There must be a gag in there somewhere:D
Classic Rock 01-03-2004, 11:16 I took a train to Budapest many years ago and needed overnight accommodation. There's a tourist info place in the station which also books short stay hotels, B&Bs, etc. I had to pay them and was then given a slip of paper, an address, bus numbers and a map and sent on my way. I found it easily and handed over the paper to the owner and was shown my room.
That's a short term option. Alternatively just surf the net - there's bound to be places on there.
Thanks everyone!
I am surfing and reading the lonely planet guide and imbibing as much info as i can
:-)

No, Toby's brother does actually live in Budapest.
Be careful when getting accomodation. Ignore the people trying to offer you hotels and hostels (of which there are hundreds) near stations. Most of them lie about the quality of the accomodation, and you could well end up somewhere horrible. Try and research it and book somewhere before you leave.
What kind of accomodation are you looking for and where abouts are you going to be staying.
Well somewhere relatively inexpensive, where i have my own shower ;-), and easy to get to the town and tourist attractions
Have spent about four hours online reading about hotels and hostels.... nearly ready to make a decision

These are some hostel search engines that we used to book our hostels last year when travelling. Hope they're some use.

I was thinking more along the lines of my brother lives in tibet and is a Buda Pest.
However it IS a s**tty gag, I'll admit!
I can't remember the criteria I used now, but I have booked a hotel in Pest
Thanks for all your help and advice everyone [even Da Bouncer for his comic relief]
NOW - what are the top 10 things you would want to see if you were in Budapest
the castle district is well worth the visit. for fun you can get on this funnicular thingy that takes you up the side of the cliff to the castle. I believe the medievil citadel is worth seeing, but we never managed to see it. Gellert baths is def worth a visit, at the base of the citadel by the Szabadság (liberty) bridge. we spent the day there relaxing. there are different temperature mineral baths, saunas, steam rooms. You can also get a massage, and just generally chill out. it's a bit like swimming in a church, as the building is very impressive. If you visit any of the other thermal baths, such as Király baths, be sure to check the day you go, as certain days are gay only days, so have a look into it first. If I think of anything else, i'll let you know
Thank you very much Andy. Thats a great start.
If I get to all these places, will have a little travel log going :-)
Thanks again
The Margaret Island (Margitsziget) might be worth a visit too. It's in the middle of the Danube. The times I've visited Budapest I've always liked to visit the Central Market Hall (Nagy Vasarcsarnok) and the Matthias Church (Matyas Templom). The market has a special atmosphere and the beautiful church an interesting history.
If possible, go to the district of Óbuda, the oldest part of Budapest.
Hope you like your visit to Budapest - I think Hungary is a great and interesting country with friendly people. The language is difficult but it will be appreciated very much if you can say some basic sentences in Hungarian.
It was great..enuf :-)
I went to all the places you [all of you] mentioned and then some..the transport system in Hungary is great! I would love to go back there when the weather is better [because u know all the normal tourist attractions were shut!]
thanks to everyone who contributed. PM for any juicy details
