View Full Version : Any one go to Owler Lane Intermediate school 1960?
RichardJ44 09-09-2011, 17:02 Thankyou Richard
I will be taking the lightly boiled egg and acup of tea.
Not sure how to respond to this - for once I'm speachless.
I see from earlier posts you kept in touch with Ralph O'Donnell. I really liked Ralph. He arrived in time for our final year and revived the football and cricket teams. We hadn't had a proper sports master since the end of second year when a guy called Lupton left. So for 2 years we had no organised sport with other schools. Do you know where Ralph is now? I remember he once got us tickets for a cup tie against Burnley. He was a nice guy.
dereklawson 09-09-2011, 18:18 hi richard l remembered another teacher who came to owler lane in the year l was leaving his name was mr anderson, l dont know if you remember him? l cant acctually thik what he taught us , could you ? if you know of him.
RichardJ44 09-09-2011, 18:31 hi richard l remembered another teacher who came to owler lane in the year l was leaving his name was mr anderson, l dont know if you remember him? l cant acctually thik what he taught us , could you ? if you know of him.
Afraid I don't remember him at all. The teachers I remember in my last year were Mick Board, who was my form master and English teacher, Eddie Moss (French) Mr Priest (Chemistry) Mr Holmes (physics) Mrs Fairest (history) and Mr Helliwell (maths). I can't remember the name of the geography teacher.
The picture I've posted of our 5th year only has about 20 kids in it - I think this is because it was the end of term and after we had taken 'O' levels so a lot of people had effectively left. I think I could name 8 out of the 9 boys and about 5 of the 11 girls.
grafton 57 09-09-2011, 20:04 Hi my name is Peter Grafton and I went to Owler Lane from 57-62.Does anyone remember me?My last form teacher before leaving was Mr Moss(French)and I believe the Geography teacher was called Mr Sellars.
I remember Geoff Worth as a very good footballer and of course I remember Ralph O'Donnell arriving as PE Teacher.
Did you by any chance sit behind me with a Malcolm Edmondson?:
I can remember being caned by Pashley and Holmes for talking in class!! and I once hit Miss Fairest the history teacher with a cricket ball as she passed across the playground!

Hi Peter, I'm afraid I don't remember your name or Malcolm Edmondson and I think was definitely a year ahead of you. I might well recognise you though if I saw you. Thanks for reminding of Mr Sellars, I had forgotten him though I still can't picture him. The teacher I'm having trouble placing now is Mr Clark. I remember the name but I can't remember what he taught or what he was like. Well done hitting Mrs Fairest - poor thing! The same thing happened to me once when I got hit in the eye with a tennis ball - I played cricket for the school the next day with a black eye!

Hi Richard,
I am afraid Ralph passed away recently. I kept in touch with him by phone regularly up until then. A really great guy and I miss him terribly.
I still keep in touch with his nephew who is also a nice man. I have been able to fill him in on some of Ralph's football exploits as well as his teaching ability.
Regards Geoff

Hi Pete
I remember you well and hope you are keeping well. You will see my earlier reply to Richard regarding Ralph.
Stay in touch on the forum. I now look every couple of days now that people are writing again and it would be good to catch up.

