So what everyone's best way of getting through a hangover??Obviously not drinking to much is the best way and i know the only person to blame is yourself when you feel like death the next day,but after 3 nights of partying i'm kinda feeling a bit rough and just wonder how everyone else gets on the day after the night before and if anyone had some magical cure up their sleeve.
Think i better go and lay down now!

I'm thinking we have some experts in this field so I've moved this to "Ask an Expert!" ;)

There are several ways I feel are effective:
Take 2 Painkillers
DO NOT have any contact with a woman (Constant Nagging Makes It Worse)
Drink More
Drink Even More
Start A Fight (helps some)
I personally like to mix 1 & 2 together

1. Tomato juice
2. Soda water
3. Tap water. Lots of rehydration
4. Eat a banana - your body needs potassium
5. Vitamin C tablet - it needs that too
6. Come to the Classic Rock Bar to top it up......

Either just drink Vodka an redbul (redbull is perfect for stopping the hangover at the source).

Or drink PLENTY of water before sleep... you need rehydrating!

Hair of the dog works for some too!

Thanx for the advice guys!
Its 2 days now since the last party and i'm still feeling a little rough, think its time to ease of the alcohol intake a bit.(yeah right!)
Think next time i'm out on the town i'll be try drinking plenty of water before bed, talk to a few people and this seems to work.Hair of the dog is my usual way of shifting the hangover, but theres no way i could have faced a stella yesterday,or even today!!!

Cheap tomato cup-a-soups always do it for me - they are basically sugar and salt in water, so they work like rehydration salts, but taste (a bit) nicer.

A couple of paracetamol
A glass of pure orange juice to wash down the bacon and egg sandwich.

When I worked at the garage the sales for the local greasy spoon went up everytime there had been a works do. Someone also brough in the pepto bismol for those really suffering

After a good session I drink a pint of water as soon as I get up, sometimes more. Two painkillers for me ed and then a good fry up works wonders.

when i worked on a bar in the morning after heavy nights out i used to nick a baileys and creme de menthe with ice (yes in the same glass, looks rancid but tastes lovely) hair of the dog and that.

Take two painkillers BEFORE you start drinking - it's worked for me, be it only for the majority of times, for nearly 50 years. Oh, and have a tomato juice with your last drink.

A good fried breakfast, basically get the salts back in your body, and lots of water and orange juice, then go back to bed.

Nice idea, but if I'm sober enough to think of that then it's unlikely to be my last drink.

A doctor friend of mine once passed round some tablets that they give to babies who have the runs. They are meant to rehydrate you so if you take a couple during the session you are less likely to de-hydrate which is the main cause of hangovers. Can't remember the name but they worked.

Alternatively, if you've already got a hangover Underberg is very good.

if there actually was a cure for a hangover, we'd all know it by now, but:
drink plenty of fluids and or oral rehydration salts.
take paracetamol and ibuprofen (do not exceed paracetamol stated max dose - V.Dangerous)
lie still
sleep

I've not had a hangover for a long time, but my remedy was as follows:

You need to replace into your body all the stuff that alcohol destroys............

Lot's of water (pints of........bottled if you can, but I always used tap)
Brewers Yeast tablets (cheap, contain Vitamin B and Amino Acids)
Bananas
Tomato Juice (dash of Hendersons)
Fry up
Sleep (if poss)
Lie on settee watching a comedy video (alcohol is a depressant)

Failing any of that, a few Librium should sort you out!

A glass of pure orange juice to wash down the bacon and egg sandwich.

Theres no need to drink alcohol to have fun - have a nice glass of orange instead, or appletize (did you know its 100% apple with no added sugar or anything!) Youll lose weight and never get hangovers and never do anything silly like throw up or say silly things.

You don't need alcohol to have fun but that's a poor excuse for not drinking! :nono::nono::nono:

If you wanna lose weight then do some exercise!:clap::clap:

Yeap, you can do some pretty silly things when drunk but that part of the fun... especially when you get to remind the person!

