You'll be pleased to hear there is a much cheaper alternative.

There are solicitors who have similar powers as public notaries, and can do the work for just £5.

I will find some contact details and post them here.

Oooh Mo, you're in a hostile mood this year ;)

Harish, contact these people:

AMS Law
35 - 47 North Church Street
Sheffield
0114-275 2888
http://www.amslaw.co.uk/

They have a solicitor who is also a Public Notary. You may be able to sign the paper in front of him as a solicitor (£5) or a Public Notary (£50).

Try this solicitor...

Irwin Mitchell Solicitors,
Riverside House,
1 Millsands,
Sheffield. S3 8NH
Tel: 0870 1500 100 Fax: 0114 272 6696

Used them instead of a notary a few months ago and she (can't remember her name) only charge a tenner per doc.

If they try and charge you £50 then haggle (I did)... tell them you only need them to counter sign a doc and I'm sure they'll do you a deal.

Seems like a lot of money for a signature. There's something very very unfair about that.

Just to help find a solution perhaps you could give us a few more details. I, for one, have never heard of a notary being required to witness an application for an exam. What sort of exam is it and which institution is demanding the signature? Not being nosy, just that there may be alternatives.

I was thinking the exact same, it would be good business if every student had to get a solicitor to sign their applications.

You dont even need a notary to apply for a passport.

Very few documents have to be notarised these days. If it's necessary, the notary is allowed to charge whatever he likes and considers appropriate.

Not all documents can be sworn before a solicitor, but if it's possible, there's a fixed charge of £5 plus £2 for each exhibit.

Check first whether it needs to be notarised.

Umm... This thread is six years old. I really doubt that a person with that low a post count is still around...

for anyone else reading.. quite often international students will need documents to be signed by a notary not just a solicitor.. so i'm afraid its the £50 charge for the signature.. nice work if you can get it!
