View Full Version : Is there a decent guitar/music shop in Sheffield?
Hi,
I'm not 100% sure this should be in this section but here goes.
I'm looking for a decent music shop/Guitar shop in sheffield that does set ups and refreting work. I have a 1994 Plambay Tidalwave 2 that needs some work doing to it but because it cost a lot of money i'm looking for some recommendations for repairers as i don't want to let just anyone touch it.
also if anyone has a basic idea of how much a set up and refret would cost that would be great too.
Thanks in advance.
kaitykaybell 10-12-2005, 21:35 Try the music shop at broomhill, it does everything else or will put you intouch with who you will need.
I find they help me with everything i need,
luv kkb
Second that one- sheffield music shop has always met my music needs. Sorry I couldn't tell you about guitars specifically as I've always played orchestral music, but they do have a huge wealth of knowledge and people who do work for them.
matthewluck 11-12-2005, 00:23 Theres a guitar shop on London road, never been in and dont know if they'll do what you want. But you can find it at the City end of London road, junction with Boston St
pk014b7161 11-12-2005, 06:44 top of city road big music shop
Lightninboy 11-12-2005, 06:56 For re-frets and such work, most of the shops wont be able to help you. General set ups yes. Are you sure you need the frets doing? If thats the case, then either Stuart Palmer who's the resident luthier at Electro Music in Doncaster or John Shuker who's town centre based. Both are excellent and the shops use these guys for their high end work. Re-fret costs approx £100-£120 depending on style of guitar but let a shop check it out first. It may not need one and may be cured by a simple set up/neck tweak! Hope this helps
Silverjet 11-12-2005, 12:16 John Shuker definitely!!!!
If ya pm me I can give ya his number.
seanyboy 11-12-2005, 15:24 You could try Sound Control across from the old National centre for unpopular music on Paternoster Row. I can't give a review but might be worth checking out if you're looking for one in Sheffield.
willdervish 11-12-2005, 16:46 I'd recommend Steel City Guitars at the bottom of London Road, across from the back of Waitrose. I bought my Fender Mustang there, the guys who work there are passionate and knowledgable, being guitar players themselves. They set up my guitar at no extra charge when I bought it.
Sound Control - Brown street, opposite music center.
Academy of Sound - City road, just (before??) KFC
Steel City - London Road, (below the chineese on the corner, opposite where "Bed" used to be)

Be wary here. I've heard the staff of this shop giving very bad advice to customers about guitars and amplifiers.
There's an Academy of Sound on City Road (Blue tram route) or Sound Control on Paternoster Row in town. I've had work done at both and been satisfied with the results. Sound Control have specialists who know what they're on about and they send stuff out to luthiers if they can't manage it in-house.
I had a guitar assembled out of parts I bought from various shops & websites by a guy at Lost Planet on Burton Street (0114 234 4677) and it's now my number one guitar for gigging.
Good luck.
Re London Road- there are 2 shops fairly near the bottom -
Steel City Guitars - fairly new - can't say as never bought anything there
Wavelength Music - V good - have luthier who comes in "Steve" I think - has done work for me - v good, also excellent advice.

yep, i bought my old guitar from them, great shop run by guitar lovers:thumbsup:
carcrash 27-12-2005, 04:29 I'd go for wavelength music on London Road. As other people have said Steve knows his stuff and some of the guitars he has made are fantastic
hedgewitch 27-12-2005, 08:59 I would always recommend Steel City Guitars!
Sorry, dirtybristow, but I have to disagree - I know plenty of people that have been there and they have always received excellent advice and service. It is the first time I have heard anything bad said about them.
I myself have made numerous purchases with them and have always been satisfied. Their customer service is always excellent - they do actually know their stuff and although their shop is comparitively new, I know from speaking to the staff there and other people, that they have years of experience in the trade. The staff are all great guitarists and you can tell that they genuinely love what they do. They have a reliable repair workshop, do free professional first setups after a purchase, and I know for a fact that they use the luthier Stuart Palmer in Doncaster for anything drastic and they seem to know the guy well.
