Can anyone confirm if the 51 bus to Lodge Moor, around 1977/8 and maybe later, used its terminus on one of those small side roads at the end of West Street? Just near City hall Tram Stop area, sure it used to park up down one of those short streets which was its city centre time-point?

I got the feeling that the Lodge Moor bus went from the end of Trippet Lane. Could be wrong though.

It went via Trippet lane yes, but the actual stop was on the road that links trippet lane to west street, what is it called now, last road on the left of West Street heading into town......short little road, the terminus used to be down there on the left...

I used to get the 51 home from school back then, and I know coming back from the Lodge Moor end of the route, we used to have a terminus on Hawley Street, just near the beginning of the tenement flats on Hawley St/ Townhead St. On its route to Herdings, it would then go to where the tram stop is now, at the Cathedral, and then go right, at the hole-in-the road, along Arundel Gate.

Around the time I left school the route altered slightly, so it went along pinstone street, and turned down Furnival Gate, stopping outside Allied Carpets.

I remember the 51 used to go down Townhead Street to Broad Lane on the route OUT of town to Lodge Moor, and had a terminus/ time point at Hawley street coming INTO town.

Cycleracer, are you thinking of "HOLLY" st, back of the city hall?( *wonders*)

Yes thats right, I remember now, thanks for that info. There used to be a phone box next to the 51 Lodge Moor route terminus, whenever I missed the final 11.15 bus I had to ring my Dad for a lift.....very useful place for a phone box as well!!!!

I used to catch the 51 from where I lived in Lodge Moor to school at Gleadless between June 77 and June 78. At that time the route towards Lodge Moor went from Leopold Street left into West Street right into Holly Street and then right into Trippet Lane and the bus stop was at the end of Trippet Lane next to the terminus for the 50 Dore route. From there the bus turned left into Townhead Street and then up Broad Lane. At one time I think prior to this I think the 51 may have stopped in Holly Street. On the journey towards Herdings the 51 went from Broad Lane up Hawley Street and stopped at the top by the tenements as mentioned by PT. The 51 would continue right into Campo Lane and then across onto Leopold Street.

It did stop on Holly Street for sure next to the phone box but in the 70s as this thread is asking it did not go to Heardings in those days.
it was Lodge Moor to City centre only and started and ended on Holly Street.

PT....Holy, Holly, not sure which is which, is there also a Holly Green off the Moor.

The official terminus of the 51 was Pinfold Street which was the end part of Trippet Lane down the side of the Telephone Buildings to the top of Townhead Street. The terminus of the 50 was also once given as Pinfold Street but had been changed to Trippet Lane by the early 60's.

Plain Talker has it spot on, Pinfold Street going to Lodge Moor, Hawley St going to Herdings. How can I be so sure? because I was the inspector for quite a few years who supervised this area. It was one of the most isolated, cold areas any inspector had to manage, do I miss it? like a hole in the b**.

And the shelter wasn't up to much, - bare steel poles supporting a corrugated iron roof. But that stop was the starting point for many a happy Sunday spent in the countryside in my youth :)

Right from my childhood, IIRC the 51 terminated at Herdings, at the opposite end of the route to Lodge Moor.

We used to catch it frequently, pre-1973, with my mother, when going to- and-from two of my aunts', who both lived on the Arbourthorne (one lived near Hurlfield school, the other near Daresbury Road)

Holy Green_-yup, that road still exixts, (but "only just") as a cut-through, beside Atkinsons. It is blocked off to traffic, these days (and has been for many years) by the ramp into Atkinsons' car park, from Charter Row/ Moore St.

I also remember the 51 going to Herdings from the early Seventies. I think before about 1972 it ran as far as Gleadless Town End at least from about 1965. In the Sixties and Seventies I used to catch the 51 when visiting my grandparents on the Arbourthorne. I had forgotten about Pinfold Street being the official stop on the route to Lodge Moor.
