Ive heard this too, today, and it was salient to our family as we have just given our little granddaughter one.

When I had my kids I came to the conclusion that there are many things worth worrying about, but dummies are not one of them. If it comforts the baby, why not.

The study is quoted here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4509240.stm

It seems that every couple of years there is a new fad on how to prevent cot death,

I have 4 kids from 17 to 3 and have been told over the years to lay them on their front, side and back to help prevent cot death!!

I have been told that Boys are more prone than girls to suffer from this and as I have three girls and then a Boy I did worry when i had my son.

I have come to the belief that you can drive yourself mad over worrying about if you are doing the right thing but there comes a time when you have to stop worrying otherwise it will spoil your enjoyment of having a baby and realise that whatever you do and precautions you make you can't blame yourself for something that may happen through no fault of your own.

As long as you make the advised precautions ie smoking, overheating and they way you lay your child at bedtime, then there is not a lot else you can do.

I remember the antimony scare with cot mattresses highlighted in the ''Cook Report'' when I was pregnant with my first!

It's never mentioned now....

Strange how things tend to go around in cycles....

breast v's bottles

sleeping with your baby v's not sleeping with your baby

MMR v's no MMR jabs

Giving your child nuts v's not giving your child nuts

Dummy v's no dummy

Gripe water/Colic drops v's cooled boiled water

along with the wide range of sleeping positions recommended over the years...although now health officials do seem to have stuck with sleeping babies on their backs as best etc

Every mother wants to make the best choices for their babies I just wish there wasn't so much scare mongering.

Read the report on the Beeb website and from that research the dummy creates an airway - surely an oxygen mask would be better?

Not convinced by this research.

Did covering Babies in Talc after their bath have a link to cot death, i.e the particles getting into the lungs, or is that an urban myth ?
