View Full Version : Peter Kay...Overrated?
Mosherchik 26-02-2004, 18:19 Peter Kay...the comedian of the moment has topped the most overrated poll by Chortle readers.
http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/feb04/rate.html
With Only Fools and Horses topping the most overrated sitcom poll (sorry Sidla but I agree with them there! :P )
Opinions? If any! Jim Davidson made it to number 2! which is apt being as he is the biggest 2 I can think off! I thought he'd fallen down a pit! should be pushed down one at any rate. Stick to Big Break u muppet!

I've never really been a big fan of Kay, his accent puts me off. I can see why others find him funny though.
I wouldn't say OF&H is overrated, it's had some very funny episodes in the past, and I can't think of one episode which doesn't make me laugh even now. (Except for the new ones, but they shouldn't count...)
In my opinion...NO WAY!
Peter Kay is brilliant. I wet myself when I first saw his stand up, he is a genious.
I can't believe Eddie Izzard came in at number 3!!
Who are the voters on this site!
DaBouncer 26-02-2004, 18:24 Peter Kay is a comedy Genius... like a diamond bullet through the forehead!
He's deffo not overrated and should be given a knighthood just for how funny he is. Now Roy Chubby Brown, he's without a doubt... the WORST comedian I've ever had the misfortune to see.

i think his accent is what makes him funny. Really adds to his jokes. brill!
Hmm as for Izzard. Used to really like him, till i saw him at city hall. Was a bit miffed as he pretty much did the dress to kill script, which was out 2 years earlier. Still made me laugh, but as everyone had paid £16 to see him, you'd think he'd write some new material.
Hang on! just checked the table, and billy connoly's in there too. who are these miserable sods that vote? Are the ill? Think they could do with a tickle to cheer them up a bit.
I agree with Andy78. That Billy Connolly is in the poll AT ALL negates any value of it. Also, it annoys me with these things that actual numbers aren't quoted - how many people voted in this poll? How was it counted? Were people given a list of comedians and asked to rank them or given a free choice of who they think was over-rated.
With regards to Peter Kay - I've only seen a few phoenix nights and didn't find them especially funny but I did see his live at the Bolton Albert Hall gig and that is hillarious.
Nomme
I wouldnt say hes overrated, hes just popular
Phoenix Nights is especially funny, starring our very own Toby Foster (Whose comedy timing in Series 1 Ep. 5 is impeccable!)
PK's live stuff cracks me up everytime I watch it, because its just so true to northern life
To all of you who thinks Peter Kay is overrated, get a life.
You are so far from the truth, he is fantastic and I don`t like normally like comedians but I understand his sense of humour and he`s a Lancastrian you cant get any better.
He is so funny and I have introduced him to my father in law who thinks he`s wicked to.
I can`t stand Chubby Brown he`s dirty on legs and I can`t understand Billy Connelly when he tells jokes but his documentarys are good.

No way!!!! I guess its personal opinion but he shouldn't be in that chart! neither should Billy connelly.
Phoenix Nights is superb ... but unlikely to improve after a 3rd series. It's hard to top The Captain and Das Boot or "get back you ******** - ill break yer legs" from series 1. :D
The trouble with Peter Kay is that he's pretty much a one trick (albeit a good trick) pony - "northern folk" - and it's getting a bit thin now. 5 years ago it was very fresh... "comin' in your ears!"
Our Toby doesn't need to emulate him in the afternoons either. "Shabba" :( Toby - you're much funnier when your doing your stuff instead of PK's
I saw Eddie Izzard at the same gig as Andy78, and I nearly fell asleep. Izzard has lost it too. I once actually did fall asleep watching Ben Elton do the same "Mrs Thatch - ooo I'm a bit farty" material for the umpteenth time:D
Now then - in my alchohol induced state, who can remind me of the name of the Jewish lad with the guitar? I nearly pished myself. :)

Demetri !!!!!!!
jackthedog 27-02-2004, 08:12 Only fools is totally over-rated. It had it's day years ago, it should have long since died a quiet death. Their not wrong there.
Kay and Izzard are, however, very funny. And i dont know anybody that says otherwise (except those earlier posters, obviously).
That poll was a load of crap.
If you think that Izzard is funny now you should have seen him before he decided to break his rule of never ever ever going on the telly. Your head would have exploded, 'cos he's just a now pale shadow of his former genius.
how can you not laugh at him he is the best comedian i have ever seen. other than our scottish guy (billy)
so funny!!
fnkysknky 27-02-2004, 13:10 Peter Kay and Only Fools & Horses are both amazing and in my opinion definitely not overrated.
fnkysknky 27-02-2004, 13:12 Billy is in the poll? What muppets did they ask???

what???
slimsid2000 28-02-2004, 14:45 I have to say I like Peter Kay and find him very funny. Some of the epesodes of Pheonix Nights were some of the best sitcoms of recent years. I also like I'm Alan Partridge, but thought the first series was better than the second. I thought it deserved a better ranking in the recent best sitcom poll than it received (about numer 41 I think) especially considering some of the ones which came above it. Why were any Carla Lane shows even in this, do they count as comedy? I have yet to get one laugh out of her. Still we all have our own opinions and comedy is very much a matter of personal taste.
