I lived on the Manor Estate, Ravencarr Rd, through the 50's and early 60's, and I wondered if anyone knew the following tearaways from around that time, and what they're doing now? : Dave Mossman, John Day, Tony Wespy. all on Paulet Rd. Norman Elgie( Elgy?) also known as 'NoNo' on Darcy Close. Eddie Lister, Brian Jacobs, Jimmy White, on Fairfax Rd and John Connelly, Stanground Road.

I lived on Stonecliffe Rd 50's/60's. Unfortunately memories have faded & so have names but these I remember for many reasons: Wraggs, Noonans, Fosters, Graysons, Weeds, Pallister, Malones on Harborough Avenue. Palmer, Hotchkiss, Bainbridge, Betson, Drabble, Allen, Dolby, Beeby(?) Wilson, Toogood all around Ravencarr and Stonecliffe Road

Don't remember any of those names Jack. Guess like you said you need a good reason to remember some of them. Maybe like got into some mischief together with them or being in their gang etc

I think you're right there Vera, if you didn't get into any trouble or have somebody's mam coming to your door to complain, you didn't tend to socialise much. After all we weren't exactly part of the 'Cocktails before dinner crowd' on't Manor! By the way, does anyone remember that poor soul we all called 'Mad Harry'? He was around thirty years old I think, mentally retarded and walked with a limp. He was always up and down our street going to the shops on Prince of Wales Rd, usually with his poor old mam. I feel so ashamed, now I'm older, at the names we used to call him.

Remembered some more names of people living in houses bordering 'the field' on Harborough Avenue: Swift, Ward, Fenton, Cowlishaw, Hobson, Doherty and a lad we called Ronnie Onions but I can't remember his real name.
I was thinking about the various street traders who operated on the estate in the late 50's early 60's: Craig's ice cream with his trilby in his green and cream Fordson van (I think he had a blue and cream one too), B & C co-op mobile shops, the tripe man in his grey van who used to announce his presence with a hand bell, Fentimans soft drinks, A bloke (who may have been called Mr Fidler) selling fruit and veg from a horse and cart, some old lad who used to sell firewood from a horse and cart in the winter months. There were also two blokes who used to deliver horse manure in an ancient and smelly Dennis lorry. One was the brains, the other one carried the manure in an old dustbin on his back- he had a suspiciously well tanned back of the neck and forearms. The brains had a permanent 'pooh! wot a stink expression' and carried a loo brush for dispersing spillage from the carriers neck and shoulders! Anybody know any more?

I lived on Darcy Close until 1968. I know some of the names you mentioned but only because I knew their relations. I was in the same class as Brian Jacob's brother, Kevan; I was an aquaintence of Jimmy White's sister, Janet; and Brian Elgie (some relative of Norman's?)went out with my friend for a while. Tony Wespy was my Auntie's neighbour on Paulet Road. I only remember him as a respectable single bloke.

I am sorry that I can't give you any up to date news about them.

I travel down Prince of Wales Road quite often and I still think that the view from there is spectacular. I also thought that we had the best shopping centre back then. I loved Wilkinson's chip shop, and the bilberry tarts, apple tarts and custards from Tomlinsons. I also remember the novelty of Bates beer off opening, buying threepenny packets of ready salted Golden Wonder crisps and being given a free can opener every time I bought a canned pop. I can remember my Mum's share number for the Co-op, and I still have the foreign dolls I got free by sending packet tops from washpowder bought from 'the Meadah' (Meadow).

Does anyone remember playing in the flag yard and the air raid shelters next to Pipworth School (even though we were constantly told not to by Miss Warren, the Headmistress?)

I remember the big flagstones and we used to sit on them and watch the football match from behind the goal. It was as if we had free grandstand tickets! Miss Warren I remember too, as she had me and Alan Rooker in her office one day for "Waggin it"( playing truant, to non Sheffielders) A few days before, the school bobby had called at our house and like a fool I answered the door!:loopy: Me and Alan had been upstairs playing with a Meccano set all day.The bobby was a small squat bloke with a bowler hat, umbrella and a moustache and when he caught us I thought it was the end of the world! I remember the shelters too, and what we got up to in them is best kept quiet, especially after we discovered girls.