Best cure for a hangover? Water, food (anything will do including cold kebab, pizza, chinese etc), Nurofen and in extreme emergencies just get back on it!

There are many good reasons for drinking
And one has just entered my head
If a man cannot drink when he's living
How he h*ll can he drink when he's dead?

Was all set to ask for advice on this score but that nifty "search for a previous topic" button thing saved me from the mod scorn.. :D

Anyway.. was wondering about prevention better than cure stuff and was thinking...

Does anyone have a good rule of thumb of things to be doing such as ratios of water to drinking, or food to prepare with so that you don't get an absolute screamer the next day...

.. any obvious responses like "drink less" will be treated with the scorn they deserve.. :P

Thx :)

I find that if I eat something with lots of salt in it on way out (McDonalds fries do the trick) and then have a couple of pints of water before going to bed I'm usually fine next day. I usually drink a can or two of coke and have a big bacon, sausage and egg the next morning just to make sure :D

It's a while since I've had a hangover, but I was told the following by a lecturer when I was doing my degree - I studied Biochemistry and the guy was an expert in hydration metabolism, so I THINK he knew what he was talking about.

And the only time I've not followed the guidance was them time I had a hangover the size of Mount Sheffield...:-)

The hangover is a combination of the following - dehydration, low blood sugar and ketone / aldehyde build up in your body due to the serious wrecking you've just done to your metabolic pathways...so...

Eat something before you start.
Before leaving the house, line up the following : 2 paracetamol - take care with the dosage, as someone's pointed out - and lay out a glass of coke to let it go 'flat' while you're out. Also a glass for some water....and a banana. banana for potassium, coke for sugar. I sometiems put a pinch of salt in the coke.
Reason for paracetamol? Well, although it is more stressful on the liver, it's less bad on your stomach than aspirin or Ibuprofen.
During drinking, try and have a non-alcoholic, still drink on occasion.
When you get home, take the painkillers, the flat coke and a couple of glasses of water.
Open the bedroom window and go to bed.
When you get up, drink more water, or some orange juice, and get something to eat.
If you need to sleep, sleep some more.

Watch out for caffeine. If you drink red bull it will speed your metabolism up and push the alcohol through your system faster, so it may make you feel rougher in the short term.

Also, don't plan on driving. Chances are if you have a hangover you could also still be over the limit, and anyway your brain is so fried that you wouldn't be safe anyway!

As for drinks that look disgusting but taste nice, my non-alcoholic tipple of choice is a Muddy Water. Britvic Orange made up to a pint with Coke. Don't try it with fresh orange - it curdles.

:-)

If you can, drink a pint of water before you go to bed.

Then, when you wake up, head spinning, stomach churning, sip a bit of water, then have a bottle of Irn Bru (it's made in Scotland from Girders, dontcha know...), followed by a packet of ready salted Seabrooks crinkle-cut crisps. This should stop the shaking!

This is (kind of) the science bit...concentrate:

Obviously, the water before bed helps prevent some of the dehydration that occurs. Alcohol also lowers blood sugar, so the Irn Bru replenishes that. Dehydration makes you lose salt as well as water; the crisps help that...they also provide longer lasting carbohydrate for when the Irn Bru kick wears off!

Ta-daa.

Best tip ever

Before you go to bed, force yourself to drink a pint of water and 2 paracetomols - guaranteed no hangover.

The times I forget to do it is when I wake up with a headache so there's the proof!!

Comiserations on the hangover, I used to be exactly like that, absolutely awful, felt like someone had been rattling my cage while I was asleep then feelin like I couldnt do anything.

What i did find after a search on google was this hangover cure, its called (appropriately I reckon) Hangover-Over. It was a bit wierd as you just take the tablets with your first two drinks. And to my surpriise and absolute elight I didnt get an ounce of a hangover. Dont know if you can get them in the shops, I got mine from the website below, arrived the next day and cheap as chips I reckon £8 for 4 hangover cures!

