View Full Version : What was the best advice anyone ever gave you ?
pattricia 15-12-2005, 20:45 Mine was actually something I read in an autobiography this year. I was feeling quite low at the time and the quote stuck in my mind.
"Learn not to look at the sorrow of what might be,but of the joy of what you have now."
cgksheff 15-12-2005, 20:47 "Don't start goin' on that there Sheffield Forum. You'll live to regret it, you know!":D
the_rudeboy 15-12-2005, 20:49 " If you've got any sense you won't listen to my advice"
'you really do need to get mortgage insurance and that company pension with the sickness cover'- saved my hide more than I would like to think about.
Cavellsuk 15-12-2005, 20:56 "You outwork, outthink, outscheme and outmanuever. You make no friends. You trust nobody. And you make damn sure you're the smartest guy in the room whenever the subject of money comes up"
uncleheed 15-12-2005, 20:56 "Don't bend down in revolving doors"
Not_My_Fault 15-12-2005, 21:07 I have to lengthen this entry for it to let me post it but it would have to be...
"Duck!"
discovery 15-12-2005, 21:07 My grandad used to say "Everything in moderation".
So that's how I'm living my life and its great.
Greybeard 15-12-2005, 21:11 My grandfather..."steer clear of women and drink".
' course I didn't listen :shakes:
daverity 15-12-2005, 21:24 'Never eat yellow snow' found that to be sound advice throughout the years!
And my grandfather on his death bed gave the benefit of his lifetime of knowledge when he warned me
'Don't lend your porn movies out you'll never get them back'
Thanks Gramps!:hihi: :hihi:
Someone has to be completely behind you to stab you in the back:suspect:

From my mom...
Never hit a wasp's nest with a broomstick
lovabulrogue 15-12-2005, 21:43 If you aint got ready cash, save up and buy it, by then you probably wont want it & don't have credit cards.
And I don't !
And never trust a fella who has the top button on his shirt done up and no tie on.
If at first you don’t succeed, blame some one else.
redrobbo 15-12-2005, 21:48 I give out the following advice -
If you can't beat 'em, confuse 'em!

Similar to mine: "Life is a series of highs and lows; it's all about striking a balance."
This is advice I give out to others:
"Never give advice, unless it's been asked for"...
It confuses some people at first, but then I think they understand. I hope so anyway
'Never judge someone without walking a mile in their shoes.'
That way, when you DO judge them, you're a mile away and you've got their shoes :D

Never trust anyone who says "Trust me!"
"Would I lie to you?" Always means they just have, they do or they will!...or maybe thats people in general? :suspect:
RazorSHarp 16-12-2005, 10:10 The greatest of all advice is that given by someone after you've already f****d up .......ie You didn't want to do it like that, or wouldn't it be better if you had...etc
My advice to them would have to be - **** off
lovabulrogue 16-12-2005, 13:06 In order to cure chapped lips, kiss a Dog's Ar*e. It stops you from licking them afterwards.
"when you find them- you will know!
and i did :D :D :D
Come day -- go day
What will be -- will be

