View Full Version : King Kong- Your Verdicts...
Tubthump 16-12-2005, 00:19 Like to hear your views on this one. Personally I thought it was a jaw dropper- an absolute entertainment masterpiece. Once again Peter Jackson shows that you can do a blockbuster with a high quality threshold. Great pacing, performances, charecterisation, effects, setpieces, imagination, I could go on. He is a master storyteller who really is in a league of his own. Am I laying it on too thick? What do you think?
Beakerzoid 16-12-2005, 05:39 Absolutely wonderful film. Peter Jackson once again astounds us all with a majesty of film-making. The first hour sets up the characters, then the action starts....and never lets up for a moment. The three hours running time flew past, much like it did in the LOTR films.
This is a film that contains everything that you need from a film - action, romance, love, anger, comedy, drama, a cracking cast, great sets, majestic effects, and the most emotional, sorrowful pair of eyes ever seen on screen (and that's Kong's).
Yes, we all know the story - but we all knew the ship would sink in Titanic, and that the ring would be destroyed in LOTR, and so on. Did that stop us watching them? No! Why? Becasue the fun of any ending to a tale is the journey there - and this is one that will enthral and surprise a lot of people.
Fans of Jackson's earlier work can look out for the brief nod to Braindead early on in the film. Also, the nod to the original film is well placed.

I might have missed that. Are you referring to the first scene in the zoo?
I totally agree with your assessment of "the most emotional, sorrowful pair of eyes ever seen on screen ", tugged on these cynical old heart strings they did.

On the ship....cage with Sumarian Rat Monkey sign on it. This was the same species that caused the zombie-like plague in Braindead.
AtticusFinch 16-12-2005, 22:46 I was just stunned by how moving a film this is. It's one of the most emotional films I've seen in a long time. You'd need a heart of stone not to be moved by this.
It was a surprise to get that level of emotive storytelling together with such great special effects and action scenes. I was expecting a big special effects blockbuster, but not such emotion as well.
For me the underlying message was the destructiveness, selfishness and stupidity of mankind, coupled with the genuine sense of unfairness about it all. All that he wanted to do was sit and watch the sunset with his girl, and they wouldn't even let him do that. There were times towards the end when I felt like shouting out "Leave him alone, just leave him alone!" :(
I go to the cinema all the time and generally see two new films every week, but I'd go so far as to say that this was my film of the year.
Lindseyw 16-12-2005, 22:54 I REALLY want to see this film, yet I cant as I know it will have me in floods of tears !!
skyfitsboy 17-12-2005, 14:06 What an amazing film! The Empire States climax is just breathtaking, this mve makes you realise how barbaric and cruel humans are as a species.
Well done Peter Jackson another masterpiece!!
We went to see it Friday night... Fantastic film... really enjoyed it... go see it if you get chance people!
3 hours... but well worth a numb bum!

I agree lots.
I bawled like a baby - if anyone saw a girl with mascara running down her face coming out of UGC/Cineworld today that was moi.
What a fantastic fantastic film - very much a story of three parts don't you think?
I wasn't sure about the casting of Jack Black but he pulled it off pretty well, although he just doesn't seem to be able to do a completely straight role.
I want to see it again - now!
Couldn't actually believe i was in there for over 3 hours! flew by. Great film
not see it yet, sounds like its good. should i go or will it be a waste of £6 at my local cinemas?
Sounds like it's mainly a girls film then.
I ought to agree with most of you, a wonderful film indeed