Heres the sit eif you interested

Other than that, plenty of water and - as mentioned above - Lucozade sport to rehydrate.

I just posted this on another forum and thought since it was something that's taken me a while to write and research, I thought you guys might benefit from it too. So here goes!

Seriously though, I've been know to be a bit of a drinker, but I am an absolute sod for hangovers cos I'm lazy and unfit. I'll share my faves and others I know of. Irn Bru cos the iron salts get you liver working to process the toxins. Pepsi max works for the same reason.

Here's some others that have worked for me:

Cabbage soup (1/2 cabbage 1 carrot 3 sticks of celery 1 clove garlic 1 bay leaf sour cream salt and pepper) chop up and boil up!

If aromatherapy is your thing, evening primrose oil is good. works as capsule but more efficiently if massaged into chest, convince someone female to do it for extra fun.

The Great English Breakfast (dunno why)

Vitamin tablet, as the extra time awake depletes these resources.

Watch something funny, laughing expands lungs and pumps the extra oxygen to your brain, clears you out.

Aromatherapy 2: Peppermint essence. a few drops of it into a glass of water is the best way to get it into your system, it's a great invigorate

Evelyn Waugh's (Brideshead revisited) favourite cure: 1 glass champagne 1 cube of sugar, angostura bitters and ground black pepper. dunk cube in the bitters roll in pepper and the let dissolve in the champers

Reflexology: massages and squeeze all your toes and soles of feet. pay extra attention to the big toe, where the head is supposedly centered

Exercise, I know you'll not be up to it after but regular exercise means blood flow is better and hangovers occur less

An early remedy from roman times is 2 raw eggs 1/2 a cup of olive oil and 2 crushed garlic cloves. mix well in a glass and drink. i suppose if it doesn;t work at least you'll be left alone

Chelates, also know as antioxidants are top for hangovers, cabbage is one I've mentioned already. some other popular ones are charcoal and vitamin C, charcoal isn't the tastiest option tho.

If you've got some spare cash try and buy a headset that sends alpha and beta waves (NOT radiation) though your brain. My sister swears by hem and they stim, ulate nerves impulses, creativity and thought processes too!

A good cuppa. Antioxidants again

Deep breathing: oxygenated blood is our friends, esp if you're a smoker with a hangover

Herbal Teas: It's all about consistently topping up vital fluids

A remedy I learned from an Australian girl down in Newquay was that before you go out, you should eat salted mash potatoes and drink a glass of milk.

A bloody Mary: not only hair of the dog but tomato juice is great for vit C

Lots if sleep (10 hours)

Isotonic drinks: they're all the same so choose your preference

bananas: not on their own cos low in Vit C so top up with fruit juice

When I was in Galway for race week I had an Irish breakfast which is their cure: A plate of oysters and a pint of Guinness. Full of zinc to restore natural equilibrium

When I was at the Matterhorn with some skiers we had a swiss snowball to recover (also known as the snowball from hell) 1 shot vermouth, 1/2 teaspoon of honey, 1 whisked egg white, 2 shots of absinthe. Mix with Ice and soda and drink in one, kill or cure IMHO.

John Calvert (one of the 20th centuries greatest drinkers, unlike me) had this one (not for the faint hearted) 1 teaspoon of these: Epsom salts, ground ginger cream of tartar. Mix until dissolved with water and knock it back (bravery required)

Coffee: caffeine is good coffee bad. drink in slight amounts, otherwise your blood pressure will rise and your head will pound, plus you'll pee more as it is a diuretic.

Cornflakes and Ice cold milk, shock to the system and pretty good for you

If you fill your stomach with alcohol, insulin production nosedives, this reduces blood sugar which is why you'll feel exhausted. Make sure you eat lots before during and after drinking

Aromatherapy 3: Eucalyptus oil. put a few drops in a bowl of hot water, towel over head. You'll go to no hangover heaven.

