HI,

I'm paying around £30 a month for 2MB broadband from BT, I've been with them about 18 months now, so i'm well out of the 12 month contract.

I fancy signing up to Wanadoo's 8MB connection @ £14.99 a month (for first 3 months)

I'm slightly worried over the nightmare stories I hear of not being able to sign up with Wanadoo until BT release your phone line, which can be anything upto 3 months after they have cut off your Broadband connection , = = No BroadBand for 3 months *cough...choke....no air....cant...breathe.....*

Ahem..yes, so no broadband would be like, really really bad....

What to do?

What does everyone else do?

Would you advise a different ISP?

Plusnet (http://www.plus.net) £14.99 for 2 Mb or above, they're a local firm as well.

Trouble is, even in these days of modern technology you still practically have to live next door to the exchange to get anything above 512k

I'm currently looking at what ADSL provider to go for after years of being on Cable (we're moving house out of the cable area) so I'm in much the same boat..

Part of the process seems to be spending time on ADSLGuide.com and doing comparisons... reading forum posts about problems, communication, performance, etc...

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/compare.asp is a good place to look.

Personally, I'm thinking about returning to Vispa having been a dial-up customer of theirs off and on when I was in a non-broadband area. It's not perfect but it's not far off..

Just be aware that as with all forums, and competitive markets, trolls abound so you need to take recommendations with a pinch of salt unless you know the person well and trust their judgement.

Best of luck with it...

personally, i'd reccomend Bulldog.... or giointernet ;) I know people who use both and the reports are pretty similar... but they always say theyer better than previous providers they have had (including AOL/BT/Wannadoo and PlusNet)

Erm... Given that I watched the whole Giointernet nightmare unfold I'm guessing that wink was more than a little ironic... or at least I hope it was! :suspect:

I'd look again... as for Vispa... well that took a dive today when some further digging around reminded me of why I was glad to get cable in the first place.. 4 years can do funny things to the memory it seems.

It's a veritable minefield out there. but I think I'm settling slowly for Nildram.. it costs more but given that I need it primarily for business purposes the added reliability seems worth it compared to the tri-monthly hunt for a new provider that used to characterise my earlier ISP experiences.

I am on blueyonder and it's great, you can get 10mb broadband for 34.99 a month, or you could get 4mb broadband for less than half that amount and it's reliable

Well when I first joined a monthly dial up ISP it was with Freeserve (Wanadoo) and I never had a problem, Due to where we live, I had to go with BT if I wanted Broadband 18 months ago, so I did, and I havent had any problem with them either, it's just the price compared to other services seems a bit crap, esp now you can get upto 8MB

My folks are on Wanadoo BB and have never had a problem either

I've heard terrible things about Bulldog, and AOL has always been a no go area after watching it take over my mates pc once.

Wanadoo 8Mb service only operates in restricted areas at the moment...nearest to here(Sheffield) being Leeds/Wakefield.

May be well into next year before 8Mb is available in Sheffield