Definitely not just a girlie film... just touches ya heart in certain places...
Go see it nick... you will enjoy it... :)
dj_roberto_j 19-12-2005, 12:47 What a waste of time..
I enjoyed it at the start of the film and the journey on the ship, but that was it. It's on far too long and it's so predictable. It's as no way as good as the LOTR trilogy.
She (I'm not good at names) looks the spitting image of Nicole Kidman, and is that little boy (Jimmy, I think) is that the orginal Billy Elliot, or is that just me.
Anyway, my advice would be to see Harry Potter, Narnia or March of the Penguins instead. :D
Jonnymango 19-12-2005, 15:37 I disagree with the majority on here. I though that the film was 60 mins too long. Why did it need to be so bloated? It was also extremley traumatic. I found it difficult to enjoy the film in the knowledge that it was going to have a sad ending.
Having said that, there were good things in the movie. I thought the special FX were out of this world and that the attention to detail was startling. I also enjoyed the depiction of New York in the 1930's (?). Unfortunately, these good points were undone by some terrible acting, a leaden script and about 3 reels too many.
skyfitsboy 19-12-2005, 16:50 The special effects was amazing, the bit where that guy gets eaten alive by those giant grub leech things with the foreskin and teeth looks so realistic and disturbing!
sufc_tom 19-12-2005, 22:09 The only thing that came in my mind when coming out of that cinema was "cinematic experience".
Mindblowing film really. Being a fan of the original as a kid and absolutely compelled by all the kongs including the other 27 or whatever films they made including godilla and stuff!
i took my year old nephew, my initial thought is that he would be frightened and may want to leave but he was totally enchanted by this movie and has inspired him to draw kongs, write his name and even sat down and watched the 1933 original! Iv never seen a 6 year old boy sit so still and observant for 3 and a half hours until then.
Was a great film , with great special fx, great character growth. All in all - 10/10 would rank as one of the best films i have ever had the pleasure to see.
Beakerzoid 20-12-2005, 05:48 sufc_tom... If you are a huge fan of the old Kong and other monster movies I recommend picking up the SFX Monster Special magazine (available in all good magazine shops and Forbidden Planet) as it is a cracking look at films like Kong, Godzilla, etc with an interview with the master of Stop Motion...Ray Harryhausen!
ratbagtowers 20-12-2005, 10:11 As a kid I loved the original black and whirte King Kong...I watched it over and over and over.... so I approached the cinema last night with a little trepidation.....but WOW that was a fatastic film. They developed the characters, the story and the atmosphere to make it a complete story.
My favourite bit.... on the ice in the park.
The SFX were fabulous and some of the deaths very gruesome.
I LOVED IT!!
deelightful3 20-12-2005, 18:24 A friend of mine (male) took his 2 kids to see the film on saturday and he said it was the worse film he had seen this year, too long and boring in a lot of places, mite go over the holidays and see for myself.
Agent Gypo 29-12-2005, 15:34 It was ok. The scenes in New York are anti-climatic though, the first 2 hours are more interesting.
And it was better than Kingdom of Heaven, which I had to endure a few nights ago.
Agent Gypo 29-12-2005, 15:35 And good thought the effects are, cgi just does not look realistic. The film looks like a game.
crowefan 31-12-2005, 17:54 well a bit mixed really...............
loved
Naiomi watts (talented moving stunning)
KONG himself , fantastically animated,moving,
set pieces, mainly the opening scenes of new york, the native attack (very creepy), Kong spinning around grabbing blondes in times square, and of course the frightening climax up the empire state
hated
Adrian Broady ( awfull casting)
too many dinosaurs (the cinematography was so disjointed and frenetic that i couldnt make out what was happening with the stampeed and the t rex attack
3 t rex caught in the tree vines..........********
the insect attack (horrific)
I enjoyed it generally but found it ALL TOO MUCH
Soul1234 31-12-2005, 18:24 It is a GREAT Movie.. Greay Script and I am actually really glad to see Film is Moving into a completely Digital World . I wonder the Movies of the Future..
mr chris 03-01-2006, 20:33 I thought it was a very well made film in the sense of production values, but it all felt so.... unecessary. I mean, why remake it?
All we seem to get nowadays is remakes and cover versions. With the scope and imagination Peter Jackson has, not to mention the resources, he could have made something truly original!
Despite it feeling over long, it also felt as though parts were missing? Is this PJ aiming for another "extended" DVD?
bigsteve 03-01-2006, 20:37 one word 'pants'
antisocial 03-01-2006, 21:28 Saw the film today, both loved it and was disappointed by it if thats possible.
Think the main problem is that no one has told Peter Jackson, no thats enough, obviously he's a goldmine at the moment and can do no wrong and I think that has run away with him a bit. He needed someone to say, let's take it back a notch Peter....
The bits on the boat were rushed so we didn't see relationships develop, but the bits on the island were too long....yes you have dinosaurs and very nice they are too, now get on with it...Jack Blacks character wasn't really explored and neither was Jamie Bell's.
Saying that I sobbed from the time they captured Kong and think that the final part of the film in New York is genius, Kong is amazing, and most of the interaction between him and Naomi Watts was brilliant. The scene on top of the Empire States Building is heart wrenching and shows why Peter Jackson is showered with praise.
