Only cause thats my home team as im from belfast. i was at the match on thursday at the odyssey in belfast were the steelers were palying and i must admitt they were crap and got stuffed 4-1. You may be good at producing steel but are completely crap at ice hockey nice1charlie 28-12-2005, 22:24 i went to the steelers match on boxing day where they played the nott'ham panthers - im a steelers fan but have to b honest in syaing that they were out played - nottingham were the much better side and deserved the win - when steelers passed the puck they passed it to a panthers player - their goalkeeper was huge as well so that didnt help!!! ive been to about half a dozen games and that was the first one they had lost - brilliant to have a good crowd tho it was packed. how come everyone comes out when its the holidays? its the same with football matches!! i dont suppose anyone could alos help me in finding out the rules to ice hockey as some of the things ive seen im quite surprised at and so would help to understand the game a bit more! thanks hockeybear 29-12-2005, 09:36 http://www.usahockey.com/dubuque_youth_hockey/main_site/main/hockey___the_g// ice hockey rules not the exact same rules as used in the Elite league but it will give you the rough idea syko1979 29-12-2005, 12:51 Hello. I'm not into ice hockey but i always keep an eye out for their results. What's gone wrong? Steelers used to be the best by a mile!! nice1charlie 29-12-2005, 17:09 thanks hockey bear - i'll have a look at that - i bet its not some light bedtime reading though is it? lol im not sure whats wrong with the steelers recently - they are about mid table and the games ive been to see so far - they havent been brilliant the other side has always played well (except maybe the london racers - they were poor!) but i think its just a case of they need better attack - thats my opinion anyway - i wouldnt like to say much more until i hvase seen more games because like i said ive only been to about half a dozen games so far! but i'll try and keep u informed!!! buck 29-12-2005, 17:35 My team is the Montreal Canadiens, always were and always will be, 23 times Stanley Cup champions. They have been through some tough years recently, but are on the way back. The most beautiful sound in the world, 16,000 cheering fans in the old forum. These are fans who will cheer a great play from an opposing team. When was the last time a footie crowd did that. buck 29-12-2005, 17:38 By the way, ice hockey is known over here as just hockey. That other game played in short skirts is known as field hockey. We have our priorities right. hockeybear 29-12-2005, 20:52 Nice1Charlie, the probs are not forwards, it is defence, we don't have one, the forwards are having to do both jobs. Buck I bet 16000 fans sound awsome we get around 3-4000, 5000 for a Sheffield- Nottingham game. barnie41 29-12-2005, 22:54 Hockeybear - crowds of 7000 - would that be the game where they gave out loads of free tickets, and yes I was one of them. It was like watching paint dry my friend - no atmosphere - unless you count half a dozen 12 yr olds doing a dance evry now and then. They tried to impress and failed I'm afraid. buck 30-12-2005, 03:35 The Panthers were a pro team right from the end of WW11, made up of a bunch of Canadian ex servicemen who didn't go home, along with the Brighton Tigers and a few other teams. Sheffield didn't have any ice at the time. The Canadian/American National Hockey league had only 6 teams at that time, and the competition was fierce and merciless. Nobody wore helmets nor did goalies wear face masks. It was great fun. Now everybody is protected, and rightly so and I think the last count waS 24 TEAMS. but the game isn't as interesting as it was. kirky 30-12-2005, 10:00 Originally posted by buck The Panthers were a pro team right from the end of WW11, made up of a bunch of Canadian ex servicemen who didn't go home, along with the Brighton Tigers and a few other teams. I don't agree with the free tickets, but good on ya for trying a new sport, if you don't like it fair enough. barnie41 30-12-2005, 17:54 Wish I was a student, well past all that - it was a corporate freebie if you like. Been to the odd game over the years, but its never got me going at all. kirky 07-01-2006, 17:36 Originally posted by barnie41 Wish I was a student, well past all that - it was a corporate freebie if you like. The players were very approachable, and not forgetting Alex Dampier and Clyde Tuyl who worked there socks off for the team, the 7000 crowd was the norm, and the excitement when they played the panthers and the extra seating was put in, it truly were "The Steelers family". I think the Steelers could easily have got over the Darren Brown time, but the knife went in when Norton Lee took over, the very people that hated the thought of him taking over, suddenly had a change of heart and then he was the greatest thing since sliced bread, one week there was a meeting in the Arena grounds and the powers that be were demanding that he would be bad for the club, then they had a change of heart and the fans were told he'd be good for the club, well it was to prove wrong, suddenly people lost heart with the decisions that were made, no one man could be bigger than the club, because that became it's downfall, and now the club is reaping what was sown, players were important and they didn't always feel that they were, the back room staff were the same.Whatever the Steelers had was magic at that time, and I wouldn't swap my memories for the Stanley Cup, but I think they killed the goose that layed the golden egg, and I wish the fans that still go now could