View Full Version : Do you have an annoying neighbour?
My neighbour who lives below me (as i live in a flat) is soooo annoying he plays loud music and stupid times of the day for hours and decides to have street parties in our car park when he feels like it til early hours of the morning. I rung the police today who informed me that they can no longer do anything for this and that they have passed it over to enviromental health and to ringthem. So i rung thme who said they would send me out a diary to where i had to keep a record of it for 2 weeks and then send it back and if needs be they will provide me with some noise testing equipment.
It just seems to frustrate me because at the time its happening and your floors shaking and you cant hear your own TV it becomes annoying when nothing can be done straight away, but yet police arrest anyone for breach of peace for the stupidist things!
Also dont help that when you try and ring the housing office they are not open at reasonable times...
Anyone else had problems like this before?
mega_monty 17-12-2005, 00:44 Have you tried talking to your neighbour about the situation ?
They dont speak very good English and my friend tried to go down to speak to them today but they could not hear him banging on the door becuase of the loud music
I have some annoying neighbours like this....loud music, shouting and swearing at un-godly hours all through the week.
Me and my flat mate (2nd Dan Karate) confronted them one night when 6 of them were playing "knock-a door-run", after some heated words, and an extra 4 guys not even daring to leave their apartment, one of them hit my flat mate in the face....... big mistake.......silly boy!:loopy: Needless to say, since that night they have been as quiet as mice! ;)
At what times during the day is this happening?
If it's between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., then there isn't much that can be done anyway. Between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. the Environment Agency will use their discretion and, if they feel the case warrants it, will come out (at some time in the future ~ could be a long time) and measure the noise level. Then, if the noise is above a certain level, they will have a word with the occupant of the residence from which the noise is coming.
I've done the diary thing, gaining a number of points which would have helped to rehouse me.......except that after a certain length of time the diary is cancelled, your points are taken away and that's the end of it all until it starts up again!
Still get woken up around midnight on occasions with another set of neighbours having yet more relationship problems but have started to deal with this head on (no I don't head butt them) which has helped a little but it still happens now and again.
Next time you're in the council office - ask how many points will get you rehoused or if they can recommend further action on your part.
I know they offer mediation now where you and your neighbour would go for sessions somewhere near the Leadmill to talk it out etc etc.
Hope it gets sorted for you soon though, best of luck.
I dont want points or move house really and im not with the council anyway (cus they rubbish lol). The neighbours play music at any time of night or day. They have massive speakers like in a nightclub and put them in car park and have massive parties til all hours in the morning.
It really frustrates you. Enviromental health said they can now take the person to court etc.. (oh here we go again with music and floors shaking) I know its a long process and just frustrates you at the time when nothing can be done
Old_Bloke 17-12-2005, 12:30 Maybe you should get some big friends to go and have a 'quiet word' with your neighbours. Might help them to be more considerate in future...

If you can't beat them then join them, why not go and join their parties.
Do you own your flat or is it rented ? If its rented can you speak to the landlord ? Is this effecting your other neighbours also ? If so why not join forces with your neighbours.
I used to have a neighbour living above me who did maitnenance work after 10.30pm (drills, hammers, saws nails and the works) washing machine spinning at full blast after midnight, encouraged his flaming dog to run haywire all over the flat (with wooden floor boards) & held parties in to early hours.
As well as the diary I sent Environmental people emails to keep them up to date on the noise front; it was totally unreasonable even in the day and so I would simply add that "although I realise my neighbour is making this noise during the day and while it may seem to entirely reasonable I feel this demonstrates an overall inability to consider the needs of other tenants and this apparent failure to act with constraint is excessive" (or words to that effect).
You also have to provide details of your landlord and the tenant who causes the problem. In addition to doing that I also wrote to my landlord and the offending tenant who, at the time I felt were aware of my reports to Environmental people because of some of their replies. My principal complaint was about the dog because the dog-owner often shouted at the dog which was also often left unattended in a flat without any garden access.
Shortly after I reported the noise problems to the Environmental people, my landlord's housing officer saw the git who was my neighbour who is no longer my neighbour. :D
We don't have any annoying neighbours now but back when we lived at Walkley we had a manic depressive for a next door neighbour... And it was hell, she used to go round the house banging all the doors as loud as possible, and blamed my Mum for making all the noise :loopy:
In the end we moved up here to Stannington to get away from her, we didn't really want to as the mortgage was virtually paid off on the house, but we'd had enough of her, and also decided to move to somewhere with easier access to buses and stuff for me, which in 1997-98 Stannington had until they took the 83, the 20 and the 87 off us, the 3 most reliable services in the area
chickmonk 17-12-2005, 18:06 Go speak to them when they're not being noisy (you'll be calmer then). It's worth a shot to get them onside if you can.
Being non-confrontational with people often gets better results.
