God I could kill a Chicken Madras.

I get this definite surge about once a week. My goodness, I'm really craving a curry just now.

Are the spices addictive or what?

Apparently the burning sensation from the spices is addictive…cant remember the name of the prog I saw it on…was a few years ago.

Your body builds tolerance to the pain so you need hotter curries to satisfy this desire

I'll second that.

When curry is ingested, like is said, the body develops both a tolerance and a (very weak) dependency due to the stimulation of the senses. As it's a non-chemical dependency, some people are more receptable than others.

More info can be found at the BBC website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/989256.stm) and Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curry).

Maybe we have some neuroscientists on here that can clarify?

Well how come after 15 years of dedicated curry eating I still crave Chicken Kormas?

Surely I should be onto a madras by now?

Spicy foods generate endorphins, I think... those natural feel-good chemicals that eventually turn pain into pleasure. They are also what gives you the "runner's high."

Since I gave up smoking I have a constant craving for chicken madras. Is that relevant in anyway?

most curries contain nutmeg dont ask me why :suspect:

and i belive that well this is what my catering tutor told me
nutmeg contains a small amount off hallucinogenic (btw i had to google that so i could spell it right:confused: )

anyway this could be why the curries are addictive to some people

just a guess though guys:confused:

I'd go with HappyHoosier on this one - the spices cause endorphins to be generated, chemicals in the body which are often described as 'natural opiates'.

I would have thought that the hotter curries would generate the most, but I'm not sure being a mild mannered Korma sort of fellow.
