View Full Version : 36 is a cuddly number. Synesthesia?

Ok, I've always gotten a mixed response on this one...but I've never minded being considered slightly barking, so here goes:D

36 is a cuddly number. 37 is like one of those sponge and brillo pad things - soft one side, sharp the other. 79 is as sharp as a knife.
4 is very friendly. 5 is a bit stand-offish.

I go through the entire numerical world like this, with any number of combinations giving the numbers either a vague personality or a sensory feeling. Maybe it's because I'm not good with numbers (is there such a thing as dysnumeria, lol) so my mind sorts everything into words, feelings and senses.

Does anyone else here do this?
After looking at me like my head had sprouted carrots when I explained it to my partner, he thought about it for a while, and then agreed. And the suggestions he made were very similar to mine, e.g. he agreed that 363 was clean and round and soft (:loopy: I know)

Do numbers have feelings?:P

Its a whole typographic thing. Some forms work well together, some do not. It's the same with letters - but you associate them with the meaning of the word they make up rather than the combination of letterforms that you see.

I'm pretty confident that I have a problem with numbers like that. I have to type in long reference numbers at work and always get numbers the wrong way round, and mis-type the codes etc. I find it difficult to deal with numbers. Words are fine, but not numbers.

What do you think to the number nine-hundred and ninety nine?

If you picture it, it should look nice and round - quite fat - but friendly.

But you see 999 and associate it with emergencies - police, fire, injury, panic etc and it takes on a different meaning. It clouds your judgement of the letterform. Like when you read a word. It's hard to disassociate it from it's meaning, or what it represents.

Numbers make me squirm. As soon as someone starts quoting them at me, especially if they want sums doing, I literally switch off or break into a cold sweat.

However, I can and do remember hundreds and hundreds of number combinations because of their personalities or properties (clean, soft, mean, etc.), or because they just naturally go with each other. Alternatively, numbers can just not make sense in a particular combination, in which case I cannot remember them, or only remember them because they're so 'wrong', lol.

I'm very interested in seeing if lots of people share the impressions I have of numbers having personality traits/ the properties of solid objects. If you do, post them, and lets see if we agree.

9 is a bit snide
10 is clean and pristine
13 tastes nice

999
isn't cuddly, or particularly friendly. I don't tend to associate it with the emergency services, cos I can never remember it:lol: (best not to have an emergency around me). No, I think of three men, thin and frowning, and I'm not keen on that number at all

interesting that you mention the number 36..for some reason unknown to me it is always the first number I think of when needing to use or quote a number...wierd!!

You cant remember 999? You have got a number problem :)

I've always thought 999 looked top-heavy and over-bearing... wierd! Never thought of it as a personality!! Does this work even for large numbers, or do you split them up into individual characters?

Maybe we could get you to do Bingo calling, Cosy!!! Watch out Mosh - your job might not be safe! ;)

I've just spoken to someone else at work who does exactly the same thing. In fact at church she won't read the chapters or psalms if she doesn't like the numbers of them. She really doesn't like the number 7, for instance, and thinks it's mean.
She is also number phobic. Could be a defense mechanism?

Yes, it works for long numbers. It's the sum of all their personalities/ properties that gives them an overall feeling, although I also split them up into their best partners.:D :loopy:

I can be swayed to like combinations I wouldn't normally like. For instance...170373 (my birthdate - no comments on my age, please - I bite) has lots of mean 7s, and 3s aren't always pleasant (except with 6s), but together that number has a very pleasing symmetry that makes it a bit of a Gandalf sort of a creature.

And yes, Agent Dan, those three thin, frowning men are overbearing, lol!

i quote 23 - have absolutely no idea why though

Cosy, is 23 a comforting number???

No, I don't like 23. It's cold and a bit harsh.

Oooh, can I get a job as a kind of feng-shui expert for people who deal with numbers?:D :D

Ah, not with you then. 170373 is a horrible collection of numbers. Disjointed and staccato and doesnt flow well. The parellel diagonals of the 7s break it up into uneven sections.

030282 is mine, and i much prefer that. It is a nice solid shape.
Although, when placed together, 2, 8 and 2 have a bit of an unpleasant, er... vibe. Slightly manacing.

i do this really weird thing with words
i equate each letter with a positive or negative vaule - this is determined by if they change their shape when turned into capital letters

i.e shape = 3 positive and 2 negative because the s and p (S P) stay the same while the h (H) a (A) and e (E) change

the more positive the result the happier i am with the word :loopy:

Bedhead: sorry! Just my opinion;)

Classic Rock: 666 has a sense of fun, and is a clean, soft number

Jackthedog: I can definitely see your point about 170373, it is pretty spiky and awkward, but I think maybe I'm partial to it cos of it's associations to me. If it wasn't my birthdate, I'd probably really dislike it. Also, I can be a bit spiky and awkward, so who am I to complain? It does have lucky connotations to me, tho. The 0 and the 3s soften the harsh 7s and give them a different aspect

BTW... there is such a thing as dysnumeria although I'm not sure of the exact terminology used...

Just been identified and only really being recognised... The ability to immediately numerically identify and apply certain basis mathematical concepts...

ok... carry on :P

My friend here says that 666 is some horrible men standing on their heads.
But I think maybe we can't discount the whole christianity thing with her...although the standing on their heads bit...lol...that's about actually looking at the shape of the numbers, too.