Sound Control is ok on product, although I've been left unhappy with customer service there and found the place a bit intimidating. I've heard mixed messages about Wavelength, but probably more good than bad.
For anyone who doesn't mind travelling to Doncaster - Electro Music on Copley Road is also a great shop and they have had a good reputation for years. Would avoid the other two guitar shops on Copley Road - Wizard and Backstreet - like the plague! Heard incredibly bad things about both shops...too bad to risk shopping there comfortably...and it looks like there is a family link between the two.
But for me now in Sheffield....would stick with Steel City!
carcrash 27-12-2005, 09:19 I've heard some bad stuff about wizard guitars. They had a shop on London Road a few years ago which always seemed a bit dodgy.
hedgewitch 27-12-2005, 09:55 Don't usually like slating anyone, but after what I heard...which I wouldn't repeat on here....I would warn anyone away from shopping at Wizard and Backstreet. I've also heard that the welsh guy at Wizard and the one who owns Backstreet are brothers.
I also know that the guy at Backstreet used to have something to do with Steel City Guitars but was swiftly "removed" from the business for what I gather was very good reason...apparently the guys at Steel City can't stand him and won't have him near the shop.
Being fair though, I suppose everyone is entitled to have their own opinion of their experience at anywhere they shop though. (Does that make sense? He he. Probably not!)
I do like Electro in Doncaster (the music first shop I ever went to when I started cos everyone seemed to go there) but seen as Steel City is here in Sheffield and they are so good, I'll keep my custom there.
Hi there by the way. Been registered on here for ages but never made any posts. I'd have a nosey today seen as the weather is dreadful and I'm stuck in the house!
carcrash 27-12-2005, 10:27 Putting fender necks on cheap guitars and selling them for £300 more to people who wouldn't really know the difference for instance. I
hedgewitch 27-12-2005, 10:39 LOL
That and a whole lot more from what I can gather. I also heard that Fender took him to court a while ago. I'm surprised the shop is still there.
It's an awful carry on, conning people out of hard earned cash. It's not so bad if you know what you're looking at, but I think most people don't have much of an idea I'm afraid.
Makes me cross, stuff like that!
The frets on my fav electric guitar were so worn that it was sounding like a sitar, and then there was a leak at our rehearsal room and and the neck warped.
I took it to Steve at Wavelength who stoned down the frets and fixed the neck for £55, a good job done. However Glenn (Wavelength's owner/manager) says Steve is giving up working in the shop to become a baker. Worth checking with the shop then...
SpeedwayDan 27-12-2005, 11:05 yes, i've also heard of the bad reports about backstreet and wizard, i went in their london road shop when it first opened and quickly left without buying anything.
and since then i've heard of all the horror stories
hedgewitch 27-12-2005, 11:19 One thing I don't seem to be able to fathom is whether the Backstreet and Wizard "brothers" are actually linked in business now - are the two shops linked? Mind you, don't suppose it matters because I won't be shopping at either! Would be interesting to know though. Anyone know?
I know for sure though that Steel City have nothing at all to do with the Backstreet guy. They have an extremely low opinion of him. Someone I know who lives in Doncaster says he's even copied Steel City's artwork and colours for his shop sign - I mentioned it when I was last in and they don't seem at all pleased about it. I don't blame em!
Yes, I remember now Wizard did once have a shop on London Road some years ago. Wasn't it a fair way up on the left hand side going out of town? Didn't last long there though, did they.
electro in doncaster seems top :p wish i could drive id be there a lot more often.
hedgewitch 27-12-2005, 15:58 Yup - Electro is a great all round shop and sell all sorts! They've been there for years. It's only a short train ride to Donny you know! Steel City is more of a specialist guitar shop, although they do sell other stuff as well. They're both absolutely brilliant shops! If you're in Sheffield though - I'd give Steel City a look if you haven't already.

