I passed my 11+ to go to Owler Lane Intermediate school back in 1960, and in 1963 we joined up with Hinde House Secondary school to make, I think, the first Comprehensive school in Sheffield. Does anyone on the forum remember going there at that time?

I didn't go towler lane but went to hinde House untill 1966 so I was propably there at the same time as you only I didn't pass the eleven plus so you were probably in a higher class than me

It's been great to read the names from the past on this site. Tony Oxley, Ian Pringle, the famous Greatbatch, Steve Radford. Whatever happened to Geoff Worth? I thought he'd make it as a pro footballer.Does the name Roger Sidwell ring a bell, his folks had a pub in Pitsmoor, also Eddie Lister, lived on the Manor estate along with me. By the way, my name is Brian Moss. Another name I remember is Fred Guite, but sadly, I think he topped himself a few years ago, but I'd love to be wrong.

I remember some of those names, sadly you are right Fred did take his own life. I remember Roger I lived a few yards from him at one time and I think Geoff Worth did become a professional footballer he was certainly a professional coach. I remember you but I think you were one year below me.

Hi Geoff Worth here. Good to see all the old names again.Yes I did play in Pro football with the Owls as a youngster then with Barnsley and Lincoln. All not very successfully mind. Graham Taylor set me on as Youth Team Coach at Lincoln and I coached under George Kerr, Willie Bell and Colin Murphy at Lincoln also being in charge of the Reserves. I then moved to Derby County where I stayed for a few years before going back to my Sheffield business and taking over Alfreton Town and later Buxton. All not very exciting I'm affraid. I am currently in the USA where I have started a company connected to the Uk set up which is now in it's 39th year. Strewth! and I'm only 39
I am not quite sure who I am replying to, but if it is you Brian, I remember you being a good inside forward even though you were a Blades fan.

It was Mick Heap and he followed Ralph. Although I think Mick started with us at Hinde House. Ralph got the sack if you remember when we were still at Owler Lane for touring with Wednesday to Nigeria I think. What a good memory you have, although Ralph left me some memorabilia from Nigeria it was Peter Swan who gave me an England Shirt. That was the closest I was ever going to come to one.
I have kept in touch with Ralph over the last few years. He is living in the Potteries. I had a job finding him and I am now upset that because I am in the States, I haven't phoned him since Christmas and I can't seem to get hold of him. Last year when I spoke to him there was a possibility that he may be moving down south but seemed to change his mind. Maybe he did eventually move. I will track him though

I have spoken to Ralph O'Dpnnell a couple of times recently. He has moved with his family to Weymouth and is keeping well. He has many a good story to tell and I love talking to him. Does anybody remember his Geography lessons when we used to leave an Owls programme on the front desk. Not much geography got done then. I remember gong to Burnley for a night match when Ralph was playing and I showed him the prog. the next day at the beginning of his class. Needless to say, we took his mind off the Andes and whatever.

Hi Geoff, wasn't Miss Baldock the maiden name of our beloved Mrs Bermingham? She was our home room teacher for four years and quit teaching soon after.I was always worried that we might have soured her on the teaching profession but apparently this was not the case.I heard that the kids who she got after us were a right set of malicious little thugs and they put her off teaching.I've been rereading this entire thread and,for some reason, some innocuous posts have been removed.A couple of them were about the so-called strike when Mr O Donnell was sacked following his taking time off to go to Africa with Sheffield Wednesday.Give him my best when you next talk to him.He was a great teacher.

I went to owler lane in 1963. I then moved up to Hinde House comprehensive in 1963. Our form room was actually the stage in the hall! I also seem to recall a couple of teachers getting married, but I can't remember their names. I do remember during the big freeze that we were asked by the headmaster if we had an art period on one thursday afternoon. A classmate gave him a copy of our timetable, which indicated that we were there all that afternoon. The head said that as the heating had broken down in the arts class, (it was a sort of prefabricated building in the school yard) we were to be sent home for that afternoon! Most of us went snowballing in the park! But the best thing was that the headmaster had been given the wrong timetable by mistake, but no one let on. I sometimes drive past the old school and it's amazing how small it seems now compared to when we were kids. Was there a teacher called Mr Tizard? the name seems to have stuck for some reason, although he may have been at another school.

Dear All, I'm glad that my initial post a couple of years ago extracted a few names from the past. I haven't been on this site for a while, as I went back to school for around three years, and I remember schoolwork being easier at fifteen than it's been at fifty nine! It's been nice to read Geoff's football memories. I remember the game against St Peters, but the scoreline must have been so traumatic that my memory deleted it. Thanks for reminding me Geoff!!!!!!! I've been in the casino business for around thirty years and three years ago I decided that it was not the career for me. I decided that I was missing my grandkids growing up while I'm off the coast of Georgia most nights and weekends dealing Roulette and Blackjack. Now I hope to be helping people as a physical therapist assistant, instead of relieving people of their hard earned cash. I'm also enjoying my new hip joint after painful osteoarthritis for over twenty years. I can't complain too much as I put my joints through football, martial arts and finished off with a couple of marathons. I must be the most unsuccessful athletic 'wanabe' in history. Well it's time to study for my state board exam so I'll say bye for now. Brian

He asked me if I remembered when we used to do sprints on the street behind Owler Lane. But I said, if it hadn't a ball with it I wouldn't have been there.
Does anyone remember the street or indeed the "sprints".
Brian, you must have done that!!

