View Full Version : Single sex schools - are they a good idea?
I can't speak from experience as I went to a mixed comprehensive but I don't think that single sex schools are a good idea.
Girls tend to mature earlier than boys and so take their school work (in the main) more seriously from an earlier age therefore it might make sense to educate them separately.
Also there is the distraction factor of mixing the sexes where flirting and snogging behind the bike shed might be more appealing than algebra and chemistry.
On the other hand single sex education provides such an artifical environment for learning. I wonder if it is moe difficult to form relationships with members of the opposite sex if you have been in a single sex school. Anybody any experience of this?
as a 14 yr old in a mixed school
i dont think single sex schools are a good idea. because as you say it is an artifitial environment.
because some ladies get on better with guys than girls. and vicer versa
plus it doensnt give chiildren as much chance to explore their sexual preferences! hehe a naughty word :wow:   :surprised
thenewborn 03-03-2004, 13:34 Definately a bad idea, i never did, and i turned out terrible, so if i was in a single sex school i would have came out even worse
At 11 I had the choice of girls school or mixed. I choose mixed, mainly because I get on better with blokes a lot of the time. My mum often comments that if I'd have gone to the girls school, I probably would have ended up being expelled!! Girls are sooo bitchy in that environment and I'm too tomboy like to be all girly.
My brother went to the all boys school and i think it effected him a bit with relationships later in life.
I have girlfriends who went to the all girls school and basically for a long time they acted all giggly round boys and didn't know how to act. Me getting on with boys and men always seemed normal to me. At times I wanted to slap the girls who went to the all girls school as they were sooooo childish when boys were around!
I say society is mixed so why not have mixed schools!
Agent Dan 04-03-2004, 11:27 I went to an all boys school and it was f-ing terrible. Gives you all sorts of problems during puberty and is also a very unrealistic way of preparing you for real life. Needless to say I left when I was 16 to go to a college, where I spent 2 years 'catching up' *cough* and did very little work...!!

No, statistics tell us that you're far more likely to be buggered at an all boys public school. Or one run by catholic priests
:D
*Twinkle* 04-03-2004, 15:59 I went to a mixed school and I did GNVQ science which was split into single sex classes... The amount of bitching that went off in there... lol! Everyone used to get so nasty and it was so strange!! Then we went back to classes with boys and everyone was less bitchy!
I hope you are all paying attention
Cue a drum roll
................I agree with Mo on this
(On the face of it one thinks there might be good reasons for single sex schools - especially for clever pupils who seem to do educationally okay out of it - but a bit of research shows that it does more harm than good in terms of becoming a fully paid up member of the human race later on)
And I am still laughing at mojoworking's joke

i think that is why we are in mixed classes this year for that! actually when i say mixed there are about 5 girls and the rest are boys in our class but it would drive me mad in a single sex class never mind school, its bitchy enough with half girls half boys!!!
but now i think about it our GCSE dance class is all girls and everyone is ok in there, but we are not sat in a classroom all lesson together!