Sex: If you can anyway. Increases blood flow (more to certain places ) and it kick starts you back into proper functioning

Essential Oils from fish: cod liver oil tablets are your friends. Kippers for breakfast do the same job but smell more, your house mates might hit you.

An American cure I had when in Detroit: 1 egg yolk 1 tablespoon of Worcester sauce 1 shot of port salt and pepper to taste. in a Glass, as always, down in one (might make you retch but thats helpful too)

Samuel Pepys's remedy was adding 2 teaspoons of sugar to a glass of Orange juice. Anti oxidants and sucrose, need I say more?

I know I've mentioned Vit C already (lots) but I'll point out it's really hard to OD on so, get some Vit C powder, you can take up to a gramme a day, might with orange juice for somethign that will sober you up in 5 mins guaranteed*

Go to a sauna, make sure to take water with you though to replace fluids or you might feel worse

When I was in Mexico for day of the dead, their cure was to cut up 2 slices of lemon and rub one in each armpit, the Vit C is absorbed fast and it works like deodorant too (not much though)

Andrew's Salts: the main ingredient in alkaseltzer

Even Granny Smith had a cure! 1 glass of milk 1 of white wine 1 tablespoon of honey grated lemon zest a pinch of Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. Heat the milk and wine until curdled. add the spices stir, strain the bits out and drink (actually pretty good if severe, otherwise it's not worth the effort)

Milkshakes: lines your stomach, if you're too squeamish for some of the others I've posted, this is for you.

Hope that keeps you going! Glad to share my wisdom on this matter. I need to learn when to STOP drinking, until that day, my cures will help me suffice.

Wilf

When you get home from a good night out, to prevent hangovers drink water, as much as you can possibly drink. at least 2 pints.

The water hydrates your body while you sleep working against the dehydration the booze causes giving you the hangover

Cooked breakfast, bacon egg etc. Or just a bacon butty if you cant face the full monty.

I have read some scientific support for this, something to do with substances in the bacon I think, or maybe the protein.

Plenty of water and some rehydration salts will help, as will some fructose in the morning (best in the shape of a banana, as they contain potassium and you need that too).

Remember not to take aspirin or ibuprofen until and unless you have eaten as they can damage the stomach lining if taken without food. That said, ibuprofen is probably best for those who can take it- with paracstamol running a close second.

Plenty of water and some excercise, walking or swimming.

Sucking mints can help stop you feeling sick whilst you are recovering slowly.

I hear that most people who have died when taking E have died because they drunk too much water and drowned.

Maybe someone with some medical knowledge can confirm how much water is safe to drink?

Here is an article I wrote about hangovers 6 years ago after reading an excellent feature about it a science magazine : -

The amount of water you need to drink is proportionate to the amount of strong alcohol you hae drunk- i.e. if you've been on beer all night you'll need much less than someone who was downing neat whisky with no soft drinks in between. Just don't go overboard. A couple of pints of water is really all the water you're going to need, unless you drank a bottle of neat spirits in which case water isn't going to sort your hangover anyway.

The case of ecstasy and fluid poisoning is an interesting one though. It's to do with hypervolaemia- getting just too much volume in the blood, by drinking too much liquid. Es increase body temperature and people drink water to reieve this, but too much water in the blood causes a dilution in sodium in the bloodstream. Sodium is important in regulating muscle contractions and maintaining the fluid levels in the tissues, so too little sodium causes fluid to leach out into the tissues causing them to swell. If the brain swells as a result of this then you are in REALLY deep doodoo. If you're lucky at this point you are already in A&E, because that's the only place you have a chance.

It's harder to get hypervolaemia in normal circumstances, as your body tells you when you've drunk enough water, and you tend to be sick if you totally fill your stomach with water. This is one of the body's self protection systems that works really well- unfortunately drugs and alcohol can confuse the body on this one, so sticking to a couple of pints of water won't harm anyone (unless you've already got a serious kidney problem, and you'll already know about that).

