I keep bank statements and payslips for ever.

I keep reciepts and other bills in a folder and every few months clear out the ones that don't seem important any more.

I discriminate. If I wear a shirt and it doesn't break down on the first wearing, I dispose of the receipt 'la siguiente manana'. Just like that.

Food bills go there and then.

Electrical goods receipts I tape to the bottom of the appliance.

Gas bills and stuff, I save them until my file is bursting and then ween out the ones that are oldest - now and again.

I did this the other day, and I found, not surprisingly, that some were in pounds, shillings and pence.

Anyone like Baxter's Soup?

I keep Bill chained to the sink where he belongs!!! :P

I try to pay off debts as soon as poss, as for pay slips Ive got a huge stack of them in my locker at work and no doubt an even bigger stack in Admin office at work because I never collect them! Im gonna be docked a weeks pay because admin screwed up and payed me twice  not that I noticed, rarely check bank balance as its still in minus figures  my committment to paying off debts does not extend to overdraft

Speaking from experience I now keep bills for about 18 months. You never know when you are going to be asked for money you have already paid, thus finding yourself in a battle with British Gas! Mastercard (don't even start me on that one!)

I have files full of bank/credit card statements/gas/phone/leccy bills, TV Licences(!!??) and things going back over 10 years. Why do I keep hold of these things? I rarely need to look at statements that are more than about a year old at the most. Makes quite interesting reading though to see what I spent money on 10 years ago.
I download bank statements now but I will probably just keep these on my hard disk for years as well now - at least they don't take up any cupboard space.
Am I a sad git or what?

If you are self employed then you need to keep receipts for seven years.

If you aren't then keep them until the guarantee runs out on the appliance.

Other stuff, about a year....if queries arise, then they will do within that time.

Payslips - about two years. P60s are often enough to hang onto.

Most receipts should be kept for 6 years - by law most stuff is still covered up until then believe it or not... Although you don't need a receipt to take something back but it does make life easier.

I keep receipts for everything - stick 'em all in shoe box. Used to be self employed so stems from that I suppose.

I keep bills until i get the next one and providing the new one is correct i then destroy the old one.
Payslips i keep for 6 months.

Ahh, so any theives that might break in and steal your stuff will have 'proof of purchase' if anyone tries to recover the goods!

I keep receipt for electrical Items for around a year and other receipts for varying lengths of time depends what it's for mostly about 3 months except food receipts which I usually dump more or less straight away.

Bank statements and payslips I keep for around 7 years - particularly payslips as I was once told by an independent financial adviser that I worked for as a temp secretary that for tax reasons I should keep them for this length of time as proof of income and tax paid etc. I'm not sure if this is entirely true for employed people (I know it is longer for self employed) but you should definitely keep them for at least 2 years for tax reasons.