regain that Family feeling. hockeybear 07-01-2006, 22:08 Applegrim, I agree with every word you said, but things change. We now have the best off ice team we have ever had. Simmsy is trying his best to keep the family thing going and on days like today when we beat the Panthers in their own barn it is still there. We will not see the likes of king Kenny again because it is no longer a cheque book team, and I for one think that is good for British ice hockey. Back in the ISL players like Farrand and Duncome couldn't hope to get in their home town team and the future of ice hockey in this country has to be to bring the Brits on. O.K. this year is not good ,what with the lack of imports (yes we still need them)and injuries, but with the off ice team we have the future looks good, very good. Keep the faith and we will be back up there again soon! Lindseyw 07-01-2006, 22:26 I know nothing about Ice Hockey, but one of the steelers lives next door to me !! mummybear 07-01-2006, 22:40 Originally posted by Lindseyw I know nothing about Ice Hockey, but one of the steelers lives next door to me !! Who's that then? Ask 'em for a free ticket and come and sit with me - our block's not usually full. Applegrim 07-01-2006, 22:43 Hockeybear, the saying keep the faith springs to mind, I lost mine about four years ago, I wouldn't trust a soul down there, Simmsy could stand on his head and blow a bugle for all I care, but people don't forget, there's been a lot of easy come easy go, without a jot of feeling, Simmsy once said to us when asked about Marti Makay that the players are just pieces of meat, well thats just what stood the Steelers apart from the rest, you don't call the family "pieces of meat", and once players feel like that they're forced to come on out with their heads down. Our players were proud, they were the tops, but there got to be an underlying feeling that things weren't right, the're wasn't the easy smiles anymore, and before you say that hockey isn't about smiles etc., well we all know that, but hockey would never have got of the ground at all here without all this good feeling and once everyone felt good, they went out on the ice and did the business, and no one could touch us, the inner happiness was just like having an extra player playing for us, do you remember the Tommy, Cranny, and Millie line up, well although they had some skill, it was the adreneline and the fan worship that got most of their goals, Cranny was like a dog with two tails when he slid along the ice, If you ever see this happen again let me know, I would love to know that feeling had come back. Lindseyw 07-01-2006, 22:45 Originally posted by mummybear Who's that then? Ask 'em for a free ticket and come and sit with me - our block's not usually full. Dunno - his names Ron and his little 'un plays with mine :) hockeybear 07-01-2006, 22:58 Applegrim, the players are journeymen, they go where the wages are, always did, always will. That is my point about bringing on the Brits. Come April the Sheffield Steelers exists in name only. The imports will follow the money, except rocket of course. mummybear 07-01-2006, 23:01 Originally posted by Lindseyw Dunno - his names Ron and his little 'un plays with mine :) That would be Cole (he plays ice hockey too!). Dad is the ledgendary Ron Shudra - the nicest bloke in ice hockey and a Steeler through and through. Lucky you - my neighbours are well boring! Applegrim 08-01-2006, 14:56 well HockeybearI have enough sense to know that the players aren't coming here for the personalities of the management, thats excluding the present mangement of course, but you will never convince me that they weren't swayed slightly by all the adoration each and everyone received here, and most didn't follow the money, I think the majority stayed till they were too old to move on, then they tried there hand at coaching, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's a shame that the party seems to be over, and I have very happy memories of how it used to be, so thanks to Ron,Steve,Cranny, Tommy,Chris noy forgetting Ken who I might add signed his book for me the night he retired, but wrote inside "see you next year" I knew of course he wouldn't, but he knew it wasn't what we wanted to hear so he didn't want to disappoint us,but you were talking about the Brits, were is lobby? I wish you well in the future. hockeybear 08-01-2006, 18:51 Hi again Applegrim, I don't know if you really wanted to know where Lobby is but he is at the Newcastle Vipers, along with another ex Steeler Rob Wilson. When I wrote about bringing on the Brits I thought you might pick me up on that, but I was expecting you to say Tony Hand,Sorry Tony Hand MBE. (who is at Edinburgh). The faith may return to you my friend, keep looking for the results, I have to keep believing the good times will return:clap:   Lindseyw 08-01-2006, 19:00 Originally posted by mummybear That would be Cole (he plays ice hockey too!). Cole is indeed the custest little boy you ever did see ! Applegrim 08-01-2006, 19:18 Hockeybear, thanks for the info on Lobby, it has got to be said out of all the Brits he was my favourite, he had a wonderful personality as well as being a good player, I found Tony Hand a little surly but a good player though, don't start me on a where are they now theme, we could be here all night, but I did read Frank was now a police officer back in Canada, don't know about Cranny, but Tommy was teaching back in Canada, they did quite a bit of good for Canada travel, I've been twice but it was the team that made me want to go, I've even sat on the bench of the Toronto Maple Leafs, thanks for the memories. |
