View Full Version : Cant remove a virus...elp?
Norton is telling me i have:
c:\windows\system32\ld8F4.tmp.
Download.trojan
Done a full scan and came up with this....
Tried to delete, manually remove and quarantine .... no luck cant do it...? elp??
Do you have a CD or DVD writer or a second hard drive? I'd recommend backing up all your important files to one of those, and doing a full system restore if your anti-virus can't clear the virus.
Bit drastic I know, but I know from experience that it's often the only way to get rid of virus infection.
It's saying the file:
c:\windows\system32\ld8F4.tmp
is a trojan.
Just browse to that file, and delete it manually, use shift-del, bypasses the recycle bin.
If it won't, then boot into safe-mode, and delete then.
thanks for the tips...
cant reboot in safe mode...?
cant manually remove...?

found some good tips/links on this web site.. anyone used it?
i_like_cake 16-12-2005, 12:18 You shouldn't just be using norton, personally i wouldn't use it at all.
You should be running spyware scanners/cleaners. I have cleaned many a trojan with Microsoft Anti Spyware combined with Spybot- Search and destroy.
I use these 2 coupled with AVG anti virus, and the best thing about them is they are all free!
Happy virus blasting.
I've used avast before, Its a good anti-virus, so is AVG, which is free. At the moment though im using NOD32, and it's really good.
But, yeah, you should be using some more software alongside your antivirus. Microsoft Antispyware (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx) and Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/), again both are free. Theres also Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html), again, Free.
Why can't you reboot into safemode?
When your PC is booting just keep pressing F8 until you get a menu asking what mode to boot into, just select 'Safe Mode' and press the return key. Once it's booted up, just delete the infected file, then restart, it will then boot normally.
Hope this helps
Get Ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/) from the web (15 day trial)
Install and update.
Reboot your PC into safe mode (F8 just after the bios screen)
Run Ewido in safe mode and let it kill the nasties.
Make note of the serious virus/trojans and check in the folders where it lists it on the log that they have gone
Oh and my advise would be to get rid of norton as IMO it creates far more problems than it cures.
After you have rescued your PC I'd just go for AVG Free (anti virus) and Zone Alarm (firewall) with a bit of Spybot on top ;)
You might want to take the advice above with refrence to making backups too as the advanced virus/trojans that are with us today can be quite hard to remove in some cases and may even involve a system reinstall.
Good luck.. I'm sure you'll sort it ;)
EDIT: Just noticed that you are having trouble with safe mode...Run Ewido in normal mode if you wish but safe mode is better.
Hi
When you try to delete it, what happens? what does it say?

Bit drastic I know, but I know from experience that it's often the only way to get rid of virus infection. Yes it is drastic, and totally unnecessary!
Just browse for the file (which you'll probably find in either Window temp folder or Temporary Internet Files, and just delete it.

thanks for all the tips folks..  I was trying to get rid of a trojan on a friend's pc a while ago, and it kept saying access denied, but when I rebooted, made sure there was nothing running, and tried again, it allowed me to delete. Rebooted again, and it was gone.

Little_Alex 16-12-2005, 17:59 I've used Ewido in safe mode to remove A trojan horse (win propo. 32) and it worked a treat. Tried all sorts before that too. Good luck

rich, tbh theres more to life than formatting and system restore :)
not every problem needs you to do a system restore, in fact i dont even use it :)
i just couldnt get online, wouldnt accept my password and username.
thort id scan with avg and spybot, fixed the problems in spybot, avg found a java/byte verify virus in application data/sun/ blah blah blah...deleted the rar files, rebooted to check theyd gone, tried connecting to the net again, here i am :)
i dunno if its related tbh but it seemed to work, not a system restore in sight :)
