View Full Version : Rowdy Camping Suggestions?

Hi,

I have been searching the forum and have been unable to find a definitive answer to a conundrum I face:

A group of us would like to go camping/campervaning around the sheffield area, preferably in the peaks. Some of the group can be a bit rowdy in the latter hours and there may even be an instrument or two involved at some point. I'm not talking about going mental, I just don't want to annoy any others that are planning to get up at the crack of dawn. We also have nice big firepit that we'd love to use.

So, does anyone know of a campsite that would happily accept us? Or any other ideas? Back home we used to know someone that would loan a spare field for such occasions but I've not been able to find anyone who does the same here.

Cheers!

Completely nosy question, and no help at all, as I've never even been camping, but I'm curious, where is 'back home'? x

We had the same issue at the last bank holidays, group of 6 of us, 3 birthdays and loads of beer, we found Cold Springs farm(Just outside buxton center) very accomodating, we got very drunk and no complaints over noise.

Watch out for the Staffy Pup onsite(Betty), she kept pinching a rug from our caravan.

I saw several fields near Upper Brough with signs up saying 'camping by arrangement only', they were basically just fields that a farmer was allowing a bit of camping in and they were practically empty, they'd probably allow a bit of a noise and a firepit (? is this a raised device to stop you burning the ground?)

You may be better posting here. (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=135)

Malky: Hmmm, I wasn't sure where to post but I gauged that maybe the camping threads were a bit more serious than I was after.

Cyclone: Yeah, the fire pit is just a glorified metal dish on legs - see we are responsible types. Although, the main reason for the firepit is to help light our fire poi which will probably be considered by most campsites to be less than responsible. Anyway, Upper Brough? Is that anything to do with Brough, between Hope and Bamford?

Leah-Lacie: To keep an air of mystery about me I'll just say, the midlands.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Fire Poi - had to look it up. Yes it does look like it could be less than responsible but no doubt appears excellent fun!

A few years back we stayed at a campsite somewhere in Birchover. We were a large group- we had a field to ourselves (except for some empty caravans), and a barn which we could use for the evening in case it rained, or we wanted a space big enough for all of us to fit in. We were v drunk and noisy, but we positioned away from the other tents and didn't seem to bother anyone. There were definitely some pois played with too. Can't remember the name I'm afraid, but sure you could find out. Seem to remember it being conveniently close to a pub too...

We have stayed at Barn Farm in Birchover for the last 4 years in May. We have always been able to get away with a lot of noise etc but this year they were far more strict.
There were 17 of us....we may need to find somewhere else for next year! :(

I'd just like to congratulate Sephwhy and the others for being so considerate to other campers, as tent owner with two young children I just wish everyone would consider the impact of noise on early risers.

That is because the locals are trying to get the site closed, for that very reason. Last time I was there, a rowdy group caused a load of bother for the site owners and the police were called in.

Oh dear, I'm not sure we're planning on being rowdy enough for reinforcements to be called in.

I've noticed that they have the following statement on their website:

Just a reminder that on site music has to be OFF (completely) at 10:30pm and we also ask for noise to be kept to a minimum from 10:30pm - 7:00am

I am glad you are a considerate camper and taking steps to avoid annoying other campers. Yeah, things have changed on that campsite, maybe for the better if it saves the site from closure.

Anyhow, there are probably many sites about that have 'group' fields, away from the quieter campers. There is a site at Haddon that has a group field. M

We have never been so noisy that the police have been called....nowhere near to that extent. We get on really well with the security guards who come round during the night who always say that we are fine! There are always groups there that are more noisy than us.

Yes, just a bit higher up the valley than Brough, the last bits of settlement before you ended up at the bottom of Kinder Scout.

I've had the same experience with Barn farm - been there with big groups in the past, but last year a friend started playing a guitar (acoustic, just quietly strumming while others were sat talking, and we were at the far end of the field away from other tents) at 9pm ish, and one of the blokes in neon jackets came over whilst on 'patrol' and asked him to stop.
Totally understandable if there have been complaints though, it's a lovely campsite and I'd hate to see it shut down.

I've camped in a field between hathersage and grindleford a few times (going back 6 + years now) where the farmer just came up on his tractor the next morning and asked for £2 each. No facilities, literally just a field. Don't know who you'd have to contact though, it was always arranged by someone I've since I've lost touch with.

Try Reighton Sands near Filey. I've just returned from a weekend there and it was the noisiest campsite I have ever stayed on in 30 years camping !!! The only site I could get on at short notice (now I know why) field was quiet when we arrived and set up in a corner, arrived back after a day in Scarborough to find a group of 20 + men had set up camp next to us plus other all male groups at various spots on the field. There was fighting, equipment set on fire, shouting untill the early hours. Great if you are into that but it is supposed to be a family site and we had a 2 year old with us. We stopped a second night because reception said they would evict the men (they had a number of complaints and some people asked for refunds and left) we arrived back at the site in the evening looking forward to some sleep and to our horror the guys were still there and so a second night of drunken shouting had to be endured.
It does seem like a free for all with security and reception having little control, if you want a rowdy weekend get in there quick as I am just about to start writing my formal complaint :)
On a positive note thanks for thinking of other campers and looking for a suitable site to enjoy yourself. In our younger days!!! we used to go and party in the mountains of Wales for days on end, some lovely isolated spots down there.

Sounds like Middlewood Farm near Robin Hoods Bay. But the bad reviews seem to never get published on the UK CampSite website.