eggfuture 16-12-2005, 13:19 'Don't move to Sheffield. You won't like it.'
Not taken.
KidPhunk 16-12-2005, 13:26 Never look a squirral in the eye
bensonhedges 16-12-2005, 13:29 "Smile whilst you take their money", from my old sales manager.
pussycat 16-12-2005, 13:48 From a male friend:
"Most blokes don't understand what you women mean by crap sex: there's just sex, great sex and amazing sex!"
and also
"The best advice is not to take anyone's advice".
eagleeyes 16-12-2005, 14:02 NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS TO YOU,
ALWAYS TRY NEVER DO ANYTHING YOU'LL REGRET...
THAT CAN BE 'DOING' SOMETHING OR 'NOT DOING' SOMETHING. ALWAYS KNOW IN YOUR HEART IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO, COS AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU ARE THE ONE WHO HAS TO LIVE WITH YOURSELF.
GUILT AND REGRETS WILL DESTROY YOU!
muddycoffee 16-12-2005, 14:08 From my earlier years of working in heavy industry, I was often taken to do jobs with a bloke who had been working on the firm for many years and they often had little mottos which they'd oft repeat by way of advice : -
1) Half the battle is finding the tackle
translation
Getting the correct tools for doing a proper job is harder than completing the job itself
2) Job's not done until it's clean
translation
Make sure you clean up after completing a job
3) Middle for diddle
translation
when setting up an instrument or control device from scratch, start with all the settings in the middle
4) Leave Well alone
translation
Don't fiddle with something if it's not broken because you might finish up spending all night trying to fix it again.
my grandfather told me this one ,hear all see all say nowt ,sup all eat all pay nowt, and if you ever do owt for nowt, do it for yer sen. he also told me to keep my friends close and my enemies closer ,and i always tell my daughter to be like water
Kristian 18-12-2005, 00:11 I once told a director of a company I used to work for that I'd not applied for a fantastic job I'd been asked to apply for because I didn't think I could do it.
She looked at me and said 'Kristian, sweetheart, I've never taken a job I thought I could do'. :) It wasn't long before I made my next move. ;)
every experience in life be it good or bad is a learning experience.
said to me by an old boss who drove 6 hours to get me out of a dodgy situation abroad then re employed me.
That was over 10 years ago and I still keep in touch with him.
" how can you love anyone, if you don't love yourself " and the quote at the bottomaswell:thumbsup:
muddycoffee 18-12-2005, 09:07 A friend of mine once met a Georgeous canadian girl and they got drunk together, she told him. .
"there's nothing more overrated than bad sex and nothing more underrated than a good poo!"
TheRedWizard 18-12-2005, 09:26 "Call no man Sir; call no man Scum"
From my late grandad. Always stuck by it, although I do use variations on the latter occasionally......
What was the best advice anyone ever gave you ?
There has been two two people from this forum who have given me some adivce and support ShSheff/BoroughGal, one said "people like positive people" and..... and the other bit of advice was "onwards and upwards......" and i know that you may think.... what are you talking about....?
but to me..
Its helped me to make a very positive change in my life!!
You have to know the full story to appreciate the full strenth of their advice.
"Don't get shot........no.....actually; DO get shot, just don't die!"
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger"
"Laugh or cry, the choice is yours"
LordChaverly 18-12-2005, 10:38 Variously attributed to Socrates, Confucius and Shakespeare, to be 'true to oneself' is excellent advice, to be followed throughout life (although this is often easier said than done).
It is best expressed in Shakespeare's Hamlet, where Polonius give the following advice to his son Laertes:
'This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man'
Don't trust anyone you work with.
It happened got stabbed in back.
muddycoffee 18-12-2005, 12:37 Some really great advice which was given to me when I started visiting universities and large companies to do scheduled maintenance visits.
"the most important person in the building is the porter or person in charge of the goods in bay around the back"
Make friends with that guy and ignore the MD and you get a better parking space than the directors, you get helped with stuff which needs to be carried, and you get let in the back way instead of having to faff around with reception.
absynthfairy 18-12-2005, 14:38 No man is worth your tears, and the one that is won't make you cry...read that on a tacky chain email and quite liked it...

Not recomended for treatment of depression :loopy:

Cliff Clavin 18-12-2005, 20:10 During the early days of the "Rave Scene", was it 91 or 92? After an all nighter, my Dad just said to me "don't mix too many drugs son, they'll eventually skrew you up!"

networky 18-12-2005, 20:23 Couple of the best I've had are :
"The person who builds to everyones advice gets a crooked house"
and
"At least if you risk something, even if you dont suceed you still learn something. If you do nothing you will get nothing"
Pete xx :hihi:
absynthfairy 18-12-2005, 20:29 Better to regret something you did do than something you didn't....
That seems to fit my life anyway....

"when men leave dont chase em.......just replace em. " told to me by a friend after my husband departed with a girl he met at work.
Its not really advice its just something i read at the beggining of a book and its a bit soppy, not something id usually say but ive remembered it so it must have made an impression.
"he who is afraid to grasp the thorn should never crave the rose"
(you can all cringe now lol)
drolnhoj 19-12-2005, 13:06 My dad always said,
"Son you will never get O levels out of beer barrels".
Unfortunately he was right.
footnote: for you young ones on here, O levels were what we studied for before they invented GCSEs.
jdgraham83 19-12-2005, 13:37 never trust a man with a pony tail

"keep your mouth shut when you are drunk"
unfortunately I never adhere to it :(
AlquarUK 19-12-2005, 13:51 Never trust a man that jangles the change in his pockets! ;) :D
The best advice, and something I try to live by is - "Don't knock it until you've tried it"

88.
'Leave well enough alone'-Oliver Hardy. This saying should be close to the heart of any true conservative. The world is full of people with the finest motives for all the trouble and misery their meddling and interfering causes. Sometimes, it is better to leave things as they are, undisturbed.