We left 92 Fairliegh in 1952, I was only 5 but still remember the local shops. Unfortunately peoples names are very vague, I do remember a Mr Moxon who lived in the pensioners flats just round the corner and Sergeant Dusforge who also lived on Fairleigh, can you imagine a police officer living on The Manor today?

My mother and I lived with my grandfather and grandmother Ernest and Nellie Marshall, my mother (another Nellie) went to Prince Edwards and then on to City Grammar (not bad for a Manor lass), thats all folks.

My Ex Herbert Rowbotham was born and raised on Darcy Close and I recall him and his family talking about the Elgies'. Bert went to Pipworth Road school and as a young man he knocked around with Gordon Wragg from Hastilar Road. If there is anyone out there who remembers him I would be happy to pass all this on to him, he would be very surprised and delighted I'm sure.

I lived on the Manor from '43 and recall some wonderful memories (both hard times and happy times). Left in '58 and returned in '84 - only to leave again in '85 (permanently). I lived on the top end of the Circle and went to Pipworth Rd school - remembering such eloquent folk as : Mick Fletcher, Dougie Maiden, Roy Sykes, Keith Lawrence, Gordon Batty, Freddie Ward Jnr, Mick Booth etc and those wonderful (hic) teachers Mr Moorhoouse, Miss Drinkwater, Miss Warren, Mr Cliff, Jack Pickering etc. Reading some of the anecdotes on previous entries I also remember Jack Fidler (the Fruit & Veg Man) Smedleys the Chip Shop owner (whose grandson is currently a well known professional boxer in Sheffield. One of my funnier moments was being chased up Prince of Wales Rd and Ravencar Rd by Mrs Greaves (Lower Manor Post Office) who thought I was nicking choc from the Post Office - and she caught up with me - doh! (on what turned out to be a wild goose chase hehehehehe) What memories the Manor holds for me and probably many more of the terrific people who lived there during those years.

I grew up on the Manor and went to Pipworth Road School. I remember Wilkinson and Smedleys chippie, Bates Beer Off, the Co-op and I still know my mum's share number. I loved going on the fields behind the school, then going into the woods, where we could play all day long and be safe. I remember walking thro' the woods down to Highhazels park at Darnall, then walking all the way back home again as we had no money for bus fare, even if we had money for bus fares we would still walk there and back and spend the money on sweets. Is it just me or were they happier days back then, when everyone was the same, with parents who worked hard for little money. No need for designer this or that or having the best toys or games. We managed to play quite happily with next to nothing, we weren't bored and definately there was no vandalism. I'm glad I grew up then and not today.

Now you're bringing the memories back. I used to play football on all the pitches that were behind Pipworth Road School. I think the bypass from the M1 to the city center eventually went through about four of them on both sides of Prince of Wales Road. Old fashioned football boots with nails sticking up in my feet from the leather knock in studs. The ball made of leather and soaked in dubbin to make it waterproof.....it wasn't... and was nearly always egg shaped.:hihi: Trying to head a wet football in those days was like getting hit on the head with a rubber mallet :D: At a certain time of year the woods at the back of the school were always covered in bluebells  Fond memories of a safer time in Sheffield, especially for kids.

Desmond Crescent was just off Beaumont Road. First there was Alison Crescent, Then Desmond Crescent It was quite a long road, went from Pipworth Road right down in a semicircle down towards Woodthorpe. I lived nearer Pipworth Road. I remember the Woods being full of bluebells also me and my friends knew where to get chestnuts from and where the best blackberry and raspberry bushes were and eating then before they were washed, full of god knows what insects, but back then we did not care. Oooh happy days!!!

To make a long story short, I worked as a croupier at all three Sheffield casino's and got a job working on the cruise ships in the USA. My (now) wife Kathleen, from New York State, was working on the same ship as me as a cashier, and I brought her back to sunny Sheffield, and we got married at the wedding cake in 1984. I then emigrated to the states in 1985, and am still in the casino business working on a casino day ship that operates off the coast of Georgia, which is just up the coast from where I live in north Florida.

