snowboarder 29-02-2004, 11:19 AM Hi there, just joined this forum and your fair city, and I like what I have seen so far. Can anyone talk me through the best bars and pubs going and which to avoid? I like thriving and busy places, not too 'townie' for want of a better word, but a good mix of students and locals. Want to avoid the 20 pints of lager beer and football type attitude places where everyone wears short sleeved shirts and has the same haircut if possible.
Got off to a bad start I think, went to a bar in town near the bus station.....not impressed, but no offence intended to anyone who may drink there. Just looking for places a bit more 'modern' shall we say with a good blend of people rom all walks of life.
So, bars where 18-30 yr olds hang out, prefer studenty type places with a good mix of fashions, styles and eclectic mix of hair cuts and the odd designer bottle of wierd green beverage.
Someone said getting a taxi home from the city after the bars shut is a nightmare....is this true? Where r the best places to get a taxi without joining a 10 mile Q.
Mosherchik 29-02-2004, 11:34 AM Best studenty bars IMO are the Cavendish if youve got a student card you can get a Yellow Card and get £s off drinks (and you can use it in all Its a Scream bars and I believe in Sheffield we have 4!!) Varsity is okay and just opposite Cavendish on West street and both do £1 a bottle nights  if you want something more alternative theres the Dove and Rainbow round the back of Argos on Angel St thats normally got the goths/punks in and got good deals on booze :headbang:
You could also try the student union bars The Hub at Hallam is ok as is Bar One at Sheff Uni, but beware if you havnt got a student card you'll need someone with one to sign you in on some nights :loopy:
Also Devonshire Cat is a good studenty place and just a stone's throw from the Corp :D

Revo andForum on Division St,Takapunas(sp) and Mode on West St,Bia Hoi just off West St. All good bars and you get a good mix of people in them.
raskel 01-03-2004, 11:18 AM empire bar near top of the moore!
great place, good music, young people.
:)
jackthedog 01-03-2004, 11:38 AM The Empire Bar seems to specialise in under-age drinking, yet that place was the only time I have EVER been asked for I.D. in my life. And I was 20 at the time!!!
You wanna stick further up town, snowboarder.
Division, Devonshire and West Streets. Quite a few weekend millionaires in Forum and Halcyon etc, but it's okay.
Or try drinking around Eccy Road or Broomhill for the full student thang.
jackthedog 01-03-2004, 11:41 AM If you go in Revolution, ask for a Polish Yellow. It's fantastic stuff.
Classic Rock 01-03-2004, 01:10 PM I would highly recommend a pub called the Classic Rock Bar at the town end of Ecclesall Rd. Good mix of students, non students and musicians. Entertainment in the form of bands every night of the week. Very good prices on beer too. Very good looking landlady also.

ROFL!!! :P
snowboarder 02-03-2004, 01:55 PM We did try some of the so called "rock bars" in Sheffield but cant say I was too impressed. I was curious.......The Casbah was horrible....just did NOTHING for me at all. perhaps I was in the wrong mood? Like stone cold sober, I was the youngest there, the average age seemed 40.
The SPortsman up the road was tolerable but smelt of vomit and the beer was undrinkable, but a fair few interesting people in, the "old school" rockers I would say. They were welcoming though....might go back again....rock is not specifically my thing, I like all sorts, but Sheffield seems to have some good mix of music cultures compared to a certain narrow minded town I left behind!! Someone pointed us in the direction for the Boardwalk, but sort of got caught up with a tribe of women on the way and went to some big loud disco bar place, dont know its name.
The best bar so far, and we did loads monday, was the Cavendish....sorry but it was ace for fit chicks by the Pool tables....(trying not to be sexist but failing miserably)
yet to find the Classic Rock bar.....I hope it kicks!!!
Cyclone 02-03-2004, 02:18 PM try the yorkshire grey for pool and being slightly quieter or the rowbuck, directly across from the yg.
Also the devonshire cat, excellent range of strangely named and tasting foreign beer, no music, chance of a seat if u get there earlish and close to corp if you want a rock club to finish the evening off.
bibble 04-03-2004, 11:44 PM You need to get out of the city center! Get along to the Porter Cottage at Hunters Bar. Always been a great pub, just the mix you mentioned and you will not find a faster bar service in the North of England! No joke!!
