my question is, how do i get it back, also why do i need it, i'm on the internet already aren't i? i never heard of it until he told me i didn't have it, what does it do ?

sorry i won't be able to answer many questions on it as this is all i know. Thanks!

Oh! forgot to add that i've been told i need it as i'm switching from AOL to the phone company service, they couldn't connect me up because of that.

donky7, how can buying a new graphics card realistically speed up windows?

It's more than likely a good disk-clean, defrag, or a little more RAM would do the trick. ;)

Oh yeah, get Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/firefox) instead of IE, much better.

Firefox is VASTLY over-rated IMHO, sure it's good but it's not worthy of all the raving it gets on here.

I tried it for a bit a few weeks back, found it clunky and slow, came back to IE.

Also, the chat room on here doesn't work in FF.

So yeh.

I can access the Chatroom in FF  I never rated it when it was in early development [v0.8], but after getting stung so many times when using IE (even with Firewall, Spyware/Adware Prevention etc.) I decided to give FF a proper go, used it ever since, don't ever open IE anymore. I got to admit tho, if you look at how many security issues there have been over the past year, Firefox far outweighs IE, although IE's were more critical, but I think Microsoft has finally made IE more secure. Ill probably go back to it when they release IE7.

Download Firefox 1.5
It just came out last week so you will see loads more improvements and I just love FF so much. IE is just buggy and full of loop holes and things specific to Microsoft far to much.

First things first, I need to actually understand what you are asking ?

From reading through the text.

Your PC is not slow because you don't have Internet Explorer.

What do you mean when you say there are some photos in a file and they are in Internet Explorer? Do you mean there are some photos which you can view via the internet or something else? Or are you talking about looking for the photos on your PC via Windows Explorer?

I would be pretty certain that Internet Explorer is on your PC, as it is an integral part of the OS. It can be removed, but Microsoft don't like you doing it, therefore make it difficult. From your grasp of IT I am pretty sure it wouldn't be removed.

Who told you that couldn't be connected to broadband because you didn't have Internet Explorer? If it was an ISP I would be slightly worried about given them my money.

A graphics card has nothing to do with speeding up your computer. It does what it says on the tin "Graphics" and unless you are playing 3D Gaming extensively then there is no need for a top of the range performance card.

What will improve a computers performance is memory! More memory will allow you to do several things at once, so instead of waiting till Internet Explorer is loaded before you can open something else, you can now multi-task and open several programs at once.

I'm not too good at trying to explain things...sorry
I'm changing over from AOL to our phone company, it will be Yahoo, a friend hooked up what they sent to us by mail, he did his own the same way, no problem.

ours didn't work, didn't change over, he made the usual phone calls, after days they told him we didn't have IE we needed it for the pc to change over.

he click on the IE icon and some family picts came up where the IT was suposed to be ???? i couldn't understant that, just took their word for it (the man on the phone in India) quite helpful.

I never heard of IE so i don't know what the purpose of it is, all i know is we cannot change service with it ?

he brought a disc to our house from work to try it, some IE thing that was suppose to put it in, it didn't work, he'll be back again tonight after picking some brains at work.

sorry but thats all i can explain...... i'm going to print out all the responses i've had on here and show it to him, maybe that will help.

thank you ALL for you patience with me. Poppins

Chances are Internet Explorer is still there it's just that you're not using it. Check by clicking on

Start -> Run -> type "iexplore.exe" and then hit enter

that's assuming you're on XP.

As for what it is - it's a web browser, it allows you to see web pages like the AOL window you're probably looking at now. I think the latest AOL browser uses IE technology anyway but that makes little difference to you.

I think someone's confused somewhere along the line, you can't put files 'in' IE - they'll be saved on your hard drive somewhere or on a server out on the internet.

As for the phone company telling you that you need IE then that will probably just be because they only support IE - it will work with other browsers but they can't tell you how to set them up as the staff won't be trained in it. Usually it's just a case of installing the other browser and starting it anyway once you are connected to the net.

I know you were just offering help, but when someone is a newbie to computers it can make them even more confused by offering incorrect advice.

Hi Poppins,

It is a shame you are over in the US, as I am sure the problems you are having could so easily be rectified in person by some of the computer geeks off here.

We will try going right back to basics

What operating system does your computer have on it? When you boot the computer you will have a screen appear to say what it is loading. It will which windows version it is.

As me and fnkysknky have both said, you will more than likely have IE on your computer it is just a case of us finding it for you. (The symbol for IE is a blue e)

Also is the internet broadband or dialup?

There are only three main things that can speed up a computer, the Processor, the ammount of RAM, and the size & rpm of the HDD.

Unfortunately Graphics Cards are not one, although, they will help with the speed at which games are played.

As said before, false advice and information is very unhelpful and confusing, unless you REALLY know, you should think twice.

Not having a go here, just giving my opinion :D

poppins, I am totally confused....what browser are you using to view SF? Are you using Internet Explorer (IE), or some other browser?

Whatever the answer is to the above, if you can view SF, then you have internet access, and there shouldn't be a need for you to install Internet Explorer because you can use the browser you're using now.

What do you mean by the change of service didn't work? Of course you can change your service, and you don't need Internet Explorer to do that.
