View Full Version : Large police presence at Sheffield station on saturday evening?
jiminy_crick 29-02-2004, 16:48 Hi all,
I was driving through Sheffield yesterday evening, i got to the large roundabout near the station and became stuck in heavy traffic (not unusual for Sheffield i suppose!) as I crawled past the station, i noticed a large group of policemen (around 30 or 40 if not more i would guess). They were marching in rank and file into the train station.
I've had a quick look around local news sites and could find nothing relevant to the incident. Just wondered if anyone has heard what this was about?
Bristol supporters maybe?
i was going thorugh town at bout 1.00pm and i saw them. I thought it could have been because of the match, but i dint realise until i got home that United was playing away.
The police were all round near the Howard!!
Hmph!!! i wonder wot was happening!!
jiminy_crick 29-02-2004, 17:03 probably is just bristol fans actually, didn't think of that. They were probably most annoyed at the end of their 11 game winning streak, especially at wednesday...
Wednesday won yesterday then?
Yup, 1-0 to Wednesday in the 90th minute. Hehehe, oi bet those Brizzol fans werr well hacked orf!

Moon Maiden 01-03-2004, 16:19 Hillsborough was pretty busy on Saturday with police vans and black mariahs!

I got on the tram with lots of others at Leppings Lane after Saturday's footbal match. As usual the tram was crammed.
Just before it set off, a large number of police officers arrived and talked to the tram driver. The doors closed and the tram set off with the police walking at the side of the tram. We slowly made our way towards town and at the first two tram stops, the driver did not open the doors. Some of the police officers pushed gainst the doors preventing them opening.
Despite the fact that most of the passengers were Sheffielders, the tram doors were kept shut all the way to Ponds Forge., with people yelling to be let off at each of the stops.
At Ponds Forge, we were told that the police would escort us to the station. That was fine for the twenty or so Bristol fans on the tram but the rest of us were not too pleased. I had only paid to go to the University as I was not expecting to spend Saturday night in Bristol. It had taken nearly an hour to get to Pond's Forge from Leppings Lane.
As I walked back towards the town hall, the next tram from Leppings Lane disgorged a load of Bristol fans at the Cathedral.
I wonder if the police had escorted the wrong tram?

Won the last 3 league matches actually. It will have been cus of Bristol fans/hooligans, they brought quite alot to hillsborough, attendance was about 25000. Maybe there cus of returning united fans/hooligans and wednesday fans/hooligans meeting aswell.
Internetowl 02-03-2004, 14:28 its a pity the pigs (not United fans on this occassion) missed out on the real action out at Beighton!
imagematters 22-11-2009, 11:28 It was nothing to do with football. My partner and I witnessed 20 police vans and 20 police cars out side the police station getting ready to go out at 6.30pm. When we walked back some 3 hours later, Officers were still comming and going, they looked like they were set up to raid premises. Yet again leter we saw the police chopper over park hill & the manor. we also saw the Real Radio Car and some Press photographers, so something heavy was happening, anyone know what went off?
I cant believe the crime fighters are still there after all this time.
