View Full Version : Oldest part of sheffield Tiname 14-12-2005, 13:39 Can anyone help with what is the oldest part of sheffield. the_rudeboy 14-12-2005, 15:01 There is a lot of interesting Sheffield history to be found here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Sheffield) Greybeard 14-12-2005, 21:35 The oldest part of the town would be the area between the castle and the cathedral. According to David Hey excavations in 1927-9 revealed the remains of an Anglo-Scandinavian building on the site of the later, probably wooden, Norman castle built around 1100 by William de Lovetot. The castle was rebuilt in stone, and a new parish church erected shorlty after the Barons War of 1266. But there is no certainty about the age of Sheffield as a settlement. Gethical 14-12-2005, 21:44 I'd say the road network :D Longcol 14-12-2005, 23:02 The contents of a former work colleagues wallet. Don_Kiddick 15-12-2005, 08:53 Dinnington is a Viking settlement (not just OUR Vike, but his ancestors) And Laughton is mentioned in the Doomsday book. carcrash 15-12-2005, 08:57 You could go back a lot further with some of the pre roman stuff thats knocking around, Wincobank fort for instance FallenAngel6 15-12-2005, 09:00 I know that one of the oldest pubs in sheffield is The Queens Head near the bus station, its a weird but nice place. I wouldnt know about the oldest place in sheffield but i would have thought it was the cathedral.
