ALZYMER 14-12-2005, 09:08 AM I lived on the Manor Estate, Ravencarr Rd, through the 50's and early 60's, and I wondered if anyone knew the following tearaways from around that time, and what they're doing now? : Dave Mossman, John Day, Tony Wespy. all on Paulet Rd. Norman Elgie( Elgy?) also known as 'NoNo' on Darcy Close. Eddie Lister, Brian Jacobs, Jimmy White, on Fairfax Rd and John Connelly, Stanground Road.

Unfortunately memories have faded & so have names but these I remember for many reasons: Wraggs, Noonans, Fosters, Graysons, Weeds, Pallister, Malones on Harborough Avenue. Palmer, Hotchkiss, Bainbridge, Betson, Drabble, Allen, Dolby, Beeby(?) Wilson, Toogood all around Ravencarr and Stonecliffe Road

Don't remember any of those names Jack. Guess like you said you need a good reason to remember some of them. Maybe like got into some mischief together with them or being in their gang etc
Vera.
ALZYMER 19-12-2005, 05:59 PM I think you're right there Vera, if you didn't get into any trouble or have somebody's mam coming to your door to complain, you didn't tend to socialise much. After all we weren't exactly part of the 'Cocktails before dinner crowd' on't Manor! By the way, does anyone remember that poor soul we all called 'Mad Harry'? He was around thirty years old I think, mentally retarded and walked with a limp. He was always up and down our street going to the shops on Prince of Wales Rd, usually with his poor old mam. I feel so ashamed, now I'm older, at the names we used to call him.

I only knew Geoff Tarbut??
jackandclaud 21-12-2005, 09:28 PM Remembered some more names of people living in houses bordering 'the field' on Harborough Avenue: Swift, Ward, Fenton, Cowlishaw, Hobson, Doherty and a lad we called Ronnie Onions but I can't remember his real name.
I was thinking about the various street traders who operated on the estate in the late 50's early 60's: Craig's ice cream with his trilby in his green and cream Fordson van (I think he had a blue and cream one too), B & C co-op mobile shops, the tripe man in his grey van who used to announce his presence with a hand bell, Fentimans soft drinks, A bloke (who may have been called Mr Fidler) selling fruit and veg from a horse and cart, some old lad who used to sell firewood from a horse and cart in the winter months. There were also two blokes who used to deliver horse manure in an ancient and smelly Dennis lorry. One was the brains, the other one carried the manure in an old dustbin on his back- he had a suspiciously well tanned back of the neck and forearms. The brains had a permanent 'pooh! wot a stink expression' and carried a loo brush for dispersing spillage from the carriers neck and shoulders! Anybody know any more?

I
Fred Sykes was the coal man he always wore the black leather jacket on his chest when he went out.
Andromeda 29-01-2006, 04:36 PM I lived on Darcy Close until 1968. I know some of the names you mentioned but only because I knew their relations. I was in the same class as Brian Jacob's brother, Kevan; I was an aquaintence of Jimmy White's sister, Janet; and Brian Elgie (some relative of Norman's?)went out with my friend for a while. Tony Wespy was my Auntie's neighbour on Paulet Road. I only remember him as a respectable single bloke.
I am sorry that I can't give you any up to date news about them.
I travel down Prince of Wales Road quite often and I still think that the view from there is spectacular. I also thought that we had the best shopping centre back then. I loved Wilkinson's chip shop, and the bilberry tarts, apple tarts and custards from Tomlinsons. I also remember the novelty of Bates beer off opening, buying threepenny packets of ready salted Golden Wonder crisps and being given a free can opener every time I bought a canned pop. I can remember my Mum's share number for the Co-op, and I still have the foreign dolls I got free by sending packet tops from washpowder bought from 'the Meadah' (Meadow).
Does anyone remember playing in the flag yard and the air raid shelters next to Pipworth School (even though we were constantly told not to by Miss Warren, the Headmistress?)
ALZYMER 31-01-2006, 09:28 PM I remember the big flagstones and we used to sit on them and watch the football match from behind the goal. It was as if we had free grandstand tickets! Miss Warren I remember too, as she had me and Alan Rooker in her office one day for "Waggin it"( playing truant, to non Sheffielders) A few days before, the school bobby had called at our house and like a fool I answered the door!:loopy: Me and Alan had been upstairs playing with a Meccano set all day.The bobby was a small squat bloke with a bowler hat, umbrella and a moustache and when he caught us I thought it was the end of the world! I remember the shelters too, and what we got up to in them is best kept quiet, especially after we discovered girls.

crookesey 18-12-2006, 02:09 PM We left 92 Fairliegh in 1952, I was only 5 but still remember the local shops. Unfortunately peoples names are very vague, I do remember a Mr Moxon who lived in the pensioners flats just round the corner and Sergeant Dusforge who also lived on Fairleigh, can you imagine a police officer living on The Manor today?
My mother and I lived with my grandfather and grandmother Ernest and Nellie Marshall, my mother (another Nellie) went to Prince Edwards and then on to City Grammar (not bad for a Manor lass), thats all folks.
mikeG 20-12-2006, 03:12 PM One of the girls I worked with in Barclays Bank 1960-62, I think lived on The Manor. She was called Carol Inglis.
PhilipB 22-12-2006, 10:49 PM Best man at my wedding came from Manor. Mick Rodgers, used to live on Fretson Road in the 60s.

My Ex Herbert Rowbotham was born and raised on Darcy Close and I recall him and his family talking about the Elgies'. Bert went to Pipworth Road school and as a young man he knocked around with Gordon Wragg from Hastilar Road. If there is anyone out there who remembers him I would be happy to pass all this on to him, he would be very surprised and delighted I'm sure.
sirglyn 23-12-2006, 01:26 PM I never lived on the Manor but I recognise one of the names on the original list.I was at Owler Lane and Hinde House schools with Eddie Lister. He came from the Manor with Brian Moss who was quite a character.I believe he now owns a casino in Florida.
Cruiser 23-12-2006, 10:06 PM I lived on the Manor from '43 and recall some wonderful memories (both hard times and happy times). Left in '58 and returned in '84 - only to leave again in '85 (permanently). I lived on the top end of the Circle and went to Pipworth Rd school - remembering such eloquent folk as : Mick Fletcher, Dougie Maiden, Roy Sykes, Keith Lawrence, Gordon Batty, Freddie Ward Jnr, Mick Booth etc and those wonderful (hic) teachers Mr Moorhoouse, Miss Drinkwater, Miss Warren, Mr Cliff, Jack Pickering etc. Reading some of the anecdotes on previous entries I also remember Jack Fidler (the Fruit & Veg Man) Smedleys the Chip Shop owner (whose grandson is currently a well known professional boxer in Sheffield. One of my funnier moments was being chased up Prince of Wales Rd and Ravencar Rd by Mrs Greaves (Lower Manor Post Office) who thought I was nicking choc from the Post Office - and she caught up with me - doh! (on what turned out to be a wild goose chase hehehehehe) What memories the Manor holds for me and probably many more of the terrific people who lived there during those years.
