicken Song was fantastic!
FairyNormal 20-12-2005, 23:14 One word to make my street cred go right down the pan ........
Kajagoogoo!!
*shudders at the thought*

I loved the 80s!!!!!
I wouldnt wanna forget anything that happend! (Maybe the space shuttle disaster (Shouldnt have happenend))
I think the 80's was the worst decade for music. Give me the 70's anyday. You gotta be kidding mate,80s music WAS THE BEST!!
Actually i love 60s thru 80s (80s being the best) the best..
The Muppets and Flumps were from the Seventies - either that or I fell through a time warp
And Trumpton, Chigley and Camberwick Green were all old when I was watching them in the mid seventies
Can't deny they are some of the best childrens TV programmes though
auto98uk 22-09-2010, 16:33 1980'S best decade for just about everything.
I see some people talking about wham and duran duran, what about the soul music, rock, classic rock, soft rock, metal, punk, ska, pop ect ect. tv/ film was at it's best also.
the fashion was fun and so was the haircuts, now everyone has just about the same normal fashion thing going on, nobody has the fun dressing as the 70's/80's.
anyway im only 23 so what do i know about the full decade? just the clips i see on the tele, lol.
Even rap music had some decent stuff, before it became all gangster. (Though i suppose the greatest of them all was very late 80's & early 90's - Public Enemy)

It's gotta be Thatcher, the evil witch.
The sodding A Team
Bloody magnum PI
I got their crappy DVD boxsets .... how sad am I?
Harleyman 22-09-2010, 20:10 VCRs, cassette tapes and audio tapes. All of of them crap.
Bought my first VCR in 1982 and paid a lot of money for it. The tape would get caught in the machine after pushing the eject button and it would take a lot of fiddling around to get it out with breaking the tape. The recorded picture quality was second rate and they had a tendency to jitter up and down during playback.
The audio cassette tapes were garbage also. They would suddenly switch sides during play in the car cassette deck and sometimes the sound was distorted.
Good riddance to both of em.
teapots2010 22-09-2010, 20:19 Margaret Thatcher :gag:
Yup! Me too!:gag::gag:

Totally agree - the 1980's will forever be remembered for the joke that was the Thatcher government.

Spot on my old friend
How is The Gaffer doing these days?
Not half as big a joke as the useless idiots we have just got rid of after 13 years .
How old were you when the last Tory government was in office?
With a comment such as this, I doubt that you were old enough to remember how the Tories devastated this country. You are about to find out!
<Gumph> Who could have done such a thing?
The 'Atkinson's Farah Stay-prest and Gino Capelli Trouser/Sweater combo' has me waking up in a cold sweat now and again.
Nothing wrong with the John Anthony sta-press from Harringtons in the market. Them were the days....along with Smart r's jeans from Jeanery!
VCRs, cassette tapes and audio tapes. All of of them crap.WoW!!!
I love my VCR and my cassette tapes (If they break i usually try to repair them)
Analogue is SO MUCH BETTER than digital as far as audio goes!!

tortus shell NHS glasses - mine had a piece of rubber tubing holding the arm together after the school bully tried correcting my eyesight lol.
Two tone red or brown tank tops mother made from reclaimed wool.
cast off clothes from next door neighbours or off mothers church friends. The embarrassment of wearing 70s cloths in the 80s.
Mullet poodle perms the girls had at school
Dad mixing different coloured paint to make it go further. Yeps this was to cover the £Wood Chip on the Walls".
Choppers and BMX's
Ford escorts with CB aerials.

All the best girls came from St Maries
After 13 years of Phoney Blair and Gordon Clown anything is an improvment.
I doubt you can remember the last Tory Govt. 'er fiasco. Thatcher was carted off to the loony bin and all her evil fascist ministers vanished. 17% mortgage rates, South Yorks and other industrial areas devastated, there was no end to the carnage they caused. When a recession is in the north, then nobody cares, but when it affects London, the city banks etc then it is front page news. I remember every Govt since the 'Suez' crisis and apart from Ted Heath all the Tories have been inhuman monsters.
I think the 80's was the worst decade for music. Give me the 70's anyday.
LOL at 70's music being any good. It was only 78, 79 that started to see some sign of decent music.
The 80's had soul, rock, pop mixed with fashion and good tv.
The best decade for music for me are as follows...
50's
80's
60's
70's
early 90's
The 80s had some of the best Children's TV ever made IMHO, stuff like Trumpton, Chigley and Camberwick Green (I want to buy the complete box set of all 3 but Mum won't let me), not to mention stuff like Pigeon Street, Fingermouse, The Flumps etc.. Also the Muppet Show rocked!

Every decade has had it's pap music to be fair.
I thought 80's music pretty abysmal compared to the 60's and 70's. The least said about Wham the better.

Is that all you remember in the 80's, wham? There was the police, the jam, the cure, simple minds, not forgetting some great metal bands, soul artist and the likes of michael jackson, prince ect.
