View Full Version : One off Forum Footy match!!!!
Preacher Man 08-12-2005, 19:21 Who would be interested in having a one off game of footy midweek with teams made up purely of forumers???
It would probably be best in the new year but I know the perfect pitch and it could be a good laugh. maybe get other forumers down to watch and all go on the pish afterwards?
Anyone interested???
EDIT:
Details are as follows.
the match will be held on the 13th of Jan at 8pm for an hour. This means getting there earlier to sort the teams and start dead on 8.
its at Abbeydale Sports CLub on Abbeydale rd South.
this (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&search_result=&db=pc&cidr_client=none&lang=&keepicon=true&pc=S173LJ&advanced=&client=public&addr2=&quicksearch=S17+3LJ&addr3=&addr1=) is a map on how to get there. all are welcome to come and play or watch from the stand. But if you intend on playing you have to let me know on this thread beforehand.
Robbie Loving 08-12-2005, 19:24 would be to many people legs id like to have lol..... but yeah im up for it

I'm away with work a lot in Jan-feb tho, and then off to Australia for three weeks, so keep me posted on dates.
Baggsie Spyro on our side (he's a foreigner too!)
I'm sure the Cardinal will be up for this too.

Preacher Man 09-12-2005, 09:00 are you interested then kirky?
i work with a ref, he lives in donny but i can ask if he knows anyone who will ref the match!
liencam, my emails screwed at the moment but will try again tonight (work blocks all emai sites).

I can't do:
10-11 Jan (London  )
24-25 Jan (Leicester :gag: )
31-01 Jan/Feb (Middlesborough :gag: )
07-09 Feb (London  )
10 Feb - 06 Mar (Australia  )
Cardinal 09-12-2005, 09:20 Yeah, I'm up for this and will obviously be on the 'foreigners' nee 'mercernaries' team.
Like Liencam, there may be some dates/time I can't make because of travelling with work but if I get enough notice, I should be able to work round that...
Come on Sheffielders - "let's be 'avin' you" (to paraphrase Delia!) ;)
i aint played for about six years and come to think of it i wasn't that good when i was at my peak:hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
i was more of a vinny jones type player:D
surfinjim 09-12-2005, 14:00 I'm interested, depends on my shifts at work.
Cardinal 09-12-2005, 14:01 Can people specify what side they'd be playing for - either 'Sheffield' or 'foreigners'. Then we'll have rough idea of numbers on/for each team. Cheers. :D

Foreigners for me :D
surfinjim 10-12-2005, 09:18 Steel City Wizards for me (provided we can play in a nice blue and white kit!!!!!!).
Only kidding by the way.
Sheffield for me though.
Guderian 10-12-2005, 23:40 Foreigners.
Want to mark Angelus.
spyro2000 10-12-2005, 23:43 Just in case
Baggsy being in goal
I can also play in midfield aswell. Im hoping it will be 5 a side or something, unfortunately im a bit of a short arse for 11 a side nets :(
Robbie Loving 11-12-2005, 07:27 apparently it only costs about £100 to book out the big pitz pitch for 11-a-side......
anyways.... we gonna get this on the roll?
Preacher Man 11-12-2005, 11:05 aye but we are still pretty short on numbers...
cant believe no one else fancies playing!!

Could do with a few more sheffielders, even though this is meant to be a Sheffield forum
Ill update the list as more posters post
i MAY be up for this... but i havent played in sooooooooo long that it would be embarrasing. and i doubt i could handle a FULL SIZE pitch.. id prob have a heart attack!
how bout 5 a side?
and being as though i was born in romford, london.. i guess id be a foreigner.
*vanessa* 11-12-2005, 12:41 Perhaps the Mods could get up a team too... the tackles would be interesting to see:P :P :P

there would be casulties!! im sure theres a few on here that often do football or something else...but last time i tried an 11 v 11 i nearly died and had to collapse at half time. ok i do sometimes run around like a headless chicken...but still..ive done a fair bit of fitness and sports before and im sure there will be a few older codgers that will die before me ;) lol
ive just found my boots in the attic.. so im well up for 5 a side at pitz.
I'll provide the commentary

Id play 11 a side, but Id personally prefer 5 a side. Im not fit nowadays. Also had a pretty nasty injury when i used to play youth team footy down at the Wolves (:gag: )
Plus, I dont expect everyone to turn up who has said they will, we all know it happens ;)

Lol, its all getting a bit official now isnt it.
The colour thing is a decent idea. Maybe we should concentrate on actually getting the event up and running first ;)

i was thinking midweek but what do people prefer??

saturday/sundays are best for me usually.. but its possible that i could do midweek. but it means people rushing about after work and such and trying to find the place. good colour choices...i have plenty of black stuff (im into rock...i guess it has to be done)
Sam @ Dearne 11-12-2005, 14:51 What a great idea.
I am up for it, I should be available most days as I work in Sheffield and control my own shifts etc....
I can play either 5-a-side or 11-a-side, I currently play in goal for a Sunday league side and played at the pitz in Div 1 for about 5 years.
I have access to a kit if we need one as I run our local Sunday team. Let me know if you need any help.

Im not too keen on a full 11 a side either. I suppose we can aim for 8 a side at the most, and if we o get too many people we can just split into teams of 3 or 4

Preacher Man 11-12-2005, 22:53 ok to clear up any confusion.
If you were born in Sheffield or its surrounding areas you are on the sheffield team!
If you were born anywere else then you are on the foriegners team irrespective of where you live now!!!
We still need some more players for the Sheffield team, come on guys i know sheffield isnt exactly known for producing exciting football talent but there must be some more of you who know how to kick a ball????
oh with myself and liencam attacking you guys dont stand a chance!!
spyro2000 11-12-2005, 23:03 The line ups seem pretty even at the moment Preach, if my update is correct that is, no doubt its not, but oh well.
Robbie Loving 12-12-2005, 07:15 i see the foreigners are getting a bit cocky with there boasting of there silky skills....... time to show them what we are made of sheffield boys
although i was not born in sheffiled shhhhhhh
fnkysknky 12-12-2005, 07:40 Put me down for Sheffielders - as long as I know in advance I'll make sure I'm not working :)
Cardinal 12-12-2005, 07:47 Pesky e-mail updates and lack of time to get on to the forum..... Anyway, I've been allocated to the wrong team also and will be playing for the 'Foreigners'.
And Sheffielders - I wouldn't worry about the attacking skills of either Preacherman or Liencam. I play regularly with them and the words 'cow' and 'banjo' come to mind!! ;)
Preacher Man 12-12-2005, 08:25 ah clever plan cardinal, lull them into a false sense of security...:suspect:
Cardinal 12-12-2005, 08:27 aye....the 'mind games' start here and now...... ;)
Can I just say, colours aren't an issue*.
We've got 12 flourescent bibs, that the Sheffielders can wear, so I reckon we should all wear our club colours, just to see the representation.
It'd be funny if we had more Blades than Owls though - especialy as the Owls always bang on about having more fans.

Internetowl 12-12-2005, 15:44 13th sounds good...
Preacher Man 12-12-2005, 16:01 i have a couple of options for places to play. there is a decent sized pitch behind the netto and B&Q on the edge of town or my preference would be the pitch at the sports club on Abbeydale rd South. It is a cracking venue and has a stand if some forumers wanted to come and cheer us on.
both will be pretty cheap but if anyone else has a suggestion im happy to look into it.
Internetowl 12-12-2005, 16:27 is that the squash club then? last time I played there it cost a bloody fortune for a pitch - then again we did hire the entire surface for 2 1/2 hours :)
Robbie Loving 12-12-2005, 16:40 how about the footy pitch near weston park hospital???
13th is ok for me.. but i have no car and am out near crystal peaks.. so most of these options for pitches to me are in the middle of nowhere....and places ive never even really heard of!!
whats wrong with pitz?

im just worrying about getting somewhere when its arranged... unless someone can drive by city centre and pick me up and drop me back off.. (i can get bus to town) or i'll be wandering round llike a lost sheep :hihi:
spyro2000 12-12-2005, 17:31 If anyone needs picking up (apart from MTheo) Im all up for it, im sure there will be some other drivers aswell

Preacher Man 12-12-2005, 19:16 from what i know the pitz are prety small.
will look into weston park place but robbie do you have a name or something???

i have a couple of options for places to play. there is a decent sized pitch behind the netto and B&Q on the edge of town or my preference would be the pitch at the sports club on Abbeydale rd South. It is a cracking venue and has a stand if some forumers wanted to come and cheer us on.
both will be pretty cheap but if anyone else has a suggestion im happy to look into it.
The SWD pitch sounds good to me (behind Netto & B&Q) as it's on my door step. Can't promise I'll be able to make it on a weekday though but I'll do my best.
Please please please let's not play 5 a side - it's crap and you usually end up more knackered than on a full pitch :)
Guderian 12-12-2005, 20:14 Weston Park pitches are good. in fact i have just played there.
If anyone is a student, you could prob get discount.

pitz are very small, in fact id prefer 4-a-side if was to play on there......
as for the pitches, not got a name for em, but il try find out
Guderian 12-12-2005, 21:37 Weston Park have 1 very small pitch - 4 a side tops. Not good. And about 8 other pitches. The other pitches are bigger- high quality astro - I play 6 a side there Monday nights - and you get a lot of space with those numbers on these.

Perhaps we can sort of do a little mini league of about 4 mini teams?
Preacher Man 12-12-2005, 22:38 forget the mini league its about 8 a side!!
the reason the pitches at abbeydale are so good is they have proper boundaries for throw ins and corners!!
spyro2000 12-12-2005, 22:40 Well im up for anything. so lets get this sorted :)
Preacher Man 12-12-2005, 23:48 ok will ring up tomorrow and book somewhere for the 13th!
will post when its booked, we can worry about numbers afterwards
Sounds good preacher man!!!! :D :D
I can just see us lot running around the pitch shouting out each others forum names- bet any people near will wonder what the hell is going on :hihi:
Preacher Man 13-12-2005, 11:24 ok here is the resluts of most of the mornigs spent on phone calls and searching on google, good job the oracle databse has not worked all last week and this week!!!
Abbeydale Sports Club (provissionally booked but we can cancel), 8 till 9 is all thats available.
half full size pitch, ideal for 8 aside.
costs £35.25 for the hour
Pitz too small
Aroura too far
Goodwin (Sheff uni) no answer left message.
Don Valley this is next to pitz and is a floodlit full size grass pitch. if we can get the numbers could be a good option!!
there getting back to me on availability and price.
Concord the open pitches, but are only 1/3 of a full size. cant see more than 6 a side on them, 7 at a push.
am going to provissionally book it for 1 1/2 hours from 7pm
costs £65
I couldnt find out the phone number for the one behind the B&Q!
what do you all think?? any suggestions to anywhere else i could try?
what about aurora sports club- thats a fully lit one- its in brinsworth not for from meadowhall!!!
Internetowl 13-12-2005, 12:41 Abbeydale sound good - a couple of quid apiece and they've got a bar ;)
Anyone without transport its on the 97 bus route on Abbedyale Road just after the train station...
Preacher Man 13-12-2005, 12:54 scott, i dont know if its too far our for people but i will ring it and find out the details!
These is some new pitches just off queens road too i believe- thay might be a bit small though!!!
Preacher Man 13-12-2005, 13:04 the ones behind queens rd are pretty good, i have to wait till 6 for the right bloke to come in so i can find out price etc...
there the SWD club
Someone is going to have to find the number for aurura, i cant find it on google or yell.co.uk
Guderian 13-12-2005, 13:45 Abbeydale sounds good. My pref is for Goodwin (Weston Park Hosp) but either is fine.
Robbie Loving 13-12-2005, 16:35 Up at concorde would not be too bad actually. i think it could possibly stretch to 8 a-side. it is quite spacious for what we used to play (6-a-side) would be perfect for 7, but 8 is a possibility
as for aurora
Firth Rixson Aurora Sports Club
Bawtry Road
Brinsworth
Rotherham
S60 5ND
Tel:01709 372613
Preacher Man 13-12-2005, 17:41 aurora is a bit far out for us non drivers!
i will wait and see what venue people say the most before confirming.
the top 3 seem to be;
concord (1/3 sized pitch)
abbeydale (1/2 sized pitch)
SWD behind queens rd (enclosed 7 or 8 a side pitch)
whats everyone think???
abbeydale sounds good.. cept i went there 3 years ago for works chrimbo do and left...ermm some presents in the flower beds :hihi: half full size sound just about managable as well :)
Abbeydale ticks all the bowes.
I've played there for the last four years, and it's perfect.

football shirt wise i only have 3.. and they all west ham.. so its white and claret, claret and blue, and light blue and claret.... not much diversity there! i'll just wear a black t-shirt or sumat.

Is it being played on grass or on the astro pitches at Abbeydale?
Do the Sheffield Folk side have enough players? I'd be up for it if we are still short on that side
Preacher Man 15-12-2005, 12:17 UPDATE
If more than 8 players for each side pick up we will use a rolling sub system.
This also helps for the less fit amongst us (myself included)
miwinter its at abbeydale astroturf. the details are a few posts above.
miwinter 15-12-2005, 12:33 OK... I guess I will keep an eye on what happens with numbers then. It might spoil it if there end up being too many, otherwise there'll be changes every 5 minutes and people wouldn't get much of a game really.

The more the merrier.
On the pitch we use, 7/8 a side is usually a decent number.
5 is deffinitely too few.

I am not bothered which team I play for but I play Sunday League and 6-a-side in goal for the past 7 years. I may even be able to bring a kit along.
I should be able to give a few people a lift from the city centre should they need it as I will be working just up till 7.30 in Sheff. First 3 to PM me will get a lift.
I will then be going back to Mexborough if anyone wants a lift back that way (Rotherham etc..).

Where / when ?
Can I be added to the audience ??
Spyro, with regard to your list, is there any positions anyone actually wants?
Sam @ Dearne 16-12-2005, 10:26 It would make sense that I play for the foreigners to balance things up a bit, after all I am a Rotherham lad, even though the Blades fans often call it ''a small town in Sheffield''.
Decision made, I am a foreigner!!!!
Bring it on Sheffield!!!