i would have...but steel city doesnt stock line 6... and i needed a new amp so i got it from electro.
hedgewitch 27-12-2005, 17:36 Fair nuff! Don't fancy the Line 6 stuff myself. I got a nice little 30w Laney amp week before last from Steel City. Lovely for the price.

how can you not fancy that ;) 150watts of pure rock!!!!!!!! yeahh!! gigged it a couple of times and had a few 'ohhh thats a v.nice sound' :) i dunno...i couldnt hear owt coz we didnt have any monitors.
hedgewitch 27-12-2005, 18:20 He he he! Looks great but not for me nowadays. Don't get as loud as that any more! ;) Not in the house.....:D
One of the best amps I ever heard was a 1966 Marshall JMP50 head with 4 x 12 cab. It was fitted with original greenback Celestions. That and a Les Paul.....instant Jimmy Page. Beautiful!
I'm confused - just Googled Steel City Guitars and their website comes up "....in association with Backstreet Guitars" and gives a Donny phone number
http://http://www.steelcityguitars.com/
Checked out Wizard and they say they've left Donny and are now on Ecclesall Rd Sheffield. Bit put off by this : "but please phone first, sometimes we are away on the Harleys, or working on the Narrowboat the owners are currently building !"
Either you're running a shop or you're not.
chopperoli 15-10-2008, 13:34 Talk about a thread revival mate! Back from 2005 lol.
Steel City Guitars has closed down, the one on London Road.
The place on Ecclesall Rd is run by the dodgy guy referred to by the earlier posts in this thread. I wouldn't waste your time. They don't let you try out the guitars in store unless "you're definitely going to buy"! Very bad attitude there. It's a total joke, and way over-priced.
You're far far better off going to Electro in Donny. Honestly. They let you try out the guitars with no obligations, are very friendly and helpful with good prices. HTH
chopperoli 15-10-2008, 13:37 Also, regarding Steel City / Backstreet, I wouldn't trust a guitar site who has PayPal as their only method of accepting card payments.... Looks dodgy to me
Talk about a thread revival mate! Back from 2005 lol.
.......
Yes, and I've learnt one whole tune in the meantime
another recommendation for Steve at Wavelength - done lots of work for me - knowledgeble, friendly and good value.
I rang Wavelength and they said Steve (I assume) is only there on a Saturday so I'll probably ring back then. I've just fitted a set of strings so I'll wait until they need replacing before looking at the frets, it still plays ok, at least as well as I can make it do!
Johnson77 23-08-2010, 14:07 I wouldn't recommend anyone go near "Wizard" guitars. I'm having an absolute nightmare with them, but I can't go into great detail at the moment because we're very likely to be heading for litigation.
I will update with all the gory details when I can.
Cheers, Mick.
Pinnacle PAT 23-08-2010, 17:51 Try Millingtons at the top of the Moor?
accadamy of sound on city road has shut try sound ideas on langsett rd
Wavelength Music London Road
Ask for Steve He did good repair on my Acoustic guitar:hihi:
corsabird 24-08-2010, 07:57 manor top on city road
Paul2412 24-08-2010, 08:06 There's a place at West One that sells guitars, never been in myself but it always looks reasonably busy. It's at the other side of the Plaza to Revolution on the right hand side.
wednesday1 24-08-2010, 08:31 The Sheffield Music Shop on Ecclesall Road, just down from the Porter Brook pub.
There's one opposite Netto on South Rd, called the Guitar Shack.
I haven't seen any of his work, but he does repairs on the premises.
carlguitar 25-09-2011, 18:41 Best guitar shop in Sheffield is Richtone.
Experienced staff (i.e not ones who think Tokai's are made in the same factory as Gibsons as one salesperson tried to tell me at a guitar shop on London road!!.... muppet!), good prices, great range of guitars (and other things too).