I always try and remember to drink a couple of pints of water when I get back in from a night out. I find that drinking water the morning after doesn't help nearly as much,

I'll second this. It's very sensible to drink a half pint of water in between every alcoholic drink, and very effective at preventing hangovers. Drinking a pint in between pints is not dangerous (as long as you haven't taken Ecstasy). The Ecstasy prevents your body from excreting the water you drink hence the build up and eventual problems. As Medusa said, it is virtually impossible to get hypervolaemia unless you have taken some kind of drug or there are other problems.

My best ever hangover cure is to take an alka seltzer XS before bed and one in the morning as soon as you wake up. This kills all but the most evil hangovers. I swear by it and usually have it as my final drink after a big night out. It'll probably still help you now too. Also, banana smoothies. Real bananas are a natural antidepressant and the milk rehydrates you. BoL!

The only way I ever found to cure a hangover is to sweat it out. I used to cycle a lot on saturdays and sundays in thepeak district for exact;y this reason.

The only thing that I think will ever work, more booze. Unfortunately I'm at work too so I can't use that one for a few more hours yet, so I'd go with the Alka seltzer, and coke. Coke acts as a cleanser and kills bacteria in your stomach

Vitamin C is severely depleted after a skinful so get one of those innocent smoothies or just some normal fruit.

Dehydration is also there so drink water.

easiest answer is - DONT DRINK!

But if you've drunk a lot have a spoonful of honey or your favourite jam BEFORE you go to bed..

It wont help, but if you're sick it will taste better :hihi:

Having not drunk alcohol in nearly a year I can tell you that the avoidance of alchohol alone is insufficient protection from a hangover, I'm afraid. Your best chance is keep yourself well hydrated.

As for curing a hangover once it starts, the only effective method I've found is to get drunk again, but that brings its own problems.

well... hangovers can be quite annoying.

however, they are usually a sign of a great night out!

anyways, try eating before you go to bed, and drink 2 glasses of water as well. and then just sleep and the next morning eat bread only, nothing too heavy as you might not be able to keep it in (depending on what and how much you had to drink the night before).

a cold shower also works wonders for me... but have had people disagreeing with me there.

hope it helps,

Fabian

I always try to start drinking water instead of wine or whatever for the last hour that I'm drinking (which works fine unless I'm so far gone that I don't remember!) Then I'm usualy fine the next day.

In my student days, I always used to swear by tomato soup and twister ice lollies - they seemed to do the trick for me!

For a true 'can't get out of bed without barfing' hangover - it's got to be dry toast and black coffee.

Honestly, got me out of bed at 5pm for another evenings drinking (well, orange juice, but at least I could take fluids!)

Lucozade

Avoid coffee as it is a diuretic and will not help the fluid imbalance in the body.

Banana smoothies, plenty of water and vitamin B tablets helps with the shakes.

prevention is better than a cure! What works everytime for me firstly is minimum of a pint of water or juice before going to bed. If you are drinking spirits or mixing drinks take 2 paracetamols with the drink before bed. If you are drinking mainlly lager or cider then take the paracetamols at start of night or during the night while you are out as taking them before bed doesnt work as well for lager and vice versa for spirits. This is jus my own experience and it works perfectly for me as i no longer get bad hangovers just feel bit tired next day - except for when i fall asleep and forget to do the above, whereas i used to suffer hangovers from hell.

Also may well be a coincidence but i found in past that drinking anything and everything blue coloured left me hangover-free the following morning! Drinking nothing but vodka and mixers helps keep your head clearer too.

Yes have to agree here, I am having a diet coke now, to relieve my slight hangover from lastnight, then I shall follow it up with another can this afternoon.

Then spend the rest of the afternoon at work, "burping" out loud.

Then follow it up tonight with some more lager, and the cycle continues.

Not that I've ever got over a hangover with either of the above, but I tend to agree that that would work.

I normally only ever get a hangover if I've been on an all dayer, so most Sunday and Monday mornings to be fair.
