View Full Version : Internet Radio
Phanerothyme 27-02-2004, 09:34 Anyone here with the exceptions of Cycleracer and Nutronic do anything with internet radio?
Having spent the last month playing around with internet radio, and having a number of friends and acquaintances involved in music making, it occurred to me this would be a perfect medium for cheaply promoting local talent.
Just wondering what other people are up to, if anything?
ps. Click link below to listen (on all day mostly, except when I am doing file transfers)
DaBouncer 27-02-2004, 10:15 I've been a guest on E-Man Groovin's show last year and he even let me take the rains for half an hour.
I think it's a fantastic way to get promoted, provided you get a decent amount of listeners.
PS Phan.. I'll look over the stuff you sent me, this weekend mate!
I'd love to do an internet radio show, but on dial-up it would be far too slow. I doubt anyone would listen anyway, not many people seem to appreciate my music taste. :(
DaBouncer 27-02-2004, 11:33 I'm sure you could find an internet radio station for your taste in the musical world of apes and primates.
Keep pressing on Sidla... you'll get there. :P :D
Phanerothyme 27-02-2004, 12:01 Well seeing as I have this relay server all set up and working, it would seem a shame to waste it.
I propose, just for fun, to split the day up into hours, and if you want to broadcast for an hour or more, just post a reply here for your slot.
I'll then pm you with the details to connect to the server etc.
You will need a broadband connection to stream data from your player to the relay server.
Winamp and QCD both have Shoutcast PLugins which I have heard work well
Or you can look at www.spacialaudio.com and their SAM 2.7.9 which may be overkill (it will install MySQL server on your machine)
Hmm, I have a load of classic oldies I could play for an hour.... giz a slot mate ;)
I say oldies, I mean loads of stuff from the 60s to the 90s... I even have a couple of bits that have been in and out of the charts in recent months such as Westlife's bastardisation of Barry Manilow's classic "Mandy" *shudder*
fnkysknky 27-02-2004, 14:12 Any particular genres you want Phan or is all welcome?
As Radio Phanny's number 1 listener can I just request no *******ing westlife or Barry ******* Manilow.

PaulTansley 27-02-2004, 17:59 A decent station by a very clever Phan.
very clear and worth a return visit.
Just listened in for about 1/2 hours worth - quality music
I would love a blues and jazz hour! i'm waiting to do that at the drum internet radio station when it gets up and running.
Phans station is great and he shocked me when he was able to meet my request of modern Yiddish music, no one else has been able to do that.

Phanerothyme - I have been listening for last hour to your stream. Excellent chilled out selection for a saturday afternoon.
thanks!

Would it not be possible for people on dial-up to pre-record an hour and then upload it somewhere? Then it could be broardcast any time you fancy.
upholder 28-02-2004, 18:58 Tuned in last night.
My compliments to the chef
Phanerothyme 29-02-2004, 10:31 OK - thank you for your kind words, those of you that tuned in and liked what you heard. Precisely the impetus I need!
To all of you waiting for a response re: broadcasting slots - sorry we have had guests sleeping in the computer room this weekend. I will get onto it
Sidla - yeah, that is a very good idea, for those of you who are on dialup and want to get on the air, then you need to record a programme as an mp3 and get it to me somehow.
No need to make the bitrate any more than 64Kbps.
I have renewed my rental of the relay server - so that we can have up to 30 concurrent listeners now.
I'll cobble together a quick start-up guide and post it here for the non-technical amongst you to get started (it really is very easy) using either winamp or SAM 2.7.9
Give me a few days though, as i am no longer a man of Leisure, and now have to get up and go to work on Monday (Thanks DaBouncer  )
Can you upload a file to the relay server and stream it from there, or do you have to stream from your home pc?
Also, can you set a programme to loop?
Phanerothyme 29-02-2004, 11:01 No Mike, you need to stream the music to the server using a suitable application.
Looping a program really depends on the streaming software and player. For example, you could just create a playlist in Winamp and set it to repeat endlessly, and then set Winamp to stream to the relay server. That would work.
SAM 2.7.9 Allows you to weight songs in order that they are played more/less often, as well as specifiying how often to play a song by the same artists etc.
It is not really designed for live mixing/dj type stuff so much as unattended operation using scriptable playlist automation. (Which is a bit of a head****, trying to make sense of it but there doesn't appear to be any documentation..)
Cheers for that.
I was thinking if you wanted to live mix you could feed the output from a mixer through a compressor to keep the levels safe, then into your pc and stream it from there.
A mate of mine does something similar at his parties - he streams from the decks to computers in different parts of the house, so I guess you could stream to the relay server in a similar fashion.
I'm amazed at how reasonable priced the relay server is - might look into setting something similar up...it'd get me back into using my decks again :)
Phanerothyme 29-02-2004, 11:36 SAM 2.7.9 has some sophisticated 'Audio Pipeline' feature that allows you to apply DSP to the outgoing audiostream, including things like compressors.
It also allows you to switch the stream from the Audio Pipeline within the program to broadcast the soundcard output (i.e what you hear through the speakers).
so If you plug your mixer and decks into the line in on the sound card then you can switch (in SAM) between the Audio Pipeling (mp3s played by SAM) and 'live' broadcast straight from your soundcard.
I have tried this to rebroadcast the R4 news (shhh) but without much luck so far. Lack of good documentation is a drawback here
you can get SAM 2.7.9 here (http://www.spacialaudio.com)
I understand that should you not wish to purchase a full price copy that, somewhere on the internet, there is a keygen available, but of course this would be Software Piracy which I would strongly discourage.
The problem with connecting a mixer straight into a soundcard's line-in socket is that it's virtually impossible to avoid clipping. I've tried this being incredibly careful with the volume controls when mixing and it was still clipping all over the place.
You can mix using very low output levels and tidy it up with software afterwards but I didn't get good results with that, and of course, that wouldn't work in a live scenario.
I think the best solution is to use a hardware compressor/limiter (there are some that aren't *too* expensive) in-between the mixer output and the soundcard input. That way you never get clipping, and the mix sounds bright and loud. I've been keeping my eye out for one on ebay for ages, but they get snapped up really fast.

23 years ago i wouldn't have been born, i'm only 21 so it wasn't me.