Martin s: got any more info? I want to make everyone who ever forced me to do maths to feel really guilty at not seeing my acknowledged disability:D

This is a quality topic!! I agree with you on the 23 - cold - but if asked for a random number I come up with 423 which would soften the harshness by your account, Cosy! Otherwise I like 312 (which is a running joke with my uni friends), 4, 11 and 25. I think those men in white coats are coming up the stairs now!!!!

Bedhead's positive/negative thing with letters is odd (like I can speak!). Bedhead, how are you with words? Do you like them, or are they a problem for you? Just trying to see if my defense-mechanism theory works the other way around, for people who like numbers more than words (I'm equating your positive/negative with maths. Is that right, or are thay value judgements, e.g. positive=good, etc?)

Cosy:P

Bedhead
26-02-2004, 11:51
am ok with words - well i have an MA if that means anything - words are my friends and not a defence mechanism!

i don't use the shape of words/letters qualitatively like the way you use the shape or form of numbers to form an opinion

I do however use the numbers in a mathematical way to inform my positve/negative 'qualitative' judgement of the word

there's no ryhme nor reason to why i do this!

what am i going on about, words fail me- ha!

I work with numbers too much, to the point where 36 sounds like Im saying "dirty sex" and 46 sounds like "naughty sex" (maybe that says too much about my state of mind  ) favourite number is 1, clean and simple and minimalist altho it does sound like youre saying "wod" when you have a cold, I find number 11 to be decadent to the point of heresy, and because everyone wolf whistles when I say it  I like 5 as well because I remember being taught how to draw it at school

Oh, I must write 5 backwards...hat on, down the street, and round the pond:)

It's not the shape or form of the numbers with me, that's what makes it a bit odd. For instance, 36 is a round, soft clean number, like a sponge. But 3s aren't so much round as very slightly craven. A little mean. But with a nice number, like 6, they behave themselves quite nicely. 1s are rounded, pleasant numbers...oh dear, now I'm proving just how bad it really is,

cosy - give your rundown from 1 to 9 with a description for each!

or you've already mentioned 1, 3 and 6 - wonder what you make of me fav number 7 or it's my lucky number anyhow - if i was to describe it though i'd say it was quite elegant, erm could be construed as a bit mean maybe kinda slim and somehow a bit stuck up looking over the other numbers :loopy:

There's a number which pops up in strange places.

Nomme

p.s. What number am I thinking of?

cosywolf

1. Friendly and easygoing.
2. smooth. bouncy
3. a little stand-offish except when paired with others, e.g. 6. Spongy
4. A very nice number, shiny
5. A bit pointy, but I quite like it. Sensible
6. very nice. clean. smooth. happy
7. harsh and not very nice. Would be a brillo pad
8. friendly. velvety
9. very good with 3, shiny again

But all these are liable to change, depending on their relationships with other numbers.

cosy - your reply was as good as i thought it was gonna be

although am a lil dissapointed that 23 and 7 are not held in much esteem by you - what's the best pairing for 7??

umm i imagine two 7's would appear as quite imposing!?

Amazing! Anyone who can describe the number 8 as 'velvety' will always be ok in my book :D !! (and I agree, 4 is kinda shiny, but I've always thought of it as 'complete', sort of difficult to describe)

Have you ever looked at the I-Ching? I'd like to hear your opinions on some of the hexagrams and their correlating numbers...!

Bedhead
26-02-2004, 16:19
i think 6 and 9 go well together :D

I have always sincerely believed that if a number has something to say, then it should blurt it out. The serene roundness of an 88 only became that way because a frustrated, ill-tempered 394 fought for what it believed in, and now is a contented 88.

Just look at the 7935 case. It was sick with worry and almost, and this is the truth, ready to end it all by timesing itself by 0, when it decided to have one last attempt at freeing itself of its pityful shame.

Eventually, it bit the bullet and divided itself by 3 and became 2645, a much more agreable character. It eventually married 4, a very attractive single little number and together they became 42645 and they were very fond of 69.

Bedhead
27-02-2004, 07:41
yup we're all nuts it seems but have to say this is quite compelling -
like those empirical ramblings there Sam

i think one of the most comfortable pairings would have to be 88 -rounded, grounded, welcoming, comforting and very well balanced indeed - this is also quite true of 84 but the sharpness of 4 provides an edge - i disagree that 4 however is a 'complete' number, to me its too sharp it's edges/points too unyeilding kinda in yer face type of thing - quite sleek mind but not a favourite of mine that's why it needs 8

Sam Miguel
27-02-2004, 08:59
Yes, quite. 8 and 4 pair up extremely well to make a nice friendly little combination that's just soooo not-in-you-face.

The dominant digit, 8 taked the angular angryness off the 4 and allows it to snuggle up to it hence creating a warm - but not overpowering - succulent feeling.

Lovely.

Bedhead
27-02-2004, 09:41
i think 8 and 6 share more of a brother sister type of relationship
does anything go with 7 ? 9 maybe? actually 7 and 9 do go quite well together - i think neither fit in too well to other numbers but maybe they work - or perhaps they're a bit top heavy

7 is the perfect accompinament for 6 -

76 see how they don't face each other but kinda lean on each other - hmm i like that pairing

Sam Miguel
27-02-2004, 16:32
76 is reminiscent of the aroma and texture of mature cheddar cheese with overtones of ripe Manchego. Personally, I don't think it's going anywhere. Not even trying to get there really. Just nice as it is, and knowing it - completely ambitionless, in the nicest possible way of course, a real pussycat of a combination.

But look what happens when we turn it around!

67 is much more intimate - almost bordering on the semi-erotic, but fully clothed and intent on keeping that way.

Marvellous.
