Can anyone recommend a good program to help get rid of the crap on my PC? Tried a total recovery of my PC back to factory settings with the recover disc etc but still get a 'windows message' appearing every 10 seconds or so.

Anything freeware would be great, but if I have to purchase something then so be it!

The one I use is Microsoft Antispyware Beta, and it does the work for me. You can download it here! (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)

Thanks Ann - just downloaded and ran it - said there was nothing found!

The message on my screen at the moment is a pop-up box (that always remains in front of any other window) it is headed "messenger Service" and reads "STOP! WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION. To fix the errors please download registry updates from www.regfixit.com"

If you click ok, it takes you to the site where it will scan your PC and tell you how many errors were found then tell you how much they will charge you for the download to remove the errors.

I get similar messages about every 10 to 20 seconds

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like you've downloaded adware/spyware heaven. Have you installed anything recently like Smiley Central or Kazaa or anything similar.

My advice.....uninstall anything that could be dodgy!

Adaware or Spybot might help.

EDIT: Do you have antivirus and/or a firewall installed....if not, it might be an idea to do so....AVG free antivirus and Zone Alarm free firewall are what I use, although some people don't like Zone Alarm, but not sure of the reason why.

Do you have any pop-up blockers installed? The one on Google toolbar is pretty good ~ I use that together with the XP SP2 pop-up blocker, and very rarely have any pop-ups now.

firefox and spybot block enough pop ups :)
