View Full Version : What shape can you see in this image?
We need to settle an argument about seeing an off white shape inside a pure white background.
Can you see it in this Web page? (http://img30.photobucket.com/albums/v90/SheffieldForum/b7d443ac.png)
Look long and hard before answering the poll.
No cheating peeps. If you do feel compelled to check it in Paint Shop Pro, then at least answer the poll first.
This all stems from an discussion/argument we had in chat. I said that 24 bit colour depth is the maximum the eye can distinguish between, and 1 bit difference between 1 colour channel would not be noticed by most people over the age of 10.
John on the other hand claimed he could see the shape in the picture. I suspect that this is psychological, because he knows the shape is there.
Very geeky I know, but please help us settle this discussion.
Looks like a rectangle to me.
rectangle - but I cheated   :D :D
ncrossland 27-02-2004, 07:03 may also be down to your monitor quality, and its gamma / contrast, as much as your eyes!
I remember reading once that the number of colours the eye can distinguish between is much less than the 16million.
Looks like the people who cheated ...STILL got it wrong !!!
:p
It's a circle ... and you can only just make it out ...
jackthedog 27-02-2004, 08:31 Yeah, it's a circle, but I had to cheat too. Really couldn't see anything without a bit of photoshop help.
FYI I did vote first though, and I said their was nothing there.
cant see ought in browser or in imaging.
only way i found out wht it was by - ctrl A and it showed up as a rectange!!
wierd!!
jackthedog 27-02-2004, 09:10 Those who said it was a rectangle just cheated, and not very well!
I'm pretty sure those who said it was a circle cheated too, cos i cant believe anybody can see such a tiny difference!

Hmm. I know it's there now and fully cannot make it out.
I'm with you on this one so far, Sid.
You can just make out a very faint difference in shade between the inside and outside of the circle.
Look at the edges ...
Of course it helps if you know there is a circle there and you fiddle with the contrast / brightness on your monitor.
Pressing ctrl-a will only outline the .png image (which is inface rectangular).
The image on the .png is circular tho.
jackthedog 27-02-2004, 10:43 I did adjust my monitor first as I have it set quite dark, but that didnt help.
We do have some kind of setting on these machines that makes them very dark, in a vain attempt to try and match print quality.
Might be why I cant see it. Had to adjust the image loads though before I could make it out.
I think I've won this one guys. :D
I can't see anything at all and don't have photoshop on this machine. I voted that there was nothing there but clicked print and it prints out a circle but I guess that would be cheating;)
Nope still can't see owt same as last night.

Yes it is T !!
The white rectangle is only the outline of the .PNG image (all 2d image formats are generally rectangular).
It's what is *ON* the .PNG image that they are talking about.
I refer you to what I said earlier in this thread ...

PaulTansley 27-02-2004, 20:15 Nothing to see on my screen apart from dust.
I'll have to give it a clean soon.

Don't worry, neither can I. It only proves my point, most people's eyesight is not good enough to see the subtle difference.
It seems Jamie and John are X-Men.