Sarkysod 25-09-2011, 19:07 My vote goes to Real Time Music (http://www.realtimemusic.co.uk/), friendly knowledgeable staff who treat you right. The shop is not the biggest in the world, but the customer service makes up for it.

another vote for richtone!
F1nutter 29-11-2011, 13:39 Just been looking for a guitar for my daughter for Christmas. Went to wavelength on London Road 1st, what a waste of time, no help whatsoever, just appeared totally disinterested.
Then went to Richtone on Broadfield Road - what a contrast! Couldn't do enough to help and left totally satisfied. I know where my money will be going!
Almosthuman 30-11-2011, 15:18 cant believe no one has metioned richtone music www.richtonemusic.co.uk

mousemoose 03-12-2011, 18:30 +1 for richtone!
F1 nutter - you must have had them on a bad day mate? I found Wavelength to be really good!
I'm new to Sheffield and went their through recommendation to buy an acoustic. They spent loads of time with me helping me to pick the right one for me (as opposed to the highest value one) - I thought they really knew their stuff!
I've not been to any of these other stores so I can't really comment on them, but I'd recommend Wavelength anyway! :)
The guy who runs Wavelength - Glenn, I think - is a bit of a liability to his own business. I went in for stuff the other day - an arm for a Strat and some bits-box type stuff - and he was, frankly, rude and unhelpful. I wasn't going to spend a grand on a guitar on that occasion, but if I find that sort of wedge in my pocket I shan't be putting it behind the counter at Wavelength. Steve Gaines - the one with the lazy eye who does the repairs at Wavelength - is very helpful, patient and willing to help out, and I'd use him again. He did some rewiring on my Guild, which I was pleased with.
Richtone is a more serious operation when it comes to stock and selling stuff. I think they make a lot more of their money from mail order than shop-floor sales, but they're quite helpful. The only tiny whinge is their till system, which seems to have most of the staff foxed! This shop is actually what Sheffield has needed for a long time, which is to say that they stock a good range of stuff, sell quickly (watch the prices on their second-hand gear), and provide a good service.
Wizard is a good place to look for unusual stuff, but I always feel like their price-tags are a starting point for negotiation and so, on paper, eye-wateringly expensive. They do seem to over-charge for small stuff like strings. If I had a hatful of cash, I'd go there and have a look around, then probably go and spend my money in Richtone...
yorkiepudd 31-12-2011, 14:41 Well we went to wavelength and 2 words spring to mind - unhelpful and disinterested.
Richtone, on the other hand, provided a service that exceeded all expectations! We went for a guitar for my teenage daughter with quite specific requirements. They looked, found, showed and demonstrated. Then looked some more and played, allowed us to mess them about, and still laughed with us. We spent about £300 but were treated like we were spending a lot more, and got some discount to boot.
They have certainly got all my future custom.
Glad you had a good experience as well, yorkiepudd. I think Richtone appreciate the value of repeat business and so, like a sort of Guitar-based John Lewis, are willing to put a bit more time into you as a customer.
I am a big fan of Real Time Music in West One personally. Hooray for the wall of Gibsons!
I'd have to agree with the comments about Wavelength. I went in there to buy a beginner mandolin and was just pointed in the direction by the owner. Luckily one of the other staff actually came back and helped me choose a quality one. I've been in since to try and buy other smaller items and found the owner to be obnoxious, even making fun of my questions or trying to sell me the wrong items.
addylewis 06-01-2012, 18:25 Good to see nobody's recommending Wizard...bloody horrible, also - don't ask them to set your prized guitar up...they'll move the pickup which has been in place for 15 years and NEVER been touched and completely **** the sound balance on it
DrugCrazed 07-01-2012, 16:07 I've used the one on Ecc road (just getting strings and picks though), and wouldn't really recommend it, mostly because they seem to be under the impression that changing tunings can damage your guitar. If they're silly enough to believe that, I wouldn't trust them.
Wavelength has been round for years, all the guys that work their are knowledgable and honest, they are all players not salesmen. I would recommend them everytime.
