View Full Version : Does it matter what you do for a living?
katy1981 15-12-2005, 16:49 after starting a new and very diferent job at my local lidl and after hearing some teenagers laughing at some young lads in my local KFC who work there i got to thinking why do they laugh at them surely at the end of the day a job is a job its surely better than sitting at home claiming social money?
i personally admire people who will work where ever they can get a job!
surely as long as it pays the bills then its ok ?
does it matter if your a high paid manager on X amount a year with a company car or just a sales assistant in the KFC down the road earning about a quater of what the manager above earns as long as your working and surely the high paid manager had to start some where he didnt walk straight into the high paid job he has now?
whats wrong with the young people today? do they have no work ethic or is it as my neice says its sad to work in the KFC aunty katy!
what do you think does it matter where you work?
Kids will always think it's uncool to work in certain places because of this and that reason. It's all just peer pressure between teenagers that trains them to think this way. While they're too young to earn their own money they won't see the upside of any job in the supermarket or fast food service and they'll just see it as booooring.
When they can't get money off mum and dad anymore the more sensible ones will realise that maybe wearing that uncool uniform and working a few shifts at the local supermarket or mcdonalds isn't such a bad thing if it means they're able to go out and buy new clothes or games (or even pay rent) with their earnings. :)
The lazier ones will of course find another way via the benefits system or worse.
Anyone who is willing to work to get what they want is ok in my book. :)
People can't laugh at my job, because only I know what it is and what I do :suspect:
I can't even tell my parents, girlfriend or mates what I do :help:

Why can't you tell?

No, you know where I work and in what nature my work is in but not what I do :hihi:
Not_My_Fault 15-12-2005, 20:42 A job can make a difference but no one is above or below any one else because of what they do....However, I'm never gonna be more than a drone. Its the drones that get everything done. Upper management is where you go to make the money on the front line is where you make a difference. Try running a country with no nurses, no police, no shop assistants, no bus drivers, no cleaners etc...it would be a load of over payed ponces sat around discussing how things would be better if only we had nurses, ploice, shop assistants, bus drivers, cleaners etc!

I agree. If I lost my job I'd take anything to support myself, and be proud of it.
I agree, a job is a job and being happy in ur job is even better.
I hate my crappy hours at work. Sometimes i feel i dont see enough of life, work, eat, sleep.
Personaly i put being happy before any job, even if i had to sign on.
bensonhedges 16-12-2005, 06:33 I think it's important to be happy in your job and good at it to a degree, as you spend so much time per week doing it. However , like previous posters, I would take just about any job if necessary. I am 39, and have been unemployed for only 5 weeks since I left school at 16. I could not just sit around and do nothing all day.
As long as you're happy with it and it meets your needs then a job's a job.
However, don't allow yourself to be defined by a job. You're not a shop assistant, manager, software engineer, tea boy; you're someone who's job is one of those things.
As Eliza Doolittle said in My Fair Lady - "I shall always be a common flower girl to Professor Higgins, because he always treats me like a common flower girl, and always will. But I know that I shall always be a lady to Colonel Pickering, because he always treats me like a lady, and always will. "
I believe that to work at a vocation one loves is an essential part of being human - but don't allow the JOB you do to pay teh bills define you.

And at the same time, try running a country with no one organising things - you need both groups. There are as many underpaid and overworked managers in parts of the economy as there are underpaid and overworked 'drones' (horrible word) in other parts of the economy.
Snobbery works both ways - I've been both, and both have their pros and cons. :)

Personally I would not take a job like Katie mentions on her opening thread for two reasons.
One is at 46 i'm to old or young to start worrying about ethics of a job and look for something interesting for my last 15 years of work life rather than just a job.
Secondly, If I was a teenager again I would do my time differently.
I would ensure I found a career that I had fun and enjoyed, national trust work or some outdoor conservational work rather than some droal job in a fast food house.
I'm not knocking the job but its hardly a career for a youngster is it.
Mind you, if thats what they enjoy then fine.
That kind of job would suit a partner who's wife or husband are the main bread winners and would just help with some extra luxourys.

And so would I, I have always had to pay my way in life.
I never got pocket money when I was at school, I had to do a morning and an evening paper round.
Ive taken any job I could to support myself.
I consider myself lucky now, I enjoy the job I do and it pays very well. :)

I was going to say nobody is above or below any job but I had the feeling some smart ass would say that some people wouldn't be capable to do some jobs, which is true but twisting the point slightly. Everyone as their skills and abilities, its not worth ranking them one above the other. A surgeon can save a life but without someone making his equpment, producing the electricity, cleaning the enviromet etc etc he wouldn't be able to do his job...
*smart ass comment space for some one who would like to point out that people can save lives without these things*

most people who do the jobs at take aways and fast food outlets usually only use it as a steping stone i.e they havnt finished college/ universerty
i personlay chose my new job on these things
1 - its a five min walk from my house
2 - the hours are so much better than what i was doing in catering
3 - the work isnt rocket science or as physical as catering
4 - the pay is better than most think
i was brought up in a family where eveyone worked, having left school in the thatcher years ive obviously had times of unemployment but it didn't stop me looking for work and i always found it (eventually) ive had some really **** jobs over the years but imo a **** job is 10 times better than no job.
i'm now in a position where i do the employing and ive said it before i wouldn't touch the under 25's with a barge pole...not without a good recommendation anyway.
Funny old world eh?
Today on Radio 2 (ahem) they were discussing Britains reaction to a possible Avian Flu outbreak. Apparently delivery drivers are going to be considered essential workers as without them food won't get to shops and everyone will panic buy leading to shortages, riots and a general breakdown of society.
Cool Eh?
I do my job because I generally enjoy it, it keeps my brain going most of the time but I have no managerial responsibility. Also no stress which is a big bonus.
Even better, after years of being a workshy layabout I discovered that a job pays SO much more than dole so now I go on expensive adventure holidays every year.
STORY - In my job I visited a company in Barnsley who employ a lot of Lithuanain workers. The company has an agent out there who sends them over. The co. director explained that when he employed the local chavs they'd turn up for the first couple of days then go off on sick then come back for a day then go sick. Basically the director could gauge precisely when they were having a skinful the night before and then not being bothered to work the next day. The Lithanians worked solidly, drank moderately at weekends only, lived cheaply and locally and sent most of their pay home.
NOW WHO WOULD YOU RATHER EMPLOY?

Katie, not having a pop at your job lass, just finding it difficult why youngsters go into fast food jobs.
I know there just ports of call on a temp position and thats fine but if a teen was to take up a career serving at KFC then I would suggest they have wasted 11 years at school.
Psss... Can you get us a discount.
*Twinkle* 17-12-2005, 12:44 Ofcourse it doesnt matter what job someone does... so long as they are working, and earning, it is entirely irrelevant...
I work in a cafe making baguettes... Crap pay and I go home smelling like a baguette at the end of the day... But it pays for my car and gives me the "people skills" that will be vital for when I get into my career :D
So long as you're happy and its convenient for you Katy, thats all that matters ;)