Thanks for letting me know Geoff. How very sad, he can't have been that old. I would love to have been able to talk to him again although I doubt he would have remembered me. He was a man of great integrity and ahead of his time as a teacher.
dereklawson 10-09-2011, 20:02 hello to every one on the site,l dont remember grafton 57 ,l think l must have been a year ahead.but l remember mr pashley and getting the stick for talking in his french class that he taught when he first came as a teacher.Richard mr clark taught geography with quite an effect if you got the wrong side of his bunsen burner rubber hose!
dereklawson 10-09-2011, 20:04 great to see all this activity ,by the way, unfortunately its 9 05,wine time a nice glass or two of red back on tommorow
RichardJ44 10-09-2011, 23:37 great to see all this activity ,by the way, unfortunately its 9 05,wine time a nice glass or two of red back on tommorow
Quite right too! I'm doin this while watching the tennis.
I've read on the site about Mr Clark's tubing but I don't remember knowing about this when I was at the school. The only teacher who ever caned me at Owler Lane was Mr Glasby in a maths class in the second year.
dereklawson 11-09-2011, 19:15 l dont know if l wasa target for the cane fanatics but my list of caners is as follows,mr furness,mr lupton ,mr pashley, mr glasby( behind the blackboard). can any one remember the punishment book on display on a desk in the hall?it had derek dooley in the pages for all to see.do you remember at break time all the teachers having coffee at a table in the hall ? one of the girls who helped to serve up was a girl called jean or june burdon, a memmorable girl, quite well endowed, another was audrey knowles, also well endowed , does this say anything about our teachers?well l think this quote contains food for thought
RichardJ44 12-09-2011, 08:57 Ouch, you really did have a tough time Derek. I don't remember Mr Furness ever caning anyone. He used to get a plimsol from one of the other kids and belt people on the backside with it while they bent over a desk.
I do remember all the staff getting together in the hall for coffee and tea both morning and afternoon but I don't remember the girls serving and certainly not their names.
The more I think about it, the more I think I might remember you - have you found yourself in any of the photos I posted?
dereklawson 12-09-2011, 19:49 hi once again richard, l have browsed over the photos, once more and can't see anyone l remember. my last year was 4b and l left in july 1960, l got special permission to leave at 15 because l had managed to get myself an apprenticeship with captain boyd-rochford ,the queens trainer for her flat race horses at newmarket. l was quite a good rider back in those days.after l left all the apprentice jockeys went on strike for better conditions in there lodgings and more money, the point being that this gave me time to rethink about leaving the comfort of my home and family, the family and comfort came out a clear winner,if you can pardon the pun.this resulted in me spending the summer of 1960 going riding at the stables where l had learnt to ride ,going to show jump meetings before my dad said son time for work, and l got a job at sanderson brothers and newbold as an apprentice universal grinder.any thats enough for one night about my exciting life, some of the future chapters are equally as thrilling as the first one.watch this space for more to come
RichardJ44 14-09-2011, 08:33 Hi Derek, Sounds like you've had an interesting career. You must have been quite unusual for those days - I don't think many kids at Owler Lane would have been horse riding then. I don't think our paths can have crossed that much at Owler Lane - surprising when you think that the school wasn't that big. I was in 4A and left the year after you. I went on to High Storrs to do 'A' levels and then Sheffield University to do economics. But I ended up working for Samuel Osborn & Co, so in the same industry as you for a few years.
rainbow2411 14-09-2011, 08:38 Quite right too! I'm doin this while watching the tennis.

You must have been a very bad boy  if lovely Mr. Glasby felt the need to punish you.
Tara Misu 14-09-2011, 10:22 Always lived in Sheffield(well Swallownest) obviously not very adventurous and neither are my children. We all live within about 100 yards of one another. It's very handy for them as we are willing babysitters.Would love to get to one of the get togethers but it always seems to happen on one of my working nights. If they have one when it is possible, we could meet up and go together. June
I am now Tara Misu, due to a mix up over my new email address. I was only removed from here as I had tried to enter two different user names. Please use Tara Misu on any other messages. Thanks, Tara
Tara Misu 14-09-2011, 10:30 Hi June,
Sorry not got back to you before, but not been on the site for a while. Yes, I do remember you, I was in the school choir too. Like you I only did it to get out of lessons. I can still remember pythagorus theorum, how sad is that? I don't remember that blonde biology teachers name, but she was rubbish, had no control over us at all. I remember her trying, in vain, to shut us up and she ran off to the staff room crying. She left soon after that, poor thing.
Are you still in Sheffield, or have you moved away like Val. I moved around for a while but am back in Sheffield now.
Take care and hope to hear from you soon - Joan
Hi Joan. Dont't know if you sent any replies as I was removed owing to a change of email address. All sorted now though. I am trying to find out if they have another reunion date set yet. Things not changed much here, and have not been on the forum for a while. June

Hi there. Actually I wasn't naughty and really didn't deserve the cane on that occasion. I'd had the cane 3 times previously at junior school and deserved it twice but not the other time. On this occasion Mr Glasby caned me because I made a mistake with a calculation in a second year maths class. He had been going over the method and other kids kept making mistakes and he thought they were taking the micky. He said 'the next person to make a mistake will get the cane'. I then made an honest mistake and he had no option but to cane me even though we both knew it was unfair. Can you imagine anything remotely like that happening these days?!

hi richard l sypathyse with you , mr glasby took me for maths also, we used to get theorems to learn for homework, the next lesson we would be sat in class and he would hand paper to everyone and we would write what you had learned perfectly or else. well on a lighter note, l see you are based in norwich,l will be in norwich on october the 5th to go for my two monthly injections .if you would like to meet up let me know and we can arrange a time , l always finish my day in norwich by going to the nelson hotel. :)

Ah Brian. I have fond memories of Minnie or was it Mini ? She took us for History. I could not remember what had happened the day before let alone when she was talking about. Do you remember
beezerboy 16-09-2011, 03:10 I left in , and '60 Miss Fairest had been my history teacher until she told me not to come any more as I didn't like it. When we got married in '67 we bought a house on Clifton Crescent Handsworth,it turned out it was hers.

I lived in Handsworth in those days and, yes Mrs/Miss Fairest did live in that area. Sometimes I would see her getting on the bus which I had got on the stop before. Thankfully, I always managed to keep out of her way.