I have told him he has become even more confused in his later years than when he was when he was teaching. As usual, he takes it in great humour and says he has always been old. I spend an age on the phone with him and could stay on all day. No change there then.

Geoff, I don't remember any windsprints in the street. They must have been, 'secret training sprints' that you won't own up to! (No wonder I could never catch you:rant:) I'm glad that Ralph is enjoying Weymouth. I spent quite a few summers there, working as a barman at the local Pontins Holiday camp at Osmington Bay. I played for the staff six a side football team every Friday afternoon, against whoever had won the campers competition. One week a team of apprentices came down from Leyton Orient FC and we managed to hold them to a 3-3 draw. We weren't allowed to buy a round in the staff bar that weekend:hihi:

Brian, Phil Woodall remembers the "wind sprints". You and must have been wagging it.

Hi Moe Robinson here. Phil put me in touch with this site. I am surprised that he hasn't posted any comments. Sorry I didn't meet up with Glynn and Geoff in the summer but hopefully next year? Give me plenty of notice when you are next in Sheffield Glynn and maybe we can have a big reunion for our sixtieth year.

Very sorry Phil. I was in a hurry to post this message and didn't read all the entries until later. I notice that Geoff was hoping to be back in the UK this month. Did you catch up with him? All the girls are planning a trip next year for our sixtieth birthdays - possibly Barcelona. We shall have to meet up for a mini reunion as I don't have the energy to organise another large scale one.

Hi Phil, Unfortuntely I had another stroke 3 weeks ago. 13 years after the last one. Unlucky for some eh! I'm out of hospital now but flying is out of the question in the forseeable future. It affected my right side this time and as it was my left last time, I'm kinda evened up. I have apparently had a hole in my heart for the past 60 years and will be getting that fixed soon. I knew there was a good reason I didn't play for England and this must be it.
Fishing is not out of the question Phil, but I must make sure you don't have to give me CPR on the bankside. That would probably finih me off !

Welcome Moe and comiserations Geoff.Get well soon. Moe,Don't forget to check out the Hinde House sites. Also the long thread on Mr Edwards,We'd be interested to read any input you might have. Can anybody remember how long the gap was between Pop Gregory retiring and Mr E starting?I'm sure Mr Pashley was in charge for a while. At least it was him who handled the so-called 'strike' when Ralph O'Donnel was sacked.

Another name I remember is Fred Guite, but sadly, I think he topped himself a few years ago, but I'd love to be wrong.

ayup bri.roger sidwell here or sid as it used to be.just managed to use this new fangled device.been stuck in the past for years .great to see you still in there after all this time.yes fred and me played in a band for a time back then.we did lose him im afraid.seeing all those names brings back some great memories for me. i recall cycling to your house and playing football with eddie.not seen anyone for years.

I enjoyed playing for the school, apart from when St. Peters beat us 9-1. They had about 4 of that years Sheffield Boys in their side including Ronnie Bryan and Johnny Cooke. They never allowed me to live that down!

Good to hear from you. Thanks for the flattery mate, maybe the memory is going.
Billy was a good pal of mine at Hillsborough, and it always surprised me that he really didn't want to be a pro. He went into the Police and did quite well there I understand. We are getting quite a gathering of the the clan on this site now which is great. Let's all stay in touch. I'm hoping to get back to the UK in the new year - if the health situation gives me a break - and we must all get together again.

Hi Roger and welcome.I heard that there'll be a reunion next year when we are all 60.Chances are that I won't be able to attend because I can only get to the UK in August when most people are away. For the past few years we've been having a mini reunion in late August usually attended by the lads but now and again Moe brings some of the lasses along.I hope to see you next year.Cheers,Glyn.

Ayup Roger, Glad you could finally make it to the gathering. We've still got a couple of 'hold outs' to be rounded up :ie Eddie Lister and Chris Housley, but I'm sure they'll make contact once they've been released :hihi: I've been over here in Florida since 1985. Started working as a typewriter mechanic and finished up working as a croupier on a gambling ship. Don't ask me how one job led to the next  unless you've got a lot of time on your hands! I'm afraid I can't see me getting back home to Sheffield in the near future as the bottom has dropped out of my business. For some weird reason, instead of gambling on the casino boat, people would rather spend what little money they have on food and clothing for the kids and mortgages....go figure? If I could afford to come over I couldn't afford to get back! All the best for now mate. Keep writing! Regards, Brian

Hi Glynn. Thanks for the Christmas card. I was out last night celebrating Ann Richardson's 60th birthday. Nice to know that everyone is catching me up. I certainly have my bus pass. The girls are planning to celebrate our coming of pensionable age with a trip to Barcelona, probably in April. Let me know your date for visiting this year and I will certainly try to arrange a reunion, with a little help from my friends. Civ gave me his phone number when he rang me back in August but I am not sure where I wrote it down. I understand that Geoff may be coming over some time this month. If he contacts me or Jim we can probably arrange a gathering at the usual place.

Ayup John, Thanks for the season's greetings. I know it's cold over there but at least it's seasonal. Over here in north Florida I don't know what to put on next as it's 30/40 one day and 65/80 the next. Of course Geoff lives in the posh part of the state further south, where it's a balmy 60/70 most of the winter. Must be nice to be rich :hihi:
