LOL:heyhey: :heyhey: :hihi: :hihi: laura93 09-12-2005, 19:01 haha my dad is 46 Pauline BHG 10-12-2005, 10:43 I was at the gig, they were on top form ! They get really nervous playing in Sheffy, but on Thursday (for once !) it didnt show :D Ive also been to see them in Southport and Nottingham on this tour, and will see them in Manchester next week heheheh Shame a lot of the audience stayed on their asses throughout the show - doesnt create a great atmosphere. I was at the Casbah too - it WAS weird seeing *Only Human* play after the real thing, but it was good to see some songs that the real THL dont ever play (Goodbye Bad Times, Blind Youth etc etc). It was a good night. Hoboken (THL support) were there, as were Neil, Nic & Rob from The League. Hoboken are lovely - dont you think its like hearing Frank Sinatra sing over Ladytron or summat ???!!! Pauline BHG 10-12-2005, 16:37 http://www.myspace.com/hobokenmusic (you dont need to be a MySpace member to hear the samples) www.hoboken.co.uk :) ted_hughes 14-12-2005, 09:31 If anybody seriously thought the HL gig @ the city hall was amazing... ya need to get out more ! Crowd was static, for the first 30-45 minutes it was like being in a cathedral. Polite clapping and a little movement. Worst thing about any gig crowd, talking to mates throughout the gig about absolute rubbish, if ya want to talk, stay in the bar.. The songs that the crowd didn't know (and from where I was sat and watching, there were plenty).. it was Cornetto time !! anything pre/post Dare was received with mixed reactions. Cornettos @ a gig... (next it'll be cups o'tea and slices o'cake). In my opinion, wrong venue for them. City Hall crowd as said before, lethargic and uninspired. Stand up venues are so much better, at least the crowd has to move... but saying that, i don't think the majority of them could've coped with standing for more than 20mins.... Band wise, thought were okay, PO looked extremely awkward, very little stage presence and marching back and forth across the stage isn't my idea of having a good time! Very little interaction, always thought the frontman was THE one who got the crowd going... The girls have had the best job in the world for the past twenty odd years, look good but still don't hit the notes... voice wise. Overall, was like watching a very polished dvd... Better get the Hear & Now dates sorted....that's the future. Final thought... THL were far more successful (allegedly) in the UK than Depeche Mode... agree? DM in 2006 are playing 4 UK (that's four) dates on their world tour. All dates have been sold out in ages, Man Arena, Bham NEC and Wembley Arena..(10k capacity venues) so why can't "the greatest electronic" band ever sell out one night at Sheffield City Hall ? Extra final thought... talking to folks who've been to other venues, Sheffield so far was THE major let down on the tour. Maybe it's a Sheffield thing, not so much a HL one. hotdogbird 14-12-2005, 10:33 I think the major problem for The League playing the city hall is that the majority of the audience are friends of the band. As such it's probably deemed a little uncool to be too screamy shouty and dancy at your mate's gig. As far as Susan and Joanne's lack of vocal ability....isn't that part of the fun??? we know they can't sing but they're up there having a great time and still looking good after all these years. Would you rather have Phil dancing around in the style of Take That? I don't think so! He is a great frontman and one of the best vocalists around from the 80's. His complete loyalty to his band is commendable. He could have dumped the girls years ago and gone on to greater things in America with Giorgio Moroder but here he is after all these years. One of the finest in my opinion. Keep touring, F**k the hear and now tours. They've been there, done that! I thought the sound and lighting was tremendous actually. Much better than some other washed-up 80's bands I could mention. x ted_hughes 14-12-2005, 12:05 Originally posted by hotdogbird I think the major problem for The League playing the city hall is that the majority of the audience are friends of the band. Much better than some other washed-up 80's bands I could mention. x I think the problem wasn't about being cool, I think it was the fact that a lot of the crowd were 40+ and have forgotten what it's like to go to gigs. If folks came to see me perform and just sat there for most of the night i'd be gutted and I know they would too...the entertainer entertains.. not knocking PO's singing. I agree on that count, though complete loyalty to the band is commendable ?? Phil Oakey IS The Human League.. dya honestly think without him singing THL would carry on ... ? Phil Oakey as a brand is no where near a bigger selling point than The Human League. (Look at how many singers have left well known bands, decided to go it alone... and when on tour it's ................ of whoever. Ya know what I mean ? As for dancing around Take That style, I was suggesting more of a charismatic frontman.. many bands have frontmen who have a certain charisma that works... but PO doesn't come close to : eg - Dave Gahan (DM) / Jarvis (PULP) / Jagger (Stones) / Bolan (T-REX) / Ferry (Roxy)... etc... Agree with you 100% on sound and lights, always good to see a little effort gone into the visuals... hotdogbird 14-12-2005, 21:44 well at least no-one played bingo and split the entertainment into 3 half hour spots like they do when I sing! lol Pauline BHG 15-12-2005, 11:56 Ive been to a few of the shows, the seated gigs are always less atmospheric, and the band are VERY nrevous playing in Sheffield. The sounded and looked fantastic, but yeah the crowd were, hmm, *subdued*. I was in row 6, and standing, and no one in front of me was stood up ! They have toured every December for the last few years - on their own mostly, and they did a Here & Now. In the City Hall 2 years ago, the front section was standiung and it was a GREAt atmosphere. They mostly sell out gigs, or come close, and the standing gigs are electric !! Next time, go to Nottingham or Newcastle - great crowds ! |
