Hello all,

I think it's about time I invested in an iPod. I know they have different sized HD built in. I'm after one with the max HD currently available (I think it holds 10,000 mp3's).

Anyone know where the cheapest are for sale? Even if they need importing?

You want a 40GB one?

Cheapest place in the UK is from the "Apple Education Store" but you need to know someone who works in a school to obtain the max discount (Students get a good discount, but not as good as staff!!)

Bobs your uncle there DaB!

Importing is all well and fine, but you'll need to buy the Universal power adaptor kit as well, ontop of import charges it just aint worth it if you can get the schools staff discount

Wait for the new iPod to come out, it's out in April, much smaller than the current one and will be cheaper at £199.

Cheers for the advice folks.

Cycleracer PM me the details.
Geoff... 4gb is way too small for my needs
RPG cheers for that info dude, although I have seen some import ones 40gb for £250, but to buy a 40GB iPod it would be £399 over here.

That's a significant saving just to buy a power adaptor (about £30 and shipping about £20)... still saving £100!

RPG if you could let me know what this staff discount scheme is and what sort of savings are available I'd be grateful!

Cheers all!

I've heard bad things about iPods not lasting more than 18 months, something to do with the internal battery giving up and Apple charging some ridiculous amount to sort it out. That's what has put me off buying one to be honest - would be interested to hear other peoples views who have long term experience with them.

I'll answer this while RPG has a fit of rage about this post (not that he's an iPod lover or anything)

That rumour was apparently false, created by a news website just trying to get itself some attention and publicity.

The wonder of the internet! making rumour spreading so much more powerful!

The 40gb ones are £312.00, and include the UK warantee...

Take up Cycleracers offer ;)

http://www.apple.com/uk/education

Click "Education Store" then cycleracer would have to "search for his institution" order it, then give it you when he gets it to his institution ;)

Well glad that's cleared up - might have to get one now :D

Technically, its a half truth

the real story is thus:

The ipod uses Sony Flat Li-On batteries, which cost around £70 to buy, they have a life cycle of 500 charge cycles (this is where the 18month thing comes from) so if you used it every day from full to flat and charged it every day it'd go within 500 days (like any Li-Ion battery would)

Now Apple do a service where they collect the 'pod, whack in a new battery and send it back for around £80, which isnt too bad at all TBH

DaBouncer
29-02-2004, 11:43
Couldn't you or me buy the batteries and fit them ourselves?

Are Apple gonna wanna check proof of purchase when performing this service, in order to check the pod isn't 'warm' shall we say?

---------------
EDITED SECTION BELOW
---------------
Suppose I better add this section in.
The reason I asked about the proof of purchase is because I may purchase one from Ebay and as you may be aware it's difficult to get proof of purchase from there. Just in case anyone thinks I'm into knocked off gear... I'm not!

Yes, and probably

4 plectrums is all it takes to open up an iPod and replace the battery

How much play do you get from a full charge on average - I want real figures not marketing hype :)

You could try the Apple refurb store:

http://promo.euro.apple.com/promo/refurb/uk/

It's stuff people have sent back, but by all accounts, 99% of the time it is like new, comes with official Apple UK warranties, etc. Ipods usually go for 30 - 60% off retail.

Its only open at 10:00 on Wednesday - and you have to buy quick, since its a bit of a scrum to get them!

If i dont use the light (which I hardly use anyway) about 6 hours, but what people forget is that when the battery meter reads nothing you still have about an hour if you dont fiddle with it

Hmmm, I'd probaby be looking at least 3 hours a day play at least 6 days a week so could probably expect a battery to last over a couple of years - not too bad then :)

Might check the Apple refurb store out :D

How do you log onto the refurb store in the first place? That page doesn't direct you to it? And I cant find an option on the 'store' Page.

Does the link appear on the store page at 10am on wednesday or something?

Yeah that's how it works DaB, as far as I'm aware anyway.

Yep, if you're serious you need to register beforehand. The link (a green button) appears at the bottom of that page at 10am. Recently, some weeks there haven't been any products, just an 'no products' message - I guess it depends how many they get returned each week.

The golden age of the refurb store was when the 2nd Gen Ipod was out, reason: it was crap and lasted about 3 months  so lots of returns :P

3rd Gens are rock solid though  My mate dropped his down a flight of stairs the other day, still working :D

Have had my gen 3 Ipod now since january this year and I must say it is the muts nuts!

Apparently apple have sorted the battery problem on the gen3 so the rumours going round about the apparent battery life are just that.. rumours..

Paid £250 for mine - 15gb and laser engraved for free from the actual apple shop- absolutely mint and I encourage anyone thinking about getting one to do so right now.

i definately am not impressed with these ipods, or the fact that i havent got 10 000 mp3s, and would hate the fact that i have to skip through everything to get to one album, plus i feel i have better things to spend 300 + quid on if i had it, and it woul probaby be epuipment for my guitar

im happy with minidisc, i still get a lot on them, but i dont have to skip though 500 tracks to find one song i want to listen too

just my personal opinion o course, im sure most would love it

RPG

skip through everything?

you can browse by album, artist, or song :P