Other names I remember from Desmond are:
Barry Moore (lived on thr corner of Desmond/Ravencarr
Fairest (Steve and the twin sisters)
The Birkhills, Colin Smith, the Everitts, Galeys on the corner , opposite them the kingswoods, next the Headfords, then the Halfpennys. Further down there was the big guy on the corer house who used to drive an old Zepher I think with a V8 engine in..
I'll keep thinking of others..

Hi Janet,
How's the legs?
Prince Edward's would have been the last place that I would have wanted to go. I had to be dragged to to the dental clinic there.

Hi again Janet,
Presumably more visits to Prince Edwards.
Don't have many memories of Mr. Haigh, other than his deep voice, "1 o'clock shadow" and he was always "re-arranging" himself.
I see you learnt the lesson that most of us of our generation learnt, that you didn't tell your parents that you had been in trouble at school. If you did it was "double trouble" i.e. a telling off or pushment from your parents.

I didn't have any fillings, but had an extraction once. I had gas, and when I came round I didn't know if I was on this earth or Fuller's Earth. I was then lead into a room with a row of sinks to wash the blood out of my mouth. There were kids crying and blood everywhere:gag:.
It looked like a school for young Draculas.
I never went to the school dentist again.

I think school clinic dentists of that time, scared a lot of people from going to the dentists when they got older, very different from the dentists of today.

I knew a Mick Rodgers when we were at Standhouse in the late 50's.... he lived on Basildene... I lived at 197 Queen Mary. My mates in that part of QM between Payler Close and Queen Mary Crescent were Barry Freeman, Georgie Doors, Eileen Bland, Kathleen Bland, Graham Draycott, Barry Hayes, Keith Chapman from Waltheof and others I just can't remember now.... reading these threads does give my memory a work out though!! Cheers from Oz but made in Sheffield!!

Hi there. Does anyone remember a Ronnie Parks who lived on Pipworth Road and went Pipworth School in the 1950's.We are the Warrenders and lived on the circle for a while before exchanging with the Unwin family and moving to the Manor Park, Harborough Avenue. I used to be friends with Ann Wheelhouse and Lynne Buxton of Fretson Road.

Norman Elgie( Elgy?) also known as 'NoNo' on Darcy Close. Eddie Lister, Brian Jacobs, Jimmy White, on Fairfax Rd and John Connelly, Stanground Road.

Just having a quick read here but can't remember any names. I lived there at Pipworth rd our garden backed on to the seniors school yard remember all those teachers you speak of and all the goings on. oop!! i left in 1948 to go to work my mother worked on the school meals my name was Vera Pope anybody know me

Just recently joined the Forum site and reading all about Manor residents and their experiences etc., I feel that I may know you. You attended Prince of Wales Rd Methodist church and was a good friend of Irene Straw. I lived on the same road as the Straws and was a good friend of Frank, the demon fast bowler at Pipworth Road school. Frank was a couple of years old than me, and used to terrorize us younger kids playing cricket. After all that, am I on the right track?

Hi

Yes I remember Ron Bennet, worked with him between '62 when i started work as an apprentice tiler and '66 when I moved south.

Also remember one of the Buxton girls can't recall her first name (Ann?) but I once crept into the bushes on the Crossways with her for a kiss :hihi: I was a bit innocent then!

The Wards could be my lot.

Yes I remember Avril Coates, she went to school with Ann Wheelhouse. The Buxtons were Mary, Lynne, Annette, Robert and Michelle I think. Ann Wheelhouse lived on The Crossways, and the Buxtons were on Fretson Road, along with some Littlers.

Does anyone remem ber Ann Bramall, who lived on Dawlands Close, off Prince of Wales Road. Also the first self service shop I ever went in was the Maypole which opened on Prince of Wales Road around 1958. We were amazed by having to help ourselves. It felt like we were shoplifting.