Looking at your photos, I was in your year at Owler Lane Intermediate. I was June Warrender, a quiet little mouse of a girl and still am. I lived on the Manor up to getting married, and now just live at Swallownest. Not well travelled like you lot. If you hear of any Sheffield reunion, could you let me know as I, and one or two others, would like to get there. June

Hi June, thanks for getting in touch. Which class were you in? You must remember some of the other girls (& boys!). I don't know about well travelled - at least I'm still in the UK. Norfolk isn't that far away - I was in Wortley only yesterday!

Haven't heard of it Derek. North Norfolk is a bit of a trek for us and there are so many places to go in Norfolk and Sufolk. Hope you have a good time and your wife enjoys it. From my knowledge & expreience of Spain, their medical services are pretty good so hopefully your pal will get the best treatment possible.

Tara Misu 29-09-2011, 19:55 Hi Geoff, Yes we're still talking about Owler Lane Intermediate. I suspect that Derek and I were a few years ahead of you in the school and maybe some of the peolpe we remember had left by te time you arrived. I left in July 1961.
Hi Richard. What was your surname at school? I feel sure you must have been in the same year as me. I was June Warrender and Mrs Needham was also my first teacher at Owler Lane. Mr Helliwell was my last, when I went into the Commercial courses. Also, have I read somewhere that there is a meet shortly, as I would love to get there.

Hi June, my name is Jenner. We must have been in the same class and you should be in the photo I posted when Miss Needham was our teacher. I know nothing about a reunion but would be happy to come along if there were one.

Hi Derek, thanks for the private message. I have replied to your personal e mail address but not sure if it got through. Just wanted to make sure it did and that you know I can't now meet with you tomorrow as previously planned. Cheers for now.
dereklawson 11-11-2011, 18:58 whats happened to all the ex pats? is every one on holiday?
RichardJ44 14-11-2011, 10:42 We're all on Facebook!
That's fine, so am I. But how do we all know how to contact each other? Generally speaking we only know each other's identity through the Forum and don't have names we can find on FB.

Great photo. I went to the school in 56 and left in 61 so you must have been a year ahead of me. The teacher was Mr Harrison as you say. He was OK. I kind of recognise some of the kids in the photo but can't put names to them.

Hi again. I am the same as you. I recognize quite a lot of the faces, but I am not there. Must have been in the same group as you, Facefacts. I was in the Commercial group. Were you? I can spot Susuan Peacock and Chrstine Wright, so perhaps that was a more domesticated group. June
facefacts 11-01-2012, 14:42 Hi June,
Yes I was in the commercial group too. I recognise quite a few of the girls, Norma Baxter and another one called Josie ??? can't remember her second name. Great to see these pics though and that one is really clear.

Excellent. I remember David Wiseman well. He was in the year above me but we played cricket together. He was quite a good fast bowler and I remember batting against him and the ball flying past my unprotected head! I don't remember any of the other names but the faces are certainly familiar. There was another lad in that year that played cricket too and I think his surname began with a P but I can't dredge up the name at the moment.
Hi Curlie, I too went to O.L. Int. in 62 and was also in Mrs.McDonalds class on the stage.
2 of the 3 names you mentioned did indeed take the Tech. exam but the third one, me,didn't!! Jim and Ronnie along with Les Asquith and Ian Gould passed to go to City Tech.
Do you remember Sharron Kerrigan? I thought she was "super"
Correction to yesterdays post.
It was Stephen Gould not Ian who passed for City Tech, Ian is an International Cricket Umpire.
I thought you might know a great deal about cricket because didn't you become a member op Yorkshire CCC Michael
I see your point about different threads!!
Yes I was a Jnr.Yorkshire Member for about a week till it became clear that I could only get to a couple of games at Bramhall Ln. and then only on Saturdays. My Dad returned my membership but I never learned if he got my 10bob back!! (see e-mail address on Hinde House thread!!)
Tara Misu 07-04-2012, 09:22 Hi there. I have recently come across quite a lot of old school photos and would like to put them on the site but don't know how. Can anyone give me some clear instructions as I am not very good with technology? Thanks

Hi there. When I put my photos on, I scanned them into my computer and then put them on Facebook. Then I copied over the webpage link. I don't know if there's a better or easier way to do it. Good luck trying. R

Hi there. Check out my latest effort. I have posted links to some school pics which you may be interested in. Thanks to Cat, I managed to do this without enormous problems. Hope you are okay.

Tara Misu 19-04-2012, 17:10 I would really like to organise some sort of reunion for those of us around the same age. I was at Owler Lane from about 1955 untill 1960. If anyone would be interested in a few of us meeting up, will you please put a message on this forum, and I will see what I can do.
facefacts 19-04-2012, 18:38 Hi again June,
I would be up for that if you get any response, fingers crossed eh? :)
