View Full Version : Milkman/milkywomen
eggfuture 16-12-2005, 10:29 I wish the milkman would deliver my milk, in the morning.
Can anybody recommend a good dairy in the s6 area, or i there not that much between them?
To be honest, I've no idea what I'm talking about, I'm just interested in having milk delivered.
Cheers
SpeedwayDan 16-12-2005, 10:36 get ours from the supermarket, that way i can have ice cold milk any time i wish:thumbsup:
TheRedWizard 16-12-2005, 10:41 Last I heard, it was becoming more and more difficult to get milk delivered. Price of supermarket milk, very low margins and problems collecting the money was threatening milk delivery in many areas. Surely only a matter of time before milkmen/women are a thing of the past. (not saying that this is a good thing).
Knwe someone who was a milkman for a few weeks - loved the delviering bit in the morning, but spent hours trying to collect the money, had doors slammed in his face or was just told to get lost by customers, and was personally held liable for any monies not collected.
Probably not like this over this side of the hills though!

Yeah, just to clarify I do know that supermarkets sell milk, as well as all manner of shops and retail outlets around Sheffield.
northernboy 17-12-2005, 12:10 You could phone the Dairy Farmers of Britain on 0800 834823 (freephone) - they might be able to help
rothschild 18-12-2005, 01:36 We had our own milkround. We sold up just over 14 years ago now and we were lucky to get out when we did. Unfortunately despite our huge efforts to give an absolute 100% service to our customers we were treated as the lowest of low by many. Not all though......the majority were lovely people that appreciated the service we gave. BUT.....with the advent of the plastic 4 pint in the supermarkets the death knell was sounded for all private milk deliveries. We just couldn't compete. The "round" had to get larger and larger in order to make a living and not only that but we had to sell an ever increasing amount of different goods. I used to make it my business to look after our old folk and that included providing them with all the other little bits and pieces of foodstuffs that they asked for. As a result I set up a contract with a bakery and spent the whole of Saturday just delivering bread and cakes (and often other groceries) to many people. Our main profit was in milk and very little in other lines.......so as a result we ended up losing money by delivering other items to our elderly. I was the modern day "Tesco" delivery except my services were free! Hubby used to start at 2am in order to get as much milk as possible on the doorstep by 8am. Then he would be home for a couple of hours before going to "work"! He also drove part time in an afternoon. I did all the bookwork as well as collecting and my saturday delivery round. Did we make it? BULL......no way. It was all grind with precious little financial gain. I think it was the winter of 1999 when we had bad snow. He had managed a few hours sleep but I hadn't even gone to bed when the snow came down at about 11pm. I got him up and off we went. We worked all that night and all the following day up until about 5pm. People were stopping us and "buying one" like an ice cream van! The little electric milk floats couldn't move but because we were private we had a 4x4 so we reached the parts the others couldn't. Ok.......we did well that weekend but we worked our backsides off for it!
I can remember campaigning our customers for their support. We warned them that the day would come when our services would be welcomed and needed........but it was too late. The supermarkets had more or less succeeded in what they wanted.......and that was to get the lion's share of the market. Milk to them is just a "loss leader".......they used it to get people into their shops and buy other stuff and it worked. So now there are very few milk delivery men left. It no longer provides a living. It is sad because there was much much more to it than that. We knew our customers. Yeh we had some bad ones.......but the good ones far out numbered the bad. We were trusted and we helped. There were 3 ladies whose husbands had alzheimers........allways a cup of coffee at these houses because these ladies needed the support of somebody and we were there. Well......it was me actually and I allways made time for them. Then there were the medical emergencies. A few of those over the years. Then there were the night time thieves.......a few behind bars because hubby saw them and rang the police. We spent many hours bagging up potatoes for our customers. I would only ever use the best out of the sacks.....and throw out the bad ones! I allways gave overweight because I feared being challenged over a "light" bag.
BUT.......in the end it had to go because we could no longer justify providing this service. The hours were getting longer and longer and the money getting less.
We don't have a milk delivery on our road.......and never have done for the 9 years we have lived here. It is sad.........but the public voted with their feet. For any of you that still do have that fantastic personal service I would say to you all........support it because tomorrow it might be gone!
Just another memory........we ate yoghourts for a pastime in order for me to collect enough to be able to provide all of our customers with a bird proof bottle protector. Then there were the xmas cards........hundreds and all hand written by me. Fond memories but also glad to be shut of it all.
outfoxed 07-11-2011, 13:34 I'm looking for a milk delivery too, Hillsborough Dairies who we currently use put a note through the door this morning saying it was their last week. Who can we use now? Milkandmore doesnt deliver to our area. Live in S12. Thanks
alchresearch 07-11-2011, 13:40 I took up a doorstep offer a few years ago. It was initially cheaper than supermarkets then crept up. I didn't mind, I think milk is too cheap and would rather see farmers get more, but am happy to keep trades like this in business.
But then deliveries got later and later, well after 8am for delivery, and during Summer the milk was ruined when I brought it in after work.
Practically every morning on my way to work I see pick up type truck in S6 delivering milk.
outfoxed 07-11-2011, 13:44 My milkman is great, deliveries always before 5am and 100% reliability. No complaints, its a shame he cannot continue.

As to whether thay can deliver in the morning, I don't know. I like the idea of 'milkywomen' by the way.
outfoxed 07-11-2011, 13:49 I've just called the dairy actually to see what the score is. They arent closing shop! Thank god, there will only be a new person delivering it! Apparently the delivery guy shouldnt have wrote the note out because we will not see a change in service.

I use Richard Marsh, very reliable in delivery, not so in collecting money!
I've lost his number, but I got it from Church Farm in High Bradfield when I rang them to ask if they delivered milk.
Our milkman at Hunters Bar is fantastic - 100 per cent reliable, delivers before 5am in all weathers and doesnt have a heart attack if his delivery occasionally coincides with our doberbeast's urge to take a leak at silly- oclock. Well worth paying for delivery, always fresh milk and we're not chucking away stacks of plastic cartons every year

Same here, its the best option. Milkmen are crap, way too unreliable.
