View Full Version : Odeon closing? John 01-03-2004, 14:30 Someone in the chat room (forgotten who) said the Odeon was closing down to make way for a hotel. Can anyone confirm this? Sidla 01-03-2004, 15:04 The first I heard of it was here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?postid=77765#post77765). Andy C 01-03-2004, 15:43 Thought it was just the NCP and Roxy that was being demolished - Sure the leisure complex proposed included the cinema. Could be wrong of course. Classic Rock 01-03-2004, 16:01 Planning permission has been approved for a hotel on the site of the Roxy, not sure if that encompasses the Odeon. The people who own Wembley own this site too. I was sure I heard that Kingdom were going to move to the Roxy temporarily when their building is flattened. bassman-x 01-03-2004, 20:59 Originally posted by tombeharrell I was sure I heard that Kingdom were going to move to the Roxy temporarily when their building is flattened. doubt it, roxy can't get a safety certificate and I can't see that it would be feasible for kingdom to fork out loads to get roxy a certificate when it's going to be a pile of rubble anyway in a couple of years anyway. bibble 01-03-2004, 21:56 I can't wait for the place to be demolished if that is gonna happen. I have always found that building to be one of the worst eyesores to Sheffields skyline. It always bothered me because it was right in your line of sight when you walked out of the train station - not very welcoming for new visitors to the city! Good riddance! Craig7777 27-07-2006, 06:39 God i hope not:( desy 27-07-2006, 07:21 Not again the Odeon closes, First on flat street, then Barkers Pool, then Arundel Gate. were will it be moved too next. Think the name Odeon is a jinx. Craig7777 27-07-2006, 07:23 Not again the Odeon closes, First on flat street, then Barkers Pool, then Arundel Gate. were will it be moved too next. Think the name Odeon is a jinx. Got another:) Pook 27-07-2006, 08:48 get rid of the place. God forsaken excuse for a cinema if you as me. And the roxy should've gone years ago. torin8 27-07-2006, 09:04 I like the odeon - fair enough it's not a pre WW2 theartre but it has character not like these multiplex places. If it is going then I'll be sorry :(. In addition to this the centre of Sheffield would be less of a place without a cinema complex. I was in there last night to see Superman Returns and they hadn't even bothered to switch on the air-con...as a consequence the film was ruined by the inescapable sensation that I might pass out at any moment! Flatten it and build something new, and in the meantime I'll keep going to the Showroom instead. torin8 27-07-2006, 10:52 Have to agree. A bit extreme to flatten a whole place just because the air con was broken or just not turned on.. did you ask about it? Pook 27-07-2006, 11:00 Perhaps they should open and close the screen curtains more often to create a draft Carmine 27-07-2006, 11:04 A bit extreme to flatten a whole place just because the air con was broken or just not turned on.. did you ask about it? Silly sausage. No air-con isn't the reason I'd support it's demise! It's more the fact that the building is poorly designed and the facilities are becoming sorely dated in the face of more modern cinemas. If the Odeon in town were located in a more remote part of the city it would have died a death long ago. The fact that all but three of the screens are tiny, the concessions are disgutingly overpriced and that they continue to play a prerecorded tape of Galaxy FM and have the silly break between the trailers and the film all add to the fact that it's a shabby and overpriced cinematic experience. torin8 27-07-2006, 11:27 It's more the fact that the building is poorly designed and the facilities are becoming sorely dated in the face of more modern cinemas. So just because something is built in the 1970/80s and you consider it 'poorly designed' it should just be knocked down? If you said that about a 1870/80's building there would be an uproar, after all they are often not up to modern standards but then people seem to care more about that age of architecture... probedb 27-07-2006, 12:51 Someone in the chat room (forgotten who) said the Odeon was closing down to make way for a hotel. Can anyone confirm this? Yay, it's really just a big TV showroom. Seriously I've seen bigger screens in John Lewis than in the Odeon. I don't know anyone that will actually go there anymore. okka north 27-07-2006, 12:52 That whole site is an eyesore. Once you are in that cinema it's ok, but it STINKS outside. Rich 27-07-2006, 13:44 I go to the Odeon quite a bit, cos it's cheaper than the Cineworld and Meadowhall. NJMUK 27-07-2006, 13:57 So just because something is built in the 1970/80s and you consider it 'poorly designed' it should just be knocked down? If you said that about a 1870/80's building there would be an uproar, after all they are often not up to modern standards but then people seem to care more about that age of architecture... Most 1870s/80s architecture is good. Most 1970s/80s architecture is s**t! Quite simple really! SHANE-D-PAIN 27-07-2006, 14:01 I go to the Odeon quite a bit, cos it's cheaper than the Cineworld and Meadowhall. Cineworld works out cheaper for me and anyway, I would not mind paying more if it means a bigger screen and a more exciting atmosphere. - There are only ever about 3 people in each screen when I go to the Odeon, that's boring, you need loads of people toi get into the movie going mood. I prefer going to the Pictures when it's quiet. neeeeeeeeeek 27-07-2006, 14:20 The Odeon is a terrible cinema which I don't think will be missed. I went past last week and assumed it had already shut! torin8 27-07-2006, 14:29 Most 1870s/80s architecture is good. Most 1970s/80s architecture is s**t! Quite simple really! All a question of taste really... after all they saved Park Hill Flats and made them a listed building... they could easily do the same with the Odeon! AtticusFinch 27-07-2006, 14:31 I'm a big film fan and I usually go to the Odeon. I like the cosy feel that it has. Many of the downstairs screens aren't big, so it feels a more intimate atmosphere. It doesn't get anywhere near as busy as Cineworld, which I think is a good thing. I'll go to Cineworld for the really big blockbusters and the films they have which Odeon don't show, but the Odeon is my regular cinema. If they are planning on closing it, I hope a new city centre cinema opens beforehand. It'd be really frustrating if there was a year gap between the Odeon closing and a new city centre cinema opening. NJMUK 27-07-2006, 14:35 All a question of taste really... after all they saved Park Hill Flats and made them a listed building... they could easily do the same with the Odeon! Who ever did that wants locking up in a nut house!!!! torin8 27-07-2006, 14:37 Who ever did that wants locking up in a nut house!!!! Maybe... sadly they probably got promoted and paid a whacking great pay rise. That's life :) (and no it wasn't me!) AlquarUK 27-07-2006, 14:49 no supprise! shame tho, used to go there as a kid. mrplodge 31-07-2006, 07:13 I would flatten the lot including the roxy the sooner the better meersbrook 31-07-2006, 09:09 Flatten it and build something new, and in the meantime I'll keep going to the Showroom instead. AMEN TO THAT! :) Nueropa 31-07-2006, 09:24 That Odeon is an embarrassment to Sheffiled. The screens are tiny! meersbrook 31-07-2006, 10:01 That Odeon is an embarrassment to Sheffiled. The screens are tiny! Couldn't agree more. *Excluding* the Showroom (which is, after all a very different kind of cinema and a 100% credit to Sheffield), we have to remember that the Odeon is the ONLY cinema in the City Centre, which is frankly a joke for somewhere the size of Sheff.. Even if the Odean WAS a state of the art complex (pah!) it would leave us low on quality screens in the centre etc. - when compared with cities of similar population size etc. *sigh* "Knock the bugger down, El Pronto" I say.. |
